The land was his best friend, or more of the animals who roamed the land were, as the man constantly wandered over every piece of Alagaesia looking for something to comfort him. He was young but not a child anymore, already getting muscular and showing that he had a temper at times, yet the man had a kind soul as well and avoided fights as much as possible. His only problem was when he did get angry or scared, or when he turned into a giant bear that mirrored the one constantly following him in his travels.
This was a warg, a creature born of myth who could bond with one animal and then turn into that animal at will, yet he was only the second known one to be discovered. And he hadn't been discovered by anyone who lived because everyone tried to kill Saen. Saen was now at a lake, blue as the sky and calm as the wind on a still day, while his eyes scanned over the surface looking for any sign of life aside from him and the bear behind him. No one is going to follow you and if they do then we will deal with them, Saen. A deep basso voice filled Saen's head and he simply nodded, foregoing all forms of communication that required he utter any words. Words had power and power killed people which he despised doing.

The dull pitter patter of tiny feet against sand and dirt alike was the only sound that pierced the quietness of early morn. The hooded figure, her face hidden beneath a dark veil, ventured down the footpath to the lake, a mere ten minute walk from the Varden's camp. Elva was cloaked in a robe of grey, barefoot as to allow the earth to squeeze between her toes, a feeling which she found pleasurable. A bird sand hello to the girl as she passed its tree, to which she replied with a curl of her lip.
Elva's large violet eyes flashed as she rounded a bend. The sung hung low over the horizon, behind the great body of water, all but blinding the child. Annoyed, she raised an arm to shield her eyes, keeping it there for a minute or so until the trees near the lake were large enough to filter the sunlight. She dropped her arm and began her way to her favorite ancient oak, the branches of which curved out over the water and overlooked the glass-like surface. Before she could clamber up the side of the tree, Elva sensed a tickling in the back of her mind and accompanying that, the feeling that she was not alone.
Honing in on the consciousness of the other being, the girl concluded that it was, in fact, a sentient being. She could sense its fear, its hatred, its pain. Casting her eyes about, she located the being and its surprising companion. Undeterred, she quietly made her way to where the beast and his supposed master and, without a second glance at either of them, plopped herself down on her bottom next to the pair. "You seem like an interesting person."

The first sound that alerted Saen Gilios to the approaching girl was Gastrel letting loose a low rumbling growl deep in his chest. That brought the 18 year old man to full attention and immediately he dropped his hand to Anduril in an instinctual motion, hoping it wouldn't come to a fight. Yet when he saw through his blonde bangs the dark haired little girl walking toward him and then sitting down next to him even though they were obviously not always able to be friendly, that stopped Saen in his tracks. With a shake of his head, the man released the hilt of Anduril and felt the heavy blade thump down into the sheathe once more.
He rolled his shoulders back which caused the muscles in his arms and torso to bulge and ripple just before Saen sat down next to the girl, motioning for Gastrel to calm and seat himself as well. When the bear did, the warg looked over at the girl and debated whether or not to speak to her since magic was sure to erupt if he got angry. When he finally decided it was an unnecessary risk, the warg simply nodded his head in greeting and motioned to his lips before slashing with the blade of his hand to show he didn't speak very often.
Still she was right when assuming that he was an interesting person and he could feel something off about her compared to others he had come across. Saen was shocked by this girl who showed no fear in the face of someone so dangerous and deadly. Unconciously he began to write in the dust a simple line of characters. I'm Saen and this is Gastrel. For safety reasons, I won't speak aloud to you or anyone else since there are many things it could do to those around me. Please understand that.

Elva stared out over the lake, her brilliant eyes calm as the glassy blue. She listened to the scratching of something being etched into the earth and the breath of the massive beast for a moment, her face blank, before tilting her head downwards in the direction of the runes. A second passed. Then two, then ten. After about half a minute, she raised her chin once more. "I can't read. But you've nothing to be afraid of." If only that was true. The small child sighed and pulled her knees to the chest, resting her head in her hands. Elva sensed the uncertainty of the young man's speech with her cursed blessing. "Words can be dangerous, binding, even. But we could find a way around that, of that I am sure."
Confusion set in as she took note of the man's fears and doubts once more, a silent process that she went through during most of her conversations, save for those involving Nasuada and Angela. Then, an idea. Her face devoid of emotion, Elva leaned back, sarcasm flowing from her tongue as she beheld the massive, shaggy animal. Unlike the man, in this moment, she had no fear. "What a lovely pet you are.".
(Not a terribly amazing post, but I'm still trying to get into character. I thought it would be fun to try and provoke Saen into getting angry.)

Gastrel growled deep in his chest, a dull rumble coming forth like the presence of many horses galloping toward war, while he stared at the little girl. She spoke with insolence in her tone and no emotion of her face but the bear knew he could take her without any hesitation or effort. Such a young whelp like this one should not be angering an older being like he himself was to her and for that he would make sure she understood her error. Just as he began to get up from his sitting position though, a soothing hand was placed on the bear's flanks and he calmed instantly.
Only one person, living or dead, could calm the animal when he got so close to violence and that was the eighteen year old boy that sat next to him. Saen could hear all of her words so if he wasn't angered by them then neither should he be at her massive superiority complex. So Gastrel stayed sitting, casting a withering look toward the girl who deemed herself more important than he. This would not stay like this long if Saen were to leave for any reason and she mouthed off one more time without him present.
Gastrel is not a pet and that much needs to be known right now, girl. There are few creatures you should be afraid of more than dragons but a bear when fully grown is one of them, especially when you try to upset them. Now as I said before, my name is Saen Gilios and this is Gastrel. We roam the lands looking for a place where we fit in since there is much pain that follows us in our wake. If you would not mind then do not anger me for I am worse than my friend and I cannot be calmed by him if he is already irked by your tone.

Elva shifted her gaze to the side as she felt the bear's anger increase to a fury that could have rivaled Glaedr's. It worked, she thought smugly. A smile on her face, she watched the man's hand touch his companion, and felt the bear's anger subside. Though the pairing was odd, the almost instantaneous reaction spoke volumes. The two were incredibly close - bonded, it seemed. Almost like a dragon and its rider. A strange chill came over her, like a rush of icy water running through her body, from the tips of her fingers to the tips of her toes. The feeling was familiar. It was similar to when Saphira had marked her forehead with the silvery sheen she now possessed. She raised a hand to the fabric of the veil that covered her forehead, as she oft did when something troubled her
I need to find out more.
Despite the possibility of her small frame being crushed flat beneath the beast's mass or torn to shreds by his sharp teeth, the girl was unafraid. Once his anger began to hint at violence, it would only take a handful of words to subdue the creature and his humanoid master. Looking once again at the bear, she continued."Ah. It speaks. Does the teddy talk as well?" She was well aware of the dangerous game she was playing, but her curiosity at the pairing urged her to continue, to push the two beyond their limits. There was no stopping her now.

Saen was being calm before but now it was too much for him to handle, being talked to like a child and then having Gastrel insulted in front of him. Hey he had warned the girl in advance so that wasn't the problem. With a roar that started from a human throat and ended by far more animalistic, Saen changed. He was no longer the young man that had stood there before but now was a full grown bear mirroring in appearance Gastrel. Two bears were there and that was bad news for the little girl.
A simple toss of his head showed that Saen had lost his human inhibitions and gained animalistic fury to rival any beast in existence. Claws that were as dark as night slashed the air and then another pair joined those when Gastrel moved close. Now was the time for a fight and not the time for peaceful talking that Saen had tried before.

Be prepared, Elva warned herself as anger flared in the bear and his supposed Master. She ensured that the words she needed were on her tongue and would have the correct effect once they poured from her mouth like venom. No matter how dire the situation seemed, she was stronger than them. But, as the man changed into a bear nearly impossible to tell apart from his companion, she hesitated. Maybe she'd gone too far. Either way, now that she'd learned what the man was capable of, there was no need to thoughtlessly provoke him. She used her ability subtly, attempting to calm them down and possibly get some answers but didn't delve into their consciousnesses as she was capable of doing.
"Come, now," she said, remaining seated. "Would you really fight an innocent child? A great big bear like you?" Elva folded her arms on her chest and tutted, shifting to the side as to get a better view of the pair, narrowing her eyes. She flipped her hood down in one smooth motion, hoping that the mark on her forehead and her strange eye color would be enough to deter the two from doing anything foolish. If they made a move her curse would be her only option. "I'd rather not hurt either of you. Now, tell me, what are you? The only other animal I've ever seen change into another beast is a werecat, though-" She looked up at their hairy faces. "You certainly aren't feline. Were-bear, perhaps?"

Saen stopped and looked quizzically at the girl for a second, his human instincts returning long enough for him to turn back into his human form. As he returned to two legs, the man brushed his clothes off and thought carefully before finally speaking. I'm not exactly sure what I am but Gastrel and I are bonded much like what I hear a dragon and rider are. There is one other case of what I am that I heard of, a snow leopard pair, and they both went to the Varden according to the tales. I'm certain that the warg is like me and that would make me a warg as well.
Saen glanced around and then looked at the mark with interest while he thought about what all he had heard of. There was a girl who had been blessed by Eragon Shadeslayer back when he joined the Varden and she had soon after disappeared from stories. Now here he was staring at a girl who looked older but had a mark similar to what Saphira had given this baby and she was staring at him with defiance and no fear. Maybe this was that same girl and he was staring at someone who could control him in an absolute need to fight. This was beyond what he was used to in his travels and that scared Saen.

After watching, with interest, as the boy quickly resumed his two-legged form, Elva allowed her eyes to wander aimlessly for a handful of moments as she considered the boy - Saen's - response. "You are bonded," she said finally, her tongue forming the words with relish. Although she was very young by human standards, she was at the point of maturity where she yearned for a bond - or a friend - of her own. "I have never heard of a Warg before. You must be almost as rare as myself." Elva spoke without false pride, for she was certain that she was special. She couldn't be explained with a simple word. Unlike the Warg, there was no name or title for her kind.
Her next words came after another minute of silence. With a deft hand, she flicked down her hood and removed her veil and blinked her amethyst eyes twice before turning to face Saen. "As you exposed yourself to me, it is only fitting that I do the same." A timely breeze touched her face, and the cold on her forehead told Elva that the shining mark given to her by Saphira was plain to see. "Blessed by a dragon, and cursed by her rider."
