Laetri looked down as Avinder's dagger was kicked towards him. Thunderr flashed in his eyes. He didn't blame Isrydia but he felt bad for Avinder. He had lost everything. He then grabbed the dagger and said, "Enough. I will heal you both then Isrydia and I shall have a spar and after a magic lesson." his voice gentle. He healed Avinder' thigh and Isrydia's arm before blunting Thringa.
Thringa in hand he faced Isrydia. He took a moment to survey his surroundings. He was rewarded with the sight of a bird. He closed his eyes and had the bir land on his shoulder, using it's eyes instead of his. He gestured for Isrydia to start.

Isrydia was slightly disappointed when Laetri broke up their spar as she had been getting into the fight. None the less, she wasn't about to argue with the stranger. She had no idea what he was like or how he would react. She glad for his healing her shoulder. Relief spread down her arm. It felt like she had pins and needles, but was somehow more pleasant, like a cool drink on a hot summer's day. So she would be facing Laetri in a sparring match now. A Rider would be a much tougher opponent, unless he hadn't had much training. She didn't know enough about dragons to guess at Agaravel's age and so the amount of time Laetri had been a Rider, but she looked fairly big to her so Laetri must have had a good amount of training in combat. Much more than she had, anyway. He had probably been experienced in combat before being a Rider, too, since from what she knew, dragons usually only hatched for good fighters.
Laetri was fighting with his eyes closed too. Isrydia sensed a theme here. In a battle, fighting with closed eyes would be a disadvantage however well you made up for it, since there were slight things you wouldn't be able to notice any other way, and colours wouldn't be a possibility. She couldn't think how to turn that to her advantage right now, but it seemed to her that both Avinder and Laetri were either just avoiding her tactic of watching the eyes of her opponent or were trying to force her to judge based on other signs. The bird flying to Laetri's shoulder was a surprise. Must be a mind thing he could do to persuade it to sit there. Bird had better eyesight than humans, possibly even any other living thing including elves and dragons, as their vision had such good resolution they could see a tiny mouse in the grass from a mile in the air. Something like that. Still, were Isrydia a better opponent, using a bird might not be such a good tactic. She would have told the bird to disobey Laetri if she had the skill and know-how. Briefly, she considered trying to scare it off, but she realized he was probably preventing it from feeling fear right now so that it wouldn't just fly off.
Looking the bird in the eye, she figured that since Laetri was looking through the bird's eyes, the bird's eyes would do pretty much what Laetri's eyes would do if he were using them. It was a lot harder to try and read a bird's eyes, though. Humans were better as she was used to reading their expressions just in everyday communication. Birds, however, were something new. It was hard to see movement in those beady black eyes. Although birds did tend to tilt their heads to one side in order to see something better, since their eyes were on the sides of their heads. She would be able to see the movement of the bird's head easy enough, so she watched out for that. The bird's head would surely move, else Laetri would not be able to focus on anything in the fight very well. It seemed she was to start this fight, too. Right, then. She moved diagonally to his right-hand side in a sort of half side-stepping motion. Since his right was to her left, it made for a slightly more difficult motion of her sword, so she hoped it would be a less expected direction of attack. Her sword swung to her left as she neared him, then flicked back outwards towards Laetri's wrist in a quick, sharp attack she hoped might make him drop Thringa.

Laetri couldn't help but a smile as he picked up some info from Isrydia's mind. First of them being that she had quickly adapted to the fact of him using a bird as his eyes instead. Second was the fact she had thought of scaring away the bird which probably wouldn't have worked even if she had known how to use her mind correctly as Agaravel at the moment was inside the bird.
Having left his shield in Ellesmera when he had fled, scared of what might happen when they found out Agaravel had hatched for him he was forced to use Thringa alone. As she lunged to him, her sword coming to his left he smiled. She had played into his hands-- literally as he put Thringa into his left hand and easily blocked Isrydia's blade, slamming Thringa onto it, aiming to put enough force to implant it in the ground. To help, he also slammed his foot into the aimed place he sent her blade. Then, with his foot secure on her blade he slashed with Thringa to her thigh, giving her two choices; either let go of her sword to dodge, or keep hold of her sword and struggle with an Elf and get hit.

Laetri was, as expected, a very tough opponent and far better than Isrydia. When he shifted his sword to his left hand, the young apprentice could have kicked herself. She had seen that very move used not too long ago when Caspia had given her some pointers. She had promised to herself she would be more careful to look out for that in future! What happened next occurred so fast she could barely follow it. Nettle ended up under Laetri's foot with a slash aimed at her thigh. Here was something else she had seen before; William had ended up with a foot on her sword the very first time she had met him. While she was reluctant to do so, she let go of her sword and darted back out of harm's way. Until now, she had always hung onto her weapon regardless of what happened, but that always ended up in her being hit. It was very likely the Rider had a plan for either of the courses of action she could have taken, so she was on her guard as she watched him carefully.
She needed to retrieve Nettle somehow, but with only a shield that would be difficult. The fact that she was less practiced at using a shield didn't help. As for using her shield alone... she had never tried that before. She felt very open and vulnerable all of a sudden. This was something she had to work on. Sparring matches had a funny way of displaying her flaws to her for working on later, and testing what she had been practicing. Every time she sparred, she always seemed to find at least one new situation to work out how to deal with, or a move, defence or tactic she needed to work on. This was no exception. Some day, maybe she would get through a sparring match and only be practicing what she knew already rather than learning something too drastically new. That would probably mark a significant improvement in her fighting for her.
She needed to lure Laetri away from her sword before she could dart in and grab it. In an attempt to do this, she sidestepped as if aiming a bash with the edge of her shield against his right arm. Whether he changed his sword arm or turned to avoid an awkward swing with his left arm, Isrydia moved behind the elf to try and force him to turn around. Whatever happened, she stepped back, hoping to drag him towards her and away from where she had let go of Nettle.

Laetri smiled at Quetzal as he was able to disarm her. She learned how to make sure that, though reluctantly, you have to give up your weapon at some times to keep yourself from danger. As she stumbled away from him, awkwardly looking as she contained no sword, just her armor and the shield, Laetri began to think of tactics she would try. He guessed around twenty thousand, which he narrowed down to a few hundred which she could do. Then even lower to 10 which she could do at her current level.
Thanks to his thinking, Laetri was able to figure Isrydia's tactic before time, and though he could have easily flawed her idea, he didn't fight to a high level. If he did, Isrydia wouldn't even be able to touch him. But other than that, she needed a motive. So he quickly released Nettle, purposely giving his movement a flaw that her shield almost hit him and as he twirled away, his face was smiling. He then released his hold on the bird and opened his sparkling blue eyes. As Isrydia took Nettle, he purposely waited for her to pick her sword and attack him again.

Isrydia was aware Laetri wasn't fighting at his full capacity, since then as an elf and a Rider he would be a dancing whirl of movement, any of her attacks missing completely and him being able to be in a position where in a real fight he would have killed her within seconds. He was still fighting better than her, enabling her to be tested a little and stretch her abilities. After all, fighting an opponent she had no hope of defeating would only slow her progress as she would be unable to do anything, while gradually easing herself up in skill would let her stretch herself and progress at her own natural rate. She was well aware the Laetri was just letting her have her sword back, but still gratefully lifted Nettle up again into an attack stance. It was a relief to have the weapon comfortably back in her hand again. The bird had gone too. He was using his own eyes now, which was in some ways an advantage and in others a disadvantage. The bird's eyes were on his shoulder, so would have harmed his aim a little as he suddenly had to compensate for his eyes being shifted to one side slightly. Now his sight was similar to hers, only of course better and more precise.
It was these vivid blue eyes she watched as she resumed attacking. She wanted to start off with something easier this time until the rhythm of the spar could be resumed. Anything too difficult could pay off, but might fail and make her pay the price where she could have just done something simpler but just as effective. She darted forward, bringing her shield in low to the Laetri's right, aiming to create a block on his right side to restrict his movement. When she was close enough, she flicked Nettle in a wide arc, aiming to strike at the back of his knees. Her arm reaching around would restrict his movement to his left, and moving back would bring him into contact with Isrydia's sword.

A Isyrdia had expected Laetri had to deal with the sudden swap of eyes. The bird ha had much more accurate sight. Now he was back to an eyesight though much better than a human's worse than a bird's. He rapidly blinked. He watched in satisfaction as Isrydia picked up Nettle, her eyes now sharper and sure. That was good. It was exactly what he wanted for er to have. She would also need an open mind.
As her shield was coming to his right, he observed his other escape route:to the left. But then Isryia was close an had swung Nettle in an arc to his knees. The only out was jumping. But at the sametime he did not want to demoralize her. She needed morale and support to increase her skill other than everything else. He finally decided to show her the sheer power she would face when against an Urgal and so stopped the shield with his right arm while Thringa, in his left, was used to parry Nettle. Locked like this, so close he finally wa able to look her in the eye. He stared her down with his blue eyes. "Do you wish to swap to magical training or continue?" he asked, obviously not strained.

Isrydia wasn't the least bit disheartened when her attack failed. She doubted she would ever be in a position where she could hope to best a elf or a Rider, so never expected to be able to beat them. Laetri was much stronger and faster than her, as well as having had far more training and experience. She was still only an apprentice and had plenty of time yet to learn, having her whole life ahead of her. She sheer force used against her made her stagger a little, but she recovered and faced Laetri. She didn't care about hiding her weaknesses from those she trusted, so found it easy to accept them herself, being determined to learn and to improve rather than setting her sights on winning every spar. By this point, she was feeling tired, her muscles were starting to ache a little and she was sporting a couple of new bruises, but that wouldn't stop her carrying on. She wasn't quite tired enough to call it a day yet.
At the mention of starting their magic lesson, her eyes brightened. She had always been curious about magic and anything to do with it, so the chance to learn it herself would be fulfilling an ambition she had had from a young age. She was feeling a little tired now, and was aware magic drained energy, so didn't want to tire herself out more from fighting more. Besides, she was impatient to learn! "I would love to try learning magic!" she beamed, practically buzzing with excitement.
((Bit rushed, sorry))

((It's okay. My posts haven't been that good either. And other than that, sorry for taking so long to post. I've been having a busy month :L))
Laetri knew that Isrydia was fine with the fact of defeat..though it wasn't a defeat or a victory as they both stopped to teach her magic. Other than that, Laetri was nervous. Although he tried to appear a confident, natural leader in front of Isrydia, he was always nervous. He was still very young for other Elves and had been only a Rider for eight months! His teachers, Anurin and Vanilor, and even Avinder had taught him he had to overcome this nervous fear he had. They told him people would follow him no matter where he went.He looked at Isrydia, trying to keep his expression calm and in control even though inside he was bustling with nervous fear. What if he made a mistake as a leader and that cost Isrydia her life?
"Do not fear Laetri. Remember what our teachers told us as they knew that your mother had been expecting you. We must meet her wishes. Be a true leader. Help Isrydia learn magic to give us an extra weight against the Empire. We must avenge your mother, and her dragon, my namesake." said Agaravel, her gentle voice convincing. He nodded and un-dulled Thringa and Nettle. He then passed a small flow of energy into Isrydia to help her with her training. Ok, he thought to himself. "What is magic?" he asked Isrydia, "It is the process of manipulating energy." he said, answering her as she most probably would not have known. "Today, we'll start withhow to use magic and a few basic spells. But first, you need to learn to defend your mind. I shall start by grabbing your mind with my own and taking it out of your barriers. From then I want you to try roaming around with your mind and observing things. Me and Agaravel will keep our minds open to support." he said, keeping his voice like a teacher and still gentle though it wavered to turning nervous again. He then reached into Isrydia's mind and grabbed her mind, pulling it out of her barriers. From then it was up to her.

Isrydia listened to Laetri, glad she would learn to protect her mind. When Avinder had contacted her, she had had no way of defending herself. While Avinder had turned out to be a friend, what if it were someone not so friendly? Or perhaps an opponent in battle might try to read her thoughts? This would be an incredibly useful skill to have. She didn't fancy letting people have access to her thoughts against her will. Galbatorix used that to torture people, didn't he? Still adamant not to pick a side in this war, she did not fancy being forced to swear an oath of loyalty in the Ancient Language to the corrupted Rider. The Varden didn't do that, so she had less to fear from them, but all the same she would feel more comfortable with a barrier. She felt the flow of energy Laetri gave her to help her, and prepared to try and reach out with her mind. It seemed that wasn't going to be necessary, however. He was just going to... take her mind out her mind or something. She couldn't quite understand it, but she trusted him.
A gasp couldn't help but escape her mouth as she felt her mind being pulled away. It was a shock, and she tried to relax, putting her trust in the Rider, but instinctively she struggled. Trying to suppress the urge to struggle and panic, she reminded herself that a Rider could be trusted, especially if he had the trust of the werecat, who seemed like quite a person who belonged to himself and not the Empire or the Varden. All of a sudden, a great sense of peaceful emptiness came over as her mind entered the world outside her head. It felt like wading out of a pond to suddenly find yourself in a deep, endless ocean. She could feel things with her mind. Her vision was confusing and distracting, sending her conflicting information about what she was interacting with. Her eyes were telling her she was still where she was standing, but her mind was telling her she was touching the life of a blade of grass at her feet. Closing her eyes removed the confusion.
It was a little worrying to stand with her eyes closed. She might be able to feel the life of something nearby, but she couldn't feel what wasn't alive and could only feel what she was concentrating on. This made her essentially blind to all but that tiny blade of grass. For a moment, that blade of grass was the entire world. She opened her eyes again, trying to make sense of what she was feeling and seeing. It took a good deal of effort to reach her mind out, since her mind mostly wanted to retreat back into herself. A bird, smaller than the one Laetri had asked for assistance, was perched on the tree. Cautiously, she focused all her efforts on reaching the bird. Her mind moved out and felt the bird's mind, a bright blue light among the darkness of the lifeless air. It was almost like a star in the night sky, only more real. She could sense the bird's life, but her mind merely brushed it, unable to feel further as though the bird's mind were a slippery sphere she couldn't get a grip on. She spoke to Laetri, and found her voice seeming strangely distant. "This is... disorientating. I know it's best to use my eyes while contacting something, but it feels weird with my mind somewhere else. And I can't quite touch anything's mind. It's like I'm a ghost." she explained her feelings and confusion.
((I don't think Isrydia will be able to do much more than send and receive thoughts and feelings and barricade her mind until she's a Rider, not that that will stop her trying beforehand))

((Probably not...but for the meantime that should be well enough to help her! )) Laetri smiled as he felt Isrydia wandering around, cautiously and constantly strutting and failing here and there. She was still new at this, he reasoned. As an Elf this was nothing more than basic to a child at the age of five years. But to a human this was more than the basic. He was glad to help Isrydia as he felt she had potential. He knew that, if a dragon's egg, by any chance, came to her, it would almost definitely hatch for her. He used to wonder how people know that until he grew a little older. Now, that foolishness was partly out of him. He continued observing her mind as she studied the blade of grass. As he already has studied, he not only felt the blade of grass but also every other thing around him. Though, as always he did not understand all of them. It was a consequence. As Isrydia tried to contact the bird, Laetri was glad. She had found a live animal so quickly and had tried to contact it, maybe even consider it a friend! He retreated back into himself and opened his eyes. Studying Isrydia, he thought he was certain that she was ready for at least a little basic words in the Ancient Language. Just at least enough that if she met an Elf she would not meet her doom the moment they meet. And maybe so that she could befriend some animals. Other than that, she was able to also learn some basic magic at least. Maybe how to cast a werelight..maybe burn things. With his mind, he dragged Isrydia back into herself and said, "Now, I shall teach you a few words of the Ancient Language. Brisingr, is fire. If you say the word with the correct intentions you shall light your target on fire." he said, smooth voice and rich. As an example he reached for his store of magic and said, "Brisingr!". At his command, a fireball the color of Agaravel's sky blue scales appeared in his hand. He then dispersed it. "Now, try doing the same. But this time, just burning that dry wood over there is enough." he instructed Isrydia.

Isrydia could feel her mind being gently guided back to herself. A sense of wholeness and warmth spread through her. It felt almost as if her mind was giving her body a hug and apologizing for leaving. She was relieved, not having been too aware of how to return to herself without Laetri's help. She would have to ask later. Right now she was being taught words of the Ancient Language. This was how to use magic. She had never tried to use magic before, so had no idea if she would be able to. A lot of elves could use magic, but not so many humans could. At least she had managed to explore the world with her mind with some help, which was itself a form of magic. To be able to communicate in that telepathic way was a type of magic many people could use, but manipulating energy by speaking the Ancient Language was something she didn't know if she could do. That did not mean she wouldn't try.
The apprentice watched intently as the Rider cast the basic spell, noting the flames were the same colour as Agaravel's scales. She had been expecting a normal fire colour of red, orange, white or even blue. While this was blue, it wasn't the fierce burning blue of the hottest part of a flame, but a much more solid version. She had seen other people casting orange flames before, and supposed that maybe the colour varied depending on the person. The magic might be able to change the colour of fire itself somehow. Stars varied in colour, too. If her theory that they were made of fire from the gods was correct, perhaps the gods were casting them with magic that varied in colour depending on the god. She wondered what colour her magic would be. Did other spells cast that didn't involve fire also have the same colour?
Her mind was wondering at this new information. It was time to focus and try and use some magic. Unsure of what she was doing, she stared at the dry branch. Trying to block out the rest of the world, she concentrated every part of her mind on picturing that branch, then spoke the single word on the Ancient Language she knew. "Brisingr!"
Nothing happened. She was a little disappointed, but maybe she just wasn't doing it right? This time she pictured the branch on fire, willing it to be set alight. "Brisingr," still nothing. She raised a hand palm out to face it, "Brisingr!" Again the branch was determined to remain unscathed. Isrydia tried to reach out to it, struggling a little to extend a small part of her mind to it. As the branch was dead, there was no life to contact. That wouldn't be any help, so she quickly tugged the tendril of thought back with the rest of her mind dragging it back like a rope. She moved closer to the branch and laid her hand on it. She took a deep breath and closed her eyes. "Brisingr." Opening her eyes, she saw...
The exact same scene she had been standing in before she had closed them. She sighed, sitting on the branch. "I think you're going to have to into more detail. Am I supposed to be picturing the fire or willing it to happen, or what? And why does it have to be 'brisingr', why not just 'fire'?" she was sounding very much confused. All she knew about the Ancient Language was that it was, well, ancient, and that it had deep ties to magic and dragons. She knew the Grey Folk used it to use magic, but she didn't see why that meant they still had to use it today.

Laetri slumped a little in relaxation as Isrydia's eyes were off of him. He was nervous. Nervous, which had once cost his friends their lives. As he picked up her thought of why the fire he summoned was a sky blue, he said, "That is because the color of the fireor any other magic varies from person to person, though usually for a Rider the color is the same as the color of the scales of their dragons." As Isrydia chanted the word and nothing happened, Laetri sighed. He held nothing against Isrydia, indeed for such a human at such a young age magic will be very difficult. Again he seemed to sigh in exasperation the three other times she failed.
Agaravel snorted at the attempts and allowed her words to be heard by all around them,"Laetri, why don't you teach Isrydia how she is supposed to picture. Give her another example but keep your minds connected. And this time, use the same spell as she is right now.". Laetri nodded and turned to Isrydia as she spoke. He understood her confusion. As an Elf, the Ancient Language came naturally. But for a human it must be confusing "You must, both picture the fire and will it. And it has to be 'brisingr' because the Ancient Language is now part of nature. You say the word, yet the word is the thing and the thing is the word. Same as how you have named your blade Nettle and it now has it's nature based on the name. Try again." he instructed her.

It was a little unsettling for Isrydia to have a question she hadn't even spoken answered purely by Laetri dipping his mind into the surface of her own. She wasn't sure she wanted him there, and definitely didn't want anyone prying around as they felt like it. That was something she would have to work on. She could instinctively shield, however weakly, the innermost part of her mind, but she needed to learn how to put up a wall around all her mind so that she would be alerted and could react if anyone even tried to just brush against her. Having had a very normal human upbringing, the idea of people quickly stealing into her thoughts was alien and strange to her. She could see that it would help people stay honest, but she couldn't help but she liked her thoughts to be to herself. In some ways, the discomfort was also due to it reminding her that she had no way of defending herself. Whatever the case, it felt weird and uncomfortable with this new feeling of something seeing strings of thought and it highlighted and strengthened her desire to learn to protect her mind.
What Laetri did have to say was interesting, be the source of the question strange. The magic's colour varied from person to person. Maybe it could say something about the person. Then again, a Rider's magic colour didn't say much about them aside from the colour of their dragons. It wasn't as if the dragon that chose to hatch for them's colour was determined by their personality or skills or anything, that was just random as far as she knew. So perhaps it said very little about the person, then. Just like how the colour of a dragon's scales didn't determine the colour of its personality, the colour of a person's magic might not either. As for the Ancient Language, it was a hard concept to get her head around. The word was the thing? She hadn't even picked Nettle's name, that had been her brother, but Nettle was a sword, not a plant. It was named because it was a good stinger. So fire was named brisingr because it was good at being... fire? "The Ancient Language is strange. I know from legends you can't lie in it. Is that why naming things in the Ancient Language effectively commands them? Because you can't lie about that the thing... is? I'm confusing myself here," she shook her head and decided to get on with trying to use magic.
Isrydia spent longer this time preparing her attempt. "I don't know if you were looking in my mind last time, but if you do that this time maybe you can see where I'm going wrong," She told Laetri. She stared at the branch, imagining in vivid detail the flames licking along it. Hang on, she'd never manage to produce that much fire on her first try - she scaled down her imaginary flames. A small patch on the log was now aflame in her mind. She had always had a good imagination, but now would be the time to put it to the test. She next summoned a great will to bring these flames into a reality. Every fibre of her being was focused on bringing this fire into the real world. It had to exist. At this point she had practically convinced herself it was already there in front of her. She could almost feel its warmth. Finally, when she felt she was ready, she stretched out her palm close to the dry bark. "Brisingr," her voice this time was full of certainty, far more confident than before.
Despite her best efforts, nothing happened. As determined as she was, she was starting to feel disheartened. This was only the beginning, of course, but she had been hoping for something to show from her efforts so far. Then again, there was a high chance she just wasn't gifted with the ability to use magic. She was aware that she was not as attuned with nature as the elves were, so would be hardly open to the natural flow of magic in the world. Most humans were pretty closed to nature; perhaps that was why so few humans could ever use magic, while most elves could.

Laetri was slowly losing his patience. How hard could it be?!?! All she had to do was reach into herself, call upon the magic and command the fire to do what she wishes. Had she been an Elf Laetri would have already lost his temper. He struggled for a calm expression as she began talking about knowing very little and confusing herself and so. This time, as Isrydia asked him to, Laetri poked his mind into hers as she attempted again to use it. This time, Laetri had an idea. It was going to be harsh but itshould work. He stood up and walked to her slowly.
"I have an idea to help you learn magic much easier." he said to her. As he finished talking he went to a tree and cast magic on it so that it was impossible to be lit on fire unless you used magic. Agaravel then broke down the tree and Laetri said, "Now what I want you to do is light that wood on fire, without any magic." and as he spoke he took out two rocks meant for fire. Rubbed them against each other to make sure they work and handed them to Isrydia. He gestured for her to light the tree.

Although she had been oblivious to the nervous feelings Laetri had felt earlier, Isrydia could tell he was getting frustrated she couldn't use magic. She couldn't help it! She was trying her best. While not all elves could use magic, a lot of them could, so no doubt he was used to people shooting fireballs and levitating stuff with ease. It was clear to her she was lacking something fundamental to magic, having not been exposed to it at all as a child so being clueless to its workings, the whole concept having an air of mystery to it. Elves must have it so easy... everyone she had met since committing herself to adventure by becoming William's apprentice had had such great skills and talents. Elves, Riders, dwarves, knights... and she was just a plain old human. While travelling with William was brilliant and had taught her so much, letting her see things she could have only dreamed of, it had been a blow for her ego as everyone was so much better at everything than her. She had a lot to learn about just about everything, and couldn't wait to actually be in the same league as the people she was meeting.
Isrydia looked doubtful as she took the two rocks. "Laetri... I don't see how this is going to work. I'm no elf, so there's probably something fundamental I'm lacking. If that's the case, since I've never been around magic in my entire life before, it's going to take a while for me to cast even the most basic spell. What is it you had in mind to help me? I doubt I'll manage magic anytime soon, but if you could tell me how to, I don't know, access magic - I'm not sure how to put it - I might be able to practice and maybe would some day manage it." she shrugged, unsure of what was wrong in this situation. Whatever Laetri suggested, she would practice daily until she managed to cast a spell, whatever it would take to get her using magic.
