Arkantos awoke near the foothills of Du Fells Nangoroth, the Blasted Mountains, with an incredibly splitting headache. Gods...my head feels like a Urgal just- his train of thought was interrupted by a stabbing pain in his back.
Rolling over, he found the source: his books. Opening the sack, he saw a note written in an elaborately beautiful script in the ancient language. It said: This will be useful. ~Linnea the note itself was attached to one of the more nondescript tomes, entitled Wild Dragon Population and Census. It was obviously pre-Wyrdfell, else why would Linnea have taken total control over his body and wrote that note? He opened it to find that a page had already been marked. His face lit up with incredulity as he read.
Looking around suddenly, he grabbed the sack and started scrambling deeper into the mountains to find what Riders now long dead could not find, what the Forsworn, not even Galbatorix could find. A wild dragon's egg, lying dormant for centuries...

Auron snarled as he pushed the horse even harder. The poor thing had been running through the Hadrac for most of the night and well into the day before he'd seen the first shady glimpse of the tall peaks. He'd be lucky if the d**n thing didn't flounder. He cursed as the creature slowed to a trot, it tounge beginning to loll out of it's mouth. He'd have to be careful or he'd have to take another hit on his salary in order to pay for the pitiful thing. He dug a small hole in the sand and filled it with some water from a skin tied to his waist, watching the horse drink as he sat at the base of a dune.
He took in the sight of the shadowed peaks of Du Fells Nangoroth. He'd seen the figure traveling in that direction and knew if he didn't come back with something the king would probably shread his soul. He let out a frustrated sigh and got to his feet, donning a light traveling cloak. He waited until the horse finished the water and then grabbed the reigns, pulling the horse along. He narrowed his eyes at the forest sighted in the distance. He knew of the creatures that inhabited Du Welden Varden, creatures that had once been elves but had embraced a more primal sense of self. He sneer at the trees and pulled on the reigns, continueing his trek across the sandy expanse.

After traveling throughout the desert for about three too four weeks, the trail had proven cold. The target was lost. Crimson just couldn't contain his frustration. Without much through, he punched the rough rock wall with as much force as he could muster. The skin on his nuckles broke on impact. The pain went through him, dull from the lack of feeling. "d**nit..." The target was either dead or had elluded him and went south. Either way, the man had a sliver of living. "Theres nothing left to do but head back..." No sooner did he spoke he heard a howl near by. Huh? What did Fang find now? Without another word, he trekked through the mountains, causing no disturbance at all, moving similiar to a shadow, following the howl.
A great wolf stalked out from a crevice onto a ledge over looking Arkantos' position, howling when it caught sight and wiff of Arkantos to let crimson know that he found something. The wolf was bigger than a horse, with paws that would make a bear's look like tiny rabbit paws in comparison, with dark gray fur and baleful yellow eyes. The beast snarled down at him, showing teeth that glinted in the light, teeth that could tear the flesh of a horse in no time. Then it began to jump down onto different ledges as it made its way down, moving closer. Soon, it was about twenty feet away from him, on a 7 foot ledge circling around, snapping at Arkantos.
Crimson finally made it too the location of the howl, and saw what he was howled for. A single man who seemed to look pretty dirty, but not dirty enough to have been out here for as long as Crimson had. Without rushing, he pulled out a crossbow, pulled the string, and inserted the bolt. Currently, Crimson was in dirty brown cloaks and robes, though his weapons hang easily on his side. Then, his face masked by a ugly rag, he called out to the stranger. "Well, what kind of man can be found all the way out here, away from civilization, without so much as a companion?" His voice held no humor, all it held was coldness. "Now, awnser quickly or the whistle of this bolt will be the last thing you'll hear. Who are you are where do you come from?" His voice was even and controlled.

Arkantos looked up in wonder as he heard a howl. No, surely, that can't be....I would have sensed a pack this far out...there's no way-- his train of thought was cut off as his curiosity was confirmed. A massive wolf, bigger than any save for Wrrg, leapt down onto a nearby ledge and started to circle him. It was impossible that a wolf would think him a threat-but this one did. He reached out with his mind, sharing his scent and name, wolf-fashion, as he had learned from the Surdan and DuWeldenvarden packs. The wolf lowered it's hackles as he approached cautiously, eventually lowering its' massive head under his hand and allowing him to scratch behind his ears as it stepped down from the ledge to his level. He lowered his rucksack full of books and sat down with the beast and was getting ready to take a nap when he heard a voice call out to him. Looking up quickly, he found the source, a man dressed in dark colors to blend in with the rock, his face concealed by rags. Standing up wearily, he replied in the most absentminded, bureaucratic voice he could come up with, "None of your concern, good sir, just some Varden business is all. And I suggest you don't stop me. This wolf here is probably one of a great many more, and he may not think of me as a threat, but he may attack you as soon as I leave. Now, if you excuse me, I should be going. Things to do, what." he said, as he hitched up his rucksack and intoned, "Stenr". A staff made of pure, smooth granite sprung from the ground and flew into his hand. "Now, to find that dragon egg before that Shade finds me...", he muttered to himself, not aware that his voice carried up to the figure on the ledge above him, nor that the figure was even there anymore.

Crimson was somewhat impressed by the man's skill with animals. And at the same time, he was furios. How dare he touch Fang like some pup! He forced himself to calm down and analayze the situation before doing anything rash. Alright, this man is skilled with reaching out with his mind, so therefore it stands to reason that he may know magic. Not only that, he is of the Varden, so he may know certain secrets... Then he gave out a warning shot, aimed at his leg, while sending out a message to Fang to jump back from him, telling him as best he could not to trust the stranger just yet but to not harm either, just keep him from running away.
Fang, somewhat confused, lept back and growled a little at Arkantos, though not making any sort of threatening motion. His hair was on its end as it crouched, ready to make any sort of leap to keep him from leaving, even to pounce on him and pin him down.
After he was sure that Fang was in a suitable position, he reloaded and then called out, "Now, tell me your name, or I'll put a bolt into ya, and I'll sic Fang on ya. I've dealt with the Varden before, and I've dealt with mages, a few dwarves, and countless other fugitives of all kinds. I don't think you would want me ta be your enemy." He's looking for a dragon egg... and a shade is close behind him? This could be beneficial to me.

(FINALLY! some place to post)(if this post is too short, srry, its hard to tell while using a pocket pc) As Sonya flew through the hot air of the desert, she caught a whiff of a familiar scent. "I smell Arkantos. He must be in those mountains." Sonya told Vedrit "What in the world is he doing here?" Vedrit wondered. "He is not alone." She cautions him, already knowing that curiosity is tugging at Vedrit. While Vedrit wasnt really part of the Varden, he would be if he could ever get word of whether he was accepted or not, he still wanted to know how his "good friend" was. As they circled around the area where the scent was strongest, they looked for Arkantos. A man with a crossbow was not far, his weapon aimed at Arkantos. "If you value your life, lower the weapon." Vedrit yelled, unsheathingbhis sword while Sonya landed

Crimson heard a flaping over head and the winds seemed to be somewhat more dangerous than before. After reaching into Fang's mind, he could sense fear. Fear, but of what? Certainly not of this man before him. But what could he possibly be afr- His throughts were interupted as a great white dragon landed not too far off with an elf mounted on top of it.
The white dragon shakened him more than he would care to be. A-a-a dragon rider... an actuel dragon rider?!? What made him even more concerned was that the rider was an elf, and he knew from many stories that they were rarely seen, and a good thing too. People told of them as masters of combat, magical arts, and could ensnare one's senses.
Luckily for Crimson, his fear was hidden by the rags he wore. After forcing himself, and Fang, to calm down he began to think the situation. Okay, now I have little to no chance of beating these people, espicially when its three on one. Maybe if it was just me and the guy with the stone staff, a slim chance if it was me and this elf with the guy. But add a dragon in the mix, and I stand no bloody chance. Heck, even escape would be unlikely.
For the first time in Crimson's life, he knew what it meant to be the prey instead of the predator. Slowly, ever so slowly, he reluctantly lowered his weapon, and stared at the elf mounted on the dragon. "Okay rider, looks like I stand no chance, what with that oversized lizard that your riding watching your back." Even though he knew he was practically flirting with death itself, he didn't let that stop him. Without your bravado, your nothing. Atleast with it I might get through this with my rep intact. "Okay, so let me guess. Your a rider, and you know this guy who is apparantly being chased by a shade who happens to work for the Varden, right?"
"Well, ya got me. Ya bloody d**n got good ol' Crimson!" He couldn't contain his rage at the position he was in. He was mostly mad at himself really. I should have just killed the bloody bastard when I had the chance, then walk on out of here before this bloody elf on his bloody dragon came and made every blooming thing messed up on my part!
OOC: This is amusing. Cause yesterday, I was playing with my pals at a D&D game and we basically met a dragon. Considering I was the wizard of the group, I did the opposite of what I am doing now. Talk about coincidence. lol

((D&D is life. What level were you? I used to be an epic level dragon/ dark cleric. It pwned. I had so much fun, I forgot that I had to fight Tiamat and all of my buddies got slaughtered. Oops. ^^))
Arkantos looked on with amusement. This was the feared Crimson, the most notorious outlaw in Alagaesia? He chuckled, then sobered immediately as Vedrit landed, sword drawn, on his white dragon. I suppose he thinks he looks heroic like that. He mused, as he assessed Crimson's look and surreptitiously copied it, winding a blood soaked rag around one of his eyes to make it look like he was injured.
"Alright, everyone, stand down already or I'll have to kill all of you! I've got no time for this! That Shade could be here any minute, and I want to make sure that egg hatches for me before he gets here, okay? Now, if you'll excuse me, I've got an abandoned dragon's eyrie to locate and loot." He called out, as he set forth purposely, drawing his blade and covering it in white flames as he looked pointedly at both of them. Fools, the lot of them. When he became a Rider, he would do away with this foolish talk of alliegiences and oaths. He would be the first Rider to reinstate the neutral location of Vroengard as the Rider capital, thereby reforming the old order. And then, then, Alagaesia would have...peace...He shook his head and dashed the notion to the farthest reaches of his mind. There was only the here and now.

Post by Ardocc & Mani on Sept 9, 2007 18:12:05 GMT -5
Ardocc had been tracking a herd of four or five deer through the brush at the foot of the mountain all night and day. His eyes drooped as he crept through sparse trees and bushes on the skirts of where the mountain meets the desert. He planned on trapping them against a steep wall of the mountain before felling one with his arrow. He held an abnormally large and dark wood bow. It was nearly as big as he and used to belong to an urgal longbow archer. He sighed as he thought back to when he got it and the things he'd been through, until all in one second he heard a wolf's howl and in response his prey scampered as fast as they could in the other direction. d**nit, a whole day of tracking wasted. He sat back and cursed his bad luck. Then his stomach gave a reminder as to why he was doing it in the first place. He decided to go and find the wolf that made the deer flee and try and salvage what looked like a dinner-less day. As he walked he began to hear many voices and a loud thud. As if a boulder just fell from the sky. Soon he saw the thing in which made that sound, a real life dragon! "Oh my god," he whispered aloud. And crouched behind a boulder as he saw three armed people that looked as though they were opposed .. and of course...a dragon! Then one with a sword and a rag over their eye spoke, and he thought he heard something about a shade, dragons, looting. Ardocc cast a look at the dragon again in amazement when the one with the sword enchanted it with white flames that startled Ardocc and caused him to trip over his own feet and fall over, his bow arrows and bow clattering as he tried to regain his feet. His cover was blown.

Auron tied the weary horse at the base of the mountain, leaving it with a hole of water and a small patch of slightly withered grass. He began the aurdous climb up the mountain and froze when he saw Arkantos and Crimson. "This just isn't my day..." He thought to himself as he crept up to the duo, staying down wind of Crimson's wolfs' keen sense of smell. He crouched behind a small cluster of boulders and eyed the two of them.
He nearly groaned as several loud thuds filled the air. He knew that sound. Gods, his day was just getting better and better. He looked up and hissed his displeasure at the giant white dragon. He noted the elven rider with distaste and cursed his luck.
"Alright, everyone, stand down already or I'll have to kill all of you! I've got no time for this! That Shade could be here any minute, and I want to make sure that egg hatches for me before he gets here, okay? Now, if you'll excuse me, I've got an abandoned dragon's eyrie to locate and loot."
Auron's flashing ember eyes widenend as the fool announced his plan. He felt a devilish grin forming and almost let a snicker out until he froze, the sound of a bow clattering to the ground coming from the otherside of the group. "Dammit!" he cursed, reaching for his blade. He hissed a few words in the same gutteral language he used when taking down Arkantos' ward and his form shimmered slighty, taking on the face of a young man with brown eyes and red hair. He now had a small smattering of freckles on his face and was wearing a beige tunic and brown pants with hunting boots. He decided to keep his blade hidden for now unless he was approached by someone with the intent to kill.
He hadn't take this form in a long time. This was the body of his host, a young man by the name of Markus. He was a young sorceror whose parents were killed by a rider. He kept himself hidden even in this form, hoping not to have to show himself.

Vedrit was about to mock Arkantos and him thinking he could kill him and his dragon, when, through Sonya, heard somthing from a little ways down the mountain. Looking, he sees a man recovering his feet, a large long bow in his hands. Vedrit sighed, "Alright. Im no fan of fighting, so everyone just put away the weapons, and just chill out." He said, loud enough for the man lower on the mountain. 'This is becoming populated. I wasnt expecting to see any people out here as it was.' He thought to Sonya. To Arkantos, he said "An egg? Congratulations. I just hope you don't go and wind up dead, or in the empires hands. What good would you be then? As for the Shade, it shouldn't be much of a worry, unless it brought all of the empire with it." 'Another dragon...I wasn't expecting to see another one hatch until I was much older, or Galbatorix was dead.' 'Agreed. Who would have thought that Arkantos would even find one.' Sonya responded. 'There was suprise laying hidden in her words, but she is right. I wonder how he came to find it. I thought that trash heap of an emperor had them all locked up...' Vedrit wondered to himself. Life is so full of mysteries.
((YEARG!! So fast!)) Motion quickly drew his eyes toward a boy who was slowly moving up towards them, and Vedrit began to wonder what buisness this boy had here, and how long he had been behind the boulder.

Ardocc just regained his balance and had one arrow at ready in his bow, though useless he knew against dragon or rider alike, when the rider made his order, or maybe more of a suggestion. Ardocc did't know if all these people were in the same confused state he was, but he supposed that they weren't there from coincidence. So he lowered his bow with arrow at ready to waist height and shifted closer towards the group while giving the dragon a wide berth and keeping eyes on every visible person and perhaps those still unseen.

OOC: Sorry it took so long. But anyway, my character was a level 2 wizard/warlock 1. Warlocks are cool! My group is a duskblade dwarf, a human soulknife, a druid, and an an elven cleric.
Now that the elven rider had arrived, Crimson was certain that this was something that he wasn't going to walk away from easily. And to make matters worse, I am hardly being acknowledged by the lizard or the rider. This certainly wasn't his day. Not at all.
Okay, lets go over the facts. That guy done there is looking for a dragon egg, this rider works for the varden rebels, that dragon can crush, burn, maim, and chew on me. But... if the legends are true, the dragon cannot exsist without the rider. But this rider is elven, which stacks against me even more so, for elves are supposedly perfect in every way... but what if... He quickly looked over the dragon, looking for some sign of weakness in its scales. After a short while, he came to the conclusion that he couldn't find anything from his angle so his thoughts moved to Arkantos, who was leaving the scene. I gotta find this egg. This may very well mean a balance against this rider and many others. But I gotta get over there...
Another factor that he was starting to notice, was the elf was distracted by some noise off to the side. Not waiting another moment, he launched himself forward, and aimed a shot right at the elf. Lets see if they are as powerful as peopel say they are. Once he landed on the ground after a good15 foot fall, he tumbled on till he reached some cover fromt he dragon and rider. After overlooking the area, he began to move toward Arkantos. "Fang, look around for a gaint egg of unusual color!" And Fang quickly moved out through the rocky terrain in search of an egg.
As he made those thoughts, he quickly reloaded his cross-bow, and took out a set of bolas and proceded toward Arkantos while trying to maintain some cover from the dragon. Once he had there was 20 feet of space, Crimson threw the bolas, hoping to trip him. All the while, he made sure that he still had a view of the dragon. But now because of his different angle, he could tell that there was another figure around. What the hell is this, a varden raiding party!?!?!

((Wizard 2/Warlock 1 ?!?!?! What kind of dragon was that?!?! Your DM is sadistically evil...I mean, really...that's just not fair, mate...))
Arkantos threw a lightning bolt at Crimson and incinerated the bolas with a word, running off down the mountainside, only to see his way blocked by a young man with red hair--"Demon scum, I see through your disguise! My holy sight will not be hampered by your illusions of shadow. For the Goddess I cast you back where you came, foul creature!" he said, as his ring siezed control of his eyes and let him see Auron sneaking up in disguise. He charged forward, his sword out in front of him, and made a slashing movement with his blade in midair, shouting, "Grind!". I hope this works as the ancient language should... he thought, as he felt the power leave him and form a magical gateway, previously thought only theoretical and highly dangerous to said theoretical user, opened to lead to a cave entrance some distance away and 300 feet up. He ran through the gateway and closed it behind himself, laughing to shake off the feeling of cowardice at making a heroic speech like that and then fleeing. Looking down, he saw the rest of them arrayed some distance down. Only Vedrit and Auron could get him now, and they would be too late by the time he got to the egg...
((Ok, if Danny or someone could PM me the Rider quiz, I kinda need it. Thanks ^^))

((Kalaa is taking too long)) Arkantos, the fool, charged right into the young boy, "Demon scum, I see through your disguise! My holy sight will not be hampered by your illusions of shadow. For the Goddess I cast you back where you came, foul creature!". It was almost complete gibberish to Vedrit. Almost; if he had not encountered a Shade before, he would not know that they were the worst living, or non-living things there ever was. Although little could stand against an elf, Vedrit had no intention of fighting a Shade. He lept on Sonya, then looked to see that Arkantos was stepping into some sort of portal. Wishing him good luck, Vedrit shielded his mind from the Shade, and anyone else, and checked his surroundings. The man who had attacked him was hidden , but his presence could be felt. The man from lower down wasn't doing much, and neither was the Shade. He took his available time making sure he, or Sonya could block in any direction.

Auron ducked as the sword came his way, coming uncomfortably close. He cursed his luck as he was forced to jump back as Arkantos disappeared through the gate. He followed the mountain and hissed his displeasure, eyeing the figure that appeared about halfway up. He glanced at the rider and took his chances, dodging past them and starting to scale the mountain. He cursed and dropped the illusion, taking the magic from it and pushing himself to an inhuman speed. He grinned as he caught sight of Crimson’s giant beast. He dashed past it and continued upwards, keeping his sight of Arkantos. He narrowed them and decided then and there he was going to kill him for all the trouble he caused.
He past the halfway point on the mountain and pushed himself even faster as the thought of bloodshed took over and Auron Sol’veck came to the fore of his mind. “Where is he? I’ll kill him for that blow he struck me!” He hissed as he raced upward, quickly catching up to the human. He grinned maliciously as he saw the flicker of the edge of Arkantos’ cloak as he turned around a rock. He slowed as he reached the rock and jumped, clutching the side of the rock before he realized it wasn’t a rock, but rather a dragon nest. He narrowed his eyes at the fragments of shell that littered the area before kneeling and brushing some green egg fragment off his pants and boots. He looked around as he rose and cursed his luck as Arkantos was nowhere to be seen.

Arkantos swayed as the magic took effect on his flesh, causing his vision to swim and blur. Staggering into the cave, he sealed the entrance and caused a ball of light to emerge from his ring and hover over his head, giving him light in the now pitch dark cavern. He stumbled forward and gasped out in pain as he tripped and fell on something hard that had been concealing a declining slope, causing his leg to sound a resounding crack as the bone broke. The light wavered as Arkantos, too, wavered between the waking and unconcious worlds. He lost. His body collapsed, but got back up, with Arkantos still unconcious. The ring on his chest, however was glowing brighter than ever. His eyes opened, but it was not Arkantos' mind behind those eyes. An alien intelligence burned there, and it looked around before causing the air around it to warp and shimmer, changing it's appearance to that of an elf, female, with millenia of experience behind it. It effortlessly healed it's broken leg and turned around and picked up the offending object that had caused her host to break it's leg. It was the dragon's egg, resplendantly __________ colored and glinting in the magical light. Sheilding her conciousness from the hatching probe of the dragon, she placed it in the crook of her arm and reopened the cave entrance and walked out into the approaching dust storm on the horizon...

Crimson knew alot about numerous things. He knew about the rules of the towns all around the Empire and some in Surda too. He knew about many things in nature that he had needed to use time and time again to keep himself alive. Crimson even knew a little bit about dwarves, weaponry and a great deal about the body. The one thing that he really wished he knew about right about then was magic.
The lightening bolt that Arkantos threw at Crimson wasn't at all expected. It almost hit Crimson if he didn't jump out from cover at the last second. The rocks which he hid behidn exploded, sending rubble everywhere. Damnit, I really didn't make the smart choice here. I should run away from here right about now...
It was at that moment that Arkantos began to run away. Course, running away usually is a sign of weakness.... Gah! Why the hell not? So he gave chase, commanding his companion to follow suit while covering his back. Fang soon was running beside him, so Crimson quickly grabbed him, and began to gain on Arkantos, who had just stopped infront of some young man in red hair. What the devil now-?
The gibberish of what he spoke didn't make too much sense, except a few words, such as demon scum. Oh... DAMNIT!!! SHADE!!! His fear resounded into Fang, who tried to stop, though he kept speeding toward Arkantos, as he vanished behind a portal, with Crimson on his back.
They were confused as they came out of the portal, and behind a pile of rubble. Damnit! What is with all this? I gotta find out more about magic! He hopped off of Fang and took a good look around his suroundings. It didn't take long to notice Arkantos vanish into the darkness of some cave. Before he could even follow, the cave sealed behind him. "Damn. I guess I'll be heading back down the mountain..." To what? They are still there. We are gonna have some real trouble if we get back down, espicially that shade! "I guess I'll be sitting up here for a while, right Fang?"
So they sat outside the cave, waiting for only a little while before the cave reopened. Oh, he's back? Prehaps I can actuelly fight this guy one on on- Instead of the man who walked in, and elven female walked out. Oh, atleast its just a girl. He quickly attempted to shield his mind and pulled out a his whip from his belt into his left hand and his longsword into his right. His eyes trained on the egg. Now THAT will be worth 50 bounties! With a crack of his whip, he called to the elf, "Hey! Elf! I bet I could bet ya in a one on one match. No magic or nothin, unless your afraid... hehehe!"OOC: I hope its okay if I fight the elf Arkantos. I know its no contest. Crimson will lose his pride in battle. Tis a pity.

Auron narrowed his eyes at dwarf as he called a challenge to Arkantos. He didn't understand how he knew but he realised that that elf was the same human that had caused all this trouble. He slithered through the rocks, keeping out of sight. He knew that the elf saw him but he was more worried about the dwarf. He swept up behind him and grinned as he whispered something in that dark, thick language of the shades.
His form shimmered wildly for a moment before he faded, only a slight outline forming. With that he made his way out from his cover, striding over to the female and looking at her with intensive clarity. He really didn't care if that human saw his outline, though it wasn't very likely. "So, what trick have you pulled this time, Arkantos?" He stared at her, eyes gleaming. "This is a new, isn't it? I mean a female is a little much don't you think?" He paused for a moment, glancing at the egg in her hands. His eyes narrowed and he began to formulate a plan. Presenting the King with a dragon egg would be the ultimate repentance for allowing the human to do all that damage. He might even shoot up in the Kings ranks if he suceeded.
"How about you just go ahead and hand me that pretty little egg and we can make this short and sweet. I might even let you live." He hissed, a hungry look in his eyes. That same look that he got every time he became power-hungry. His eyes bled into a blood red color, the shade coming foward even more and his lost the last traces of his disguise. The red hair became darker and a palable aura of shadow seemed to fall over him. He grinned, his sharply filed teeth gleaming in the light of the now setting sun.

Linnea, acting on Arkantos' memories of the Shade, merely raised an eyebrow, and intoned in the ancient language in the lilting, musical voice shared by all elves. "Arkantos? Ah, yes, now I remember, he's that little weed of a human who found my ring. Unfortunately, I don't know how long his body can withstand the forces of magic at work in him. As for this egg, I have no intention of letting any human other than my host have it. This egg will be the catalyst for the next Dragon Wars, and then I can rest in peace when the souls of thousands follow me into the abyss... Afer all, isn't that what you Shades want too, Auron?". She grinned too, and started to give off an aura of white light, that looked pure, but on closer inspection actually made the observer more fearful of it than of the shadowy aura given off by Auron...
