Full Name: Adurna dautr abr Svina (Svinasdaughter)
Other name: Undir Thringa (Under Rain). Lady Mindstorm.
Race: Spartan
Side: Varden
Birthplace: Hadarac Desert
Age: 32
Gender: Female
Birthday: April 3rd
Eyes: Slanted, silver with a dark grey ringing them. They are outlined by magically tattooed silver as a result of a spell gone wrong (not that she dislikes the outcome. She was trying to fix her eyes, and make them gold, as is most common of her people, but this suited her and taught her not to play with magic beyond her reach).
Hair: Long, black, bangs often pulled straight back. It curls into slight waves when it air dries.
Weight: 138
Height: 7'4
Magic User: Yes.
Preferred Weapon(s): Magic, pike, longswords. She prefers to subdue her enemies from a distance.
Appearance: Lithe, but not so much as most elves. Demure, with a straight nose and elegant ears. Her hands are strong, well suited to wielding weapons, weaving and preparing food. Long legs, and strong ankles designed for running. Curved, almost decorative horns looping a circlet around her head (her hair is normally pulled back into a tie between the tips at the back of her skull). She bears tribal tattoos around her wrists and ankles in the ancient language, describing her love for her family and her fire in battle.
Personality: Adurna speaks her mind without reserve, and quiet though the comments may be, they often carry her fair share of bite. She has a strong will, full of determination, prone to long boughts of obsession over a given subject or cause, which makes her a force to be feared when scorned by a lover (of which she has few.) Despite her confidence in her war games, Adurna is highly self-concious of her appearance - who outside their race would find her pretty, after all? When she falls in love, despite the power of her passion, she keeps to herself, and hides it away, willing it to wither and die and plague her no more.
Likes: Listening to her mother sing, watching her weave. Mixing teas. She adores Dragons and the Riders, and dreams of flying. Sparring with her brother and friends. Running. Her height - it allows her to tower over humans, and dwarves and contend with members of her own race as an equal, for a woman should not have to rely on a man to fight her battles for her! The ancient language. Tree climbing and lizards.
Dislikes: Being landlocked by her lack of wings. Demonstrating in front of the class of peers she learns with words (which requires speaking up and risking making a mistake in her magic). Galbatorix's reign. Du Vrangr Gata - Adurna thinks that they are foolish, over confident, and uneducated in their use of the ancient language (the term she uses is 'flippant').
Strengths: Her singing voice, which flows like water. Magician duels - while she is not an overly powerful spellcaster, she enjoys the challenge. Her focus is the key to her dominance in duels. Adurna can keep enemies at bay for extended periods of time and works best in long range situations of combat.
Weakness: Adurna doesn't hold her tongue well. She says what is on her mind, even in the ancient language, where expressing one's self properly is everything. This sometimes causes her spells to be a little bit.... off. She is self-concious of her voice, and thus never speaks or sings louder than a whisper unless alone.
Family: Her father, an elf named Ekar, is deceased. An older brother, Fedrin, who is seven years her senior, and her mother Svina and uncle, Uromith. They are a small, well respected family.
History
Adurna was born in an isolated village in the dessert. Her father was a warm-hearted elf who greatly loved the nearby oasis. When he was kidnapped (and presumably slain) by Galbatorix's raiding parties, his wife was torn by grief, and throughout the remainder of her pregancy could only find solace by those waters. The thought of bearing the ultimate declaration of love without him seemed unthinkable until the child was born. When Svina beheld her, she knew that she loved her every bit as much as her husband and named her for the only thing she could think of to honour him, water.
Adurna grew up emersing herself in her studies of the ancient language, and trained hard to find the flow of magic within herself and become a spellcaster her father would be proud of in service of the Varden. She was headstrong in her opinions as a youth, a habit that she soon had to curb if she wished to avoid a good tongue lashing from her mother when her outbursts went too far. While Svina is somewhat a subdued version of the fierce warrior she had once been, she is still a stormy force to contend with. Her children sport a healthy fear of her wrath. Avoiding lashings of any kind from her were key to the siblings.
Fedrin and Adurna are quite close. They bonded through combat and a shared hatred for Galbatorix. He instructed her in most of the magic she knows.
When Adurna was twelve, and Fedrin nineteen, committed themselves to training with the Varden. The idea was Adurna's, who was determined that her young race should win themselves a place in history. Her abiding love of the Riders pushed her, giving her the blinding belief that if they were recognized, somehow, someday, she could fly. No dragon eggs would choose her race, a well known fact that like the dwarves, smarted like an open wound. In the minds of most, there was little to be done about it, but Adurna's will in this could not be undone. Her brother grumbled that she was stubborn and foolhardy and that if she insisted on trumping after death and dreams and glory in such circumstances, he'd be honour-bound to trump after her in her folly. Their mother disapproved of her children going to battle when their father had gone missing so easily. By the time she discovered their plot, however, they were already returning from the Beor Mountains, having sworn fealty to all the Varden stood for, its leader Ajihad and his cause (for this was before Saphira Bjartskular's hatching) . They served by training their troops at home into a fearsome battallion and weeding out servants to the Empire with their magicians.
When Nasuada marched from the mountains and into Surda, Adurna and the other warriors of her clan marched to meet them headlong into the band of Urgals. Fedrin demanded that they let him pass unchallenged to the Varden. When the Urgals in their bloodlust refused, he declared that the only man of their ranks they would face would be himself. Eager to prove themselves against the new hornless creatures, the Urgals accepted the condition of battle. Fedrin triumphed, ignoring the injuries he suffered when he learned that the Urgals also wished to join the Varden. He, like the other races, held a great prejudice against the creatures, whether or not it was outweighed by his dispising of Galbatorix. Regardless of how he felt for them, he hand won in battle, and the Urgals challenged him no further, even offering to travel with them to the Varden camp, which had mobilized. It was Adurna and the spartan spellcasters who convinced the captain to accept the offer and travel with them.
In the years since (I have no idea how long it's been in relation to the timelines of the books. Correct me if anything doesn't fit, please!), Adurna's hate for the Urgals has diminished into a grudging respect - and in the odd case, friendship. Their love of battle far exceeded her own, for while she enjoyed crossing blades with someone, the gore and horror of war quickly mae her understand why her young species longed for the land to quickly be at peace. She works as a warrior when needed, but much of her time is spent training her mind, and instructing the few Varden humans magicians she trusted with the elves. The elves themselves treat her with respect, but not as one of them, in any regard. This knowledge weighs on her heart whenever they are present.
Other:
Her forthright manner in the ancient language when she was younger was a problem, for she did not understand all of the words she used to their fullest extent. Thus, she'd misuse them on occasion in spells. Fortunately, no one has been 'harmed' by any of these mishaps as of yet, although her elder brother once went about sporting a thin, spindly tail for a few days until the thing began to irritate him and he severed the magic. It grew back for almost a month before the spell exhausted itself.
Adurna is devoted to the Varden, and to Nasuada herself.
Her distatste for fortune tellers comes from an encounter with Trianna and her pet underlings. Trianna claimed to read her fortune, and proclaimed several predictions over Adurna. Skeptical, she challenged the validity of Trianna's words. A perpetual air of falsity seemed to hang about them, she said. Enraged, the witch tried to gain entrance into her mind, to dispatch her revenge on Adurna for her insolence and to fetch words in the ancient language for the Twins. Adurna's mind flared up into a fury and lashed out at any mind nearby. Her attack wounded Trianna's pride - and slew a human child studying under her. This is how Adurna came to know (and intensely dislike) the Du Vragr Gata, especially the Twins, and soothsayers or any who presumed to tell the future. When the Urgals who came to train with the spartans learned of this, they dubbed her Mindstorm.
