Not-So-Brief History: Dae was born in small village outside of Dras-Leona, a place of strange customs and beliefs. One of them being that each family must pledge their prettiest daughter to be a priestess to the gods, to learn the art of magic and prophecy through talking with the dead. Dae was pledged by her family. She was the only child of Eldric and Alanna but they were not excused from the custom and Dae was indeed very beautiful. And so at the age of 12 Dae was whisked away to the temple to train under the priests.
Dae’s childhood had not been the best before her training began. Her father was a horrid drunk and her mother was too worried about getting abused by the man than she did worrying about her only daughter. Her mother as afraid that she would never produce a male heir. And by the time Dae left, they still hadn’t. But Dae herself was never abused, she often was just left to her own devices and from and early age learned how to take care of herself. But Dae was a special child from an early age spirits seemed to flock to her. Like a beacon of light in the dark. They would whisper to her. Tell her the future and even offer her their power. But it wasn’t until she began her training, that she realized how powerful of gift she had.
Dae entered the the Temple to begin her training under Eliana, a very experienced Priestess. Dae learned all about the art of summoning spirits and using them to do magic as well as using them to predict the future. But life at the temple wasn’t just training. It was filled with prayer, dancing, and singing. The other girls would often sneak out of temple and go to the local tavern’s and flirt with men, since no man was allowed inside the temple. Dae didn’t mind though, she rather enjoyed friends she made and all the women got a long swimmingly. There was very little incident during her training as a Priestess, except that even more spirits had been drawn to her. At age 18, the young woman was officially made a priestess of the temple. She took to her duties happily, not minding the religious life she had chosen to live.
When it came the day for the priests and priestesses to remove their body parts. Dae did not take part. While the other women wee removing toes and fingers, Dae just spilt her blood on the alter. She heard whispering in her ear to not do anymore than that. The young priestess had begun to hear whispering ever since she finished her training. Little did she know that spirits had begun to flock to her, whispering in her ear. And these spirits were malevolent ones.
But one day she met a man her age named Adam. he had come into the temple to make an offering to the goddess. Dae fell in love at first sight and so did Adam. But there was a problem, a Priestess was to never take the company of men. But Dae and Adam did not care. They would meet in secret, and fell in love with each other. He had loved Dae’s long blonde hair then, and often said that she herself was a goddess. But Dae heard the same voices whispering her ear. The spirits were warning her about the misfortune that would be fall the two lovers. She ignored them though, not wanting to let the happiness of their relationship to end.
Their affair lasted a year until one day, Dae was weighting for him in their secret meeting place. He never showed up. She was distraught thinking that perhaps he didn’t want to see her anymore. The spirits began to whisper to her once more saying horrible things to her. She ignored them, not wanting to believe them. Dae ran into the city. She saw a crowd and decided to investigate, only to find her father standing off to the side and the dead, decapitated body of her lover laying there on the dusty floor. Dae was filled with a taste of revenge and horror. She didn’t have to do anything though, the spirits that hung about her took out her father, killing him on site. The young priestess’ old teacher appeared out of no where and told her to run. “Leave this city and never come back, it’ll be your head next.”
Dae ran from the city and took refuge in the Spine. There she shaved off all the hair that her lover had fallen in love with. It was just her and the spirits now. She was alone and heart broken. The world meant nothing to her now. She spent the next year living in the Spine, her only company being the spirits that had flocked to her. One day she had ventured back into the Empire only to be picked up by the soldiers of the King and brought before him. At that point she offered her services in exchange for him helping her control the spirits that followed her. But Dae decided in the end to allow the spirits to remain. They had become apart of her life, and they were the closest thing she had to family. In fact they had developed a very strange bond. Often if you linger around Dae you will hear voice other than her own say, “I’ll tell you a secret, which one’s your good ear? People are made up of water and fear.”
Anything extra: Dae does have spirits that seem to linger around her, allowing her to have access to magic without the extent of having to summon them. But they are finicky and may not do her will. They also love to tell her secrets about people and things that are going to happen. They feed off her energy and they have quite the twisted bond, but she is not a shade.
