He raised an eyebrow, but didn't say anything as he put out the fire in a way that would cool quickly, then gathered his things. It didn't take long for him to become ready. He shouldered his pack, "Do we walk?" he asked.
He had no idea why they needed to leave, and he and Sonya had been traveling for a long time, but found no good reason not to leave with their new companion.

"Yes lets."
Elendrial smiled at Vedrit. He was different than what she had expected most outsiders to be. He was nice and forgiving unlike most other people she grew up with. She found herself staring at him but quickly turned away.
"Where to? I'll let you decide as long as its awhile from here."
The elf stroked Shadowen and placed the little dragon on her shoulder. He wouldn't be able to do this in a couple of days. She knew that he would grow fast.
"Vedrit..I've told you my story, well some of it. What's yours?"
She had wanted to ask the question for awhile but feared the answer. Alas, if she was going to travel with him she needed to know.

"I have no where to go. The woe of the unbound travelor." he said with a smirk, which faded at her last question. "Well, as you can guess, I have spent a few years wandering the land, met many faces, and killed many threats." he said. He left out the part about him falling in love once or twice, but that was too close to his heart to share.
"My history really is boring, the most notable events being a slight run-in with a Shade, and meeting a couple others with dragons or dragon eggs." he said, running his hand down Sonya's side, the other hand on his pack strap which was half on

Elendrial listened intently to every word that escaped his lips especially when the word shade appeared. Her face faded from a smile.
"What was the name of the shade?"
A forgotten friend of her was a shade, well at least she thought he was her friend. He betrayed her many times but he was the closest thing she had to one. He was killed before her father was and even though her only friend had died, she felt no sadness. He would no longer dissapoint her and harm her. She was safe from him.
"Lets move deeper into the Spine for now. While walking we can chart our path. Or perhaps we will go wherever the world wishes."
She only said this because she knew she would always be on the move. Surely Galbatorix knew she had a dragon for even these trees were his spies. Now he would want her more than ever.

He thought for a moment, "The name escapes me, though the Shade favored wolves." he said. He couldn't even remember the gender of the body of the Shade. He remembered the wolves because they weren't normal wolves.
He shrugged off the thought and followed her deeper into the Spine

Elendrial turned and faced the forest ahead of her. She knew her "friend" favored animals, but never knew what kind. It could possibly him or another. Secretly inside she hoped Vedrit had been the one to kill him. She would certainly thank him later.
"Thats interesting. So you said you were from here?"

He nodded, "Yes not far from here, though I'm sure there's nothing left." he said. The encampment his brothers made, and where he gre up, was likely abandoned, pillaged By animals, and overgrown by nature by now.
"She is an interesting woman." Sonya commented, casting a sly look at Vedrit. "She is. Or she is just putting on a show." he said back to her, keeping their conversation private

Elendrial walked silently for a few minutes then suddenly came to a complete halt. She dropped to the ground and put her ear to it. Something, someone was out there. An animal possibly? No more like a human.
"Vedrit get as low to the ground as you can and ready your bow. I fear we are not alone."
She carefully grabbed her dragon who was now clutching to her shoulder, almost falling, and held him close to her chest with her left hand and placed her right hand on her sword. Fighting one handed was tough but she had practiced swordplay for many years and this was one of the tests.

He dropped down to a low crouch, Sonya trying to hide herself aswell. Vedrit didn't hear anything, and Sonya didn't sense anything. What creature was it that escaped them both?
He readied his bow, knocking an arrow, though he kept his hands close to his sword, should the intruder be closer

Elendrial opened her mind to her surroundings and focused specifically on the place the sound had come from. A creature on four legs, it had to be. She slowly raised her sword and pointed to the sound and as soon as she did a whinny was heard.
Could it be? Fira?
Elendrial dropped her sword, stood up and moved to the sound. As she peered into the tangled mess of tree branches, she could see a black stallion galloping toward her. Quickly she pushed through the branches and raced toward the horse, not thinking about any possibility of a trap.
"Fira my gorgeous horse, have you followed me all this way?"
The horse neighed and grunted at the sound of her voice.
"Vedrit, Vedrit! It's just my horse. He followed me here from Hel--"
She abruptly stopped speaking and examined her surroundings. Surely the horse could not have followed her on his own. He was brought here by someone else. Quickly she mounted Fira and raced toward Vedrit.
"It's a trap. Be ready to fight."

He put his bow and arrow away since it would only get in the way and drew his sword, guarding his and Sonya's minds as she opened her senses to all that was around them.
"Great. A trap. Who do I have to kill now?" he wondered. He was glad that El had found her horse, so they would be able to get out of there quickly if need be, but he hated traps. Traps were for cowards.
He looked around, backing up so his back was to Sonya, wondering who was stupid enough to attack two elvs and a full grown dragon

Elendrial did not want to fight anymore. To most, after killing so much they become numb but to her, it hurt every time. She rode Fira back to where she dropped her sword and then moved down from the horse. As soon as her feet hit the ground Fira reared up at a black creature that jumped out from a bush. The elf swiftly moved toward the creature and stabbed it in the heart. It screamed and shriveled up. No sooner had she killed one, more sprang out at her. She fought with one hand and protected her dragon with all her might but there were to many.
"Vedrit! Vedrit!"
Her screams were hard to hear over the shreaks and shouts of the creatures she was attacking.
Shadowen, I need your help. Please little dragon.
The hatchling started to glow blue and white and black one at a time quickly picking up speed until he appeared to be frozen. All of the sudden a great burst of light came from him and Elendrial. That was the last Elendrial saw.
"Ved...."

Vedrit chased after her as she rode past, so he wasnt far when she screamed out for him. His sword was a blur of flashing steel, the creatures falling, though not all fell from the sword as Sonya attacked thier minds. He slashed and hacked, killing many before the creatures knew what was going on, and then they began attacking him. Though there were many of them, and they kept rushing from the bushes, he and Sonya were too much, and the strange creatures began running, seeing how many of the other creatures had died and had not made any progress to taking down Vedrit.
He stood there, panting, for a moment, listening to the squeeks as Sonya continued to kill them with her mind. He went to Elendrial and saw that she was covered in bruises and cuts, but nothing seemed to have been broken or deeply cut. Shadowen was sniffing her, occasionally licking a wound. He sighed, "Lets leave this place." he said to Sonya, "Ill ride the horse with El untill she wakes.". She nodded and Vedrit touched minds with the horse, which came, and he lifted El onto it before gathering what remained of their stuff and Shadowen and mounted the horse. Nestling the baby dragon infront of El, he sat behind her and wrapped an arm around her waist and asked the horse to go, Sonya following

Elendrial woke up to the galloping of a horse and an arm around her waist. She jerked up sending pain all througout her body. Slowly she leaned back against Vedrit and cuddled the hatchling in her arms.
"Vedrit, where are we going?"
Her voice was weak and quiet. With one arm she cuddled Shadowen and with the other she held onto Vedrit's arm. She felt safe with him but that was no the only feeling she felt toward him. She wasn't sure what it was but it made her happy.

"Somewhere safer." was all he said. There was a spot in the Spine, so his brothers told him long ago it seemed, a spot where the things of the mountains didn't go. A plain, and not-out-of-the-ordinary spot of forest. They said that the only way to know if you reached the spot was to cast out with your mind and only find trees and plants. When he first heard it, he thought it rediculous; a place in a forest where only trees and plants could be found? But he counted on finding that place. He had been shown it once, but thought it a regular bit of forest, and never bothered going back.
After a while the horse slowly stopped and Vedrit opened his mind to the world. "Its not empty, but its safe." he said to Sonya as she looked about

Elendrial wondered where they were off to. Vedrit seemed deep in thought, very concentrated on the world around him. As she waited to know where they were going, she thought of all that had happened. The day seemed to all blur together. Her dragon, new friends, killing and fighting. It all made her head spin. She felt Vedrit breath in and out as she leaned back against his chest. A moment she would remember forever. Other than the hatching of her dragon, this feeling she had for the elf would be the highlight of her day.
"Vedrit, have you ever been in love?"
The question was subtle and Elendrial didn't realize how quickly it escaped. She almost wished she could take it back, almost but not 100%.

He blinked in surprise at the question. It was blunt and to the point, but it was also very personal. He blushed slightly. He normally would have shrugged non-committedly and said nothing. After a moment, he said "Once or twice." and left it at that. "Look at how she snuggles against you." Sonya said to him, which only deepened his blush

Elendrial's curiosity grew at his response. Shadowen brushed against Elendrial's mind and made a gurgling noise. He showed a picture of Vedrit, a very handsome picture, and then a picture of white flowers. Elendrial smiled at him and rubbed his head.
You like him to don't you?
Shadowen made the gurgling noise once again.
"Vedrit. Are you in love now?"
She felt weird asking these questions but she had to know. If she had feelings she didn't understand about him, she needed to know if he had those feelings for another.

He was silent and dismounted, avoiding the question. "We're safe here." he said in a hushed voice as he cleared an area for a fire.
"Why is she so forward?" he asked Sonya moving stones to make a ring and started arranging sticks and leaves for a quick light. He would never admit it openly, even to himself, the feelings for her that wanted to be let out. "Do not be rude." Sonya chided him, though she knew he would never say the words "Yes. With you.", and it wasn't her place say them for him.

Elendrial grew silent and her smile faded. She looked around at the place around them. He said it was safe here and she believed him. Slowly she slid down from the horse and moved toward Vedrit.
"I'm sorry if I was so up front."
She turned to walk away.
