Full Name: Lanaerya
Other Name: Lany
Race: Changeling
Side: Unaware of War
Birthplace: Dras abr Vanyali
Age: 114 Years
Gender: Female
Birthday: February 20
Eyes: Red
Hair: Brown
Weight: 175 lbs.
Height: 6' 3"
Magic User:
As the daughter of a magic user, it came as no great surprise when Lany showed signs of being able to use magic at a young age. She was not able to cast a proper spell until she spent a few years of her early life dedicated to studying the ancient language and how it affected magic in depth. When she did cast her first spell, her eyes became the bright rosy red color of her magic.
Preferred Weapon(s):
Lany carries a seven foot long stone spear that has been polished and strengthened by magic, although she mostly uses it for fishing. The young changeling knows how to defend herself with it, preferring to use it as a sort of bludgeoning and stabbing device instead of throwing it and risk not being able to retrieve it. As a backup weapon and a tool, Lany keeps a six inch dagger made from the fang of a large sea creature. If she can avoid it, Lany will not use her magic as a weapon.
Appearance:
Lany is just a little under the average size for a female changeling of her age. She measures six feet and three inches tall from the tips of her forehooves to the top of her head. Thanks to her large lower half, she weighs in at a hefty one hundred and seventy five pounds on an empty stomach. Like all changelings, Lany's torso and upwards is very fair and elven, with all their elegance and ferocity. Everything else, however, is that of a gorgeous little doe.
Lany’s human skin is pale, and often sports a faint pinkish blush. Her fur is a pale brown color, while Lany's underbelly is a shade of light cream. The shoulder-length hair on her head is a little darker than her fur, and always slightly messy. Her long bangs often fall into her eyes. The tip of her tail and each of her cloven hooves are the same dark chocolate color. While Lany was born with eyes the same brown as her eyes, they have since changed to the rosy red color of her magic.
Lany wears a thick, long-sleeved, dark grey tunic which keeps her perfectly warm throughout most of the year. If the cold of winter becomes too biting, she will often just throw blankets around herself. When she is on one of her many adventures, she wears dark brown leather saddlebags, hung over her back and strapped tightly around her chest and belly, to keep her few important possessions in. She carries her spear as a walking stick and has her dagger at her side, hidden under the hem of her tunic.
Personality:
Lany is curious and hungers for knowledge and experience more than anything else. Her very heart thirsts for adventure, but more than that, freedom. Growing up in a small city on a small island has starved her soul of the excitement it so desires. When she was much younger, she was satisfied with only the stories that her father would tell her, but has since developed a much stronger need that pulls at her heart. It pulls her to the shore of her island, where she sometimes thinks she can see the distant beach of another land. She always starts out of her stupor with her hooves in the freezing saltwater, her eyes dry and stinging.
Her mother was her only constant source of strength for much of her life. Lany loves her mother for it, and does whatever she can to repay Kirshaen for that feat, but she knows it is an ultimately fruitless effort. She will never be able to give to Kirshaen what she gave to Lany. That's alright, though, because Kirshaen would never ask anything like that from her. She is a proud woman who passed that pride down to Lany. Garreth, on the other hand, Lany loves for entirely different reasons. She admires his physical strength, confidence in his decisions, and determination to take whatever he wants for himself. Lany is very much like her father in these regards, as she had worked to emulate them since she was a small child.
Even though she would give anything for her family and few friends to be happy and safe, Lany’s generosity does not extend to those that she does not deem worthy of such high esteem. That is to say, pretty much everyone else is out of luck as far as Lany is concerned. Yes, she is perfectly kind and respectful, but she simply doesn’t see why it has to be partly her responsibility to care for the entire city. She would much rather just use her magical power to keep her and her family watered and fed instead of wasting her energy on others. This is probably due mostly to her independant, prideful nature.
Because of her selfishness, Lany does not have many friends around her own age. Sure, her classmates are friendly enough towards her, but they are not her friends. There’s no way she could ever count on them to do anything for her, not that she ever would. She is not particularly close to anyone besides her mother, father, mentor, and little brother. This has caused her to become an introvert by habit rather than by choice. If someone were to catch her interest and hold decent conversation, she might not mind the company too terribly much. It’s just that the incessant, meaningless chatter that normally accompanies talks with other changelings irks Lany to no end.
--->Likes: Lany loves her family dearly. She enjoys fishing with her spear on the beach, mostly because she really likes to eat what she catches. Most of all, Lany loves to explore and learn new things through experience.
--->Dislikes: Although she practically lives on a block of ice, Lany dislikes the cold greatly and bundles up as warmly as possible. Being in confined spaces for too long also bothers Lany enough to send her into panics.
--->Strengths: Lany is a good magic user for her age. She is not particularly powerful, but she is quite cunning with her words and can strategize well. She is small, light-footed, strong, and quick with both her spear and her dagger. She draws strength from the love she feels for her family.
--->Weakness: She is rather self-centered when it comes to changelings outside of her immediate family and few close friends. Her laziness affects her social life more than anything, as she was forced into isolation for not wanting to work. Lany's selfishness could be her absolute ruin.
Family:
Father: Garrench, Age 561
Mother: Kirshaen, Age 272
Brother: Tobinley, Age 24
History:
Lany was born in Dras abr Vanyali towards the end of a particularly fearsome winter. As a newborn she nearly died, along with many other fawns born around that time, but she was strong enough to power through. Lany, after all, was sired by one of the strongest bucks in the city, Garrench, who did not possess any magical abilities despite being the son of two very powerful magicians. Garrench never wanted to settle down, preferring to travel and leave the city for years at a time. It was no hardship on Lany’s mother, Kirshaen, who was more than capable of raising Lany on her own. Kirshaen was quite an adept magician, accounting for Lany’s own magical prowess.
Lany first started showing signs of magical ability when she was twelve years old and was sent to be trained in the ways of the Ancient Language and magic by the older magicians in the city. She was primarily mentored by Vearadi, who was a childhood friend of Kirshaen. Lany’s mother also helped greatly with her education in magic, but as her mother, it was Kirshaen’s first responsibility to teach Lany the more basic and fundamental aspects of changeling life and culture. The young changeling performed her first magical spell when she was thirty years old, under the watchful eyes of Vearadi. Lany's eyes became a gentle shade of soft rosy red, and gained a faint glow of power. She was released from training at fifty-seven years old, as Vearadi decided that Lany could be trusted to use magic wisely on her own.
Since her graduation from magical education, Lany has found great happiness in taking after her father as an adventurous spirit. Usually, a capable magic user such as herself would be told to stay and help manage the city or train the younger magicians, but Lany was spared when she announced that she would be going to Dras abr Draumar, the capital city, to help there. She did actually travel there, and met many other changelings. Lany used her magic with the local magicians to help the city with its necessary tasks for a few months before traveling back home. Honestly, that in itself wasn't much of an adventure, since the island on which the three cities are located, Ristvak abr Wyrda, is very small and the cities themselves are very close together. Her father, when he takes the time to visit Lany, always fills her head with tales of beautiful sceneries, exciting cities, and strange creatures. She dreams of visiting the lands beyond Ristvak abr Wyrda one day, perhaps with her father in his small wooden ship.
Staying in Dras abr Vanyali for too long and not taking on an apprentice or doing some other job might make it seem to the elders that Lany was avoiding her responsibilities - which she was. Having no intention of traveling to Dras abr Osthato Vinr, Lany simply decided to wait for her father to return to the city so that she could take her place at his side and travel the world with him. In the mean time, Lany decided it would to set up her new home away from the city. She used magic to cut the ice into small blocks that she could work with manually. It was a few weeks of hard work later that Lany had a tiny single-room hut of her own with a pile of woolen blankets for a bed and a fireplace where magical flames burned. Although Lany was trying to avoid running into any elders in case they tried to guilt her into working, she still made the time to visit her mother in the city a few times a week. During this time, Kirshaen fell pregnant by some buck that Lany had only met in passing. The man, Avin'ul, immediately moved into Kirshaen's home to care for her while she carried his child. Lany was relatively indifferent towards Avin'ul, who seemed nice enough but was a little stupid. She wanted her new sibling to take after her mother, obviously. Lany was really excited about becoming a big sister, since most changeling women only have one child in their lifetime.
Many months later, Kirshaen gave birth to a healthy little boy, Tobinley, which caused the entire city to go insane with joy and throw a feast in the newborn's honor. Of course, as Tobinley's sister, Lany attended the feast. She stayed at the outskirts of the action so that she would not be noticed by anyone important, but that also meant that she was too far away from the refreshments to snatch any. A few changelings stopped to talk to her when they saw her, but none took up too much of her time. She even managed to convince a few of them to fetch her some food and drink, feigning fatigue. Dras abr Vanyali's Countess, Kirshaen, and Avin'ul were at the head table, Tobinley laying on folded legs between his parents, his huge brown eyes curious and a little overwhelmed. Lany had helped her mother with the labor and loved little Tobinley from the moment she saw him, still disgustingly slick from his birth and screaming his displeasure at the cold and the light for all to hear. The changeling was having trouble looking away from the fawn, even though her body had already turned to head back to her lonely little hut. Eventually she managed to tear herself away from the happy scene, not feeling that she was ever really a part of it.
A couple decades later, Lany had almost given up hope that her father would come back. It wasn’t terribly difficult to think that he had died while abroad, although the thought itself made Lany a bit morose when it crossed her mind. Tobinley was the light of Lany’s life even at her lowest. The boy had grown like a weed and was now about half Lany’s height. He was sweet and loving, always happy and laughing infectiously. As a little magic user, he would cause trouble unintentionally, but made up for it in his own adorable way. Lany acted as his second mother, watching him grow and helping him flourish under the protective gazes of both herself and her mother. On the morning Garrench’s ship was seen anchored a little ways from the shore, a tiny wooden lifeboat slowly making its way to the beach, Lany galloped there as quickly as she could. She met Garrench on the sandy shore in a tight embrace, her long legs bucking around and her tail wagging happily. She asked him if she could come with him on his next excursion, and he agreed. They left a few days later, after Garrench checked up on Kirshaen, met little Tobinley, and everyone said their goodbyes.
First they sailed across the sea, and then anchored and paddled onto the mainland, which, at that latitude, was just as icy as her island. She felt the most at peace she had ever been, though, even as the chill settled over her. It was just so much bigger than she could have ever imagined. Still, she wanted to see all of it. In her heart, she vowed she would.
