History: (a couple of paragraphs at least - more for elves/dragon riders etc)
Bristven was born in Fasaloft, near the forest of the Spine. It was a cool Hallows Eve night when Selena fled to the Spine in hopes of keeping her daughter away from the crazed father that she was destined to meet if she stayed in Uru'baen. So instead of being born in the city of the King, Selena made sure that her daughter was born in the Spine, the one place where the Empire would never go. She left Bristven, then called Fern, in the care of an old watch guard who had lost his own daughter. Before Selena left, she told the man to never speak of who Bristven was related to. After the man agreed, she left to return to her post in Uru'baen.
Years passed but none were as important as the day of her eighth birthday, the day that she found out who she really was. It was a cold night and the old watch man lay on his bed dying. He called Bristven into his chambers and started speaking to her. It was that night that Bristven was told who her parents were. She couldn't come to terms with her heritage, so Bristven called her caring adopted father a liar and then stormed out of the house. When she returned the following morning, the watch man was laying in his bed but he was dead. There was a carefully written note explaining to her that she was the best daughter he had had the chance to raise. It was towards the end that he had written the names of her parents and that he had received word that she had a brother in Uru'baen and another in Carvahall. He had written that there were rumors that she had a brother down the line who lived in Uru'baen as a servant to the King.
Bristven read the note that morning and then she had taken off toward the edge of the Spine to investigate all of the information she had received. Her trip was taken to Carvahall, where she looked to see if she had a brother there. Bristven found a little boy named Eragon that had supposedly lived in the town and was thought to be the son of Morzan, but nobody would say where he lived. When Bristven went looking, an Empire soldier grabbed her and grinned. They were immediately off to Uru'baen where the King would interrogate her as to the death of both of her parents.
Bristven was taken to the city and spent five years in the dungeons of the Empire. She was tortured every day that she was there but she never relinquished any information. Since there was no reason to suspect it, the Empire never gave her the drug to suppress her magic. When Bristven turned 13, she was tired of being treated like she was scum, so she summoned a group of deranged spirits and channeled them until she became the shade that she was. It was three days later that the King discovered that his entire battalion of soldiers had been killed because Bristven had slaughtered her captors.
Bristven spent many years as a shade, learning to command people and yet she became evil from the spirits and soon took the command of several groups of Urgals and four Razac. She was utterly devastated when her troops were killed and the Razac left because they were tired of listening to her. When Bristven turned 28, she decided that she was going to bring about the doom of the King and his servants.
