Velathan grinned as David's dragon stood up and placed his legs on David's chest. He watched as Auran edged closer the stranger, had a cautious sniff of him and then retreated to the safety of between Velathan's legs, where he sat protectively. After Brenton had spoken to them in the ancient language, which his dragon seemed to understand, but Velathan barely understood any of it, he adopted a more relaxed position, laying lazily on the floor next to Velathan, humming as Velathan scratched behind his ears. "Indeed. I would like to know as well." he said as David asked how the dragons were growing.

Brenton watched as the black dragon put his legs up on David's chest, examining the mark on the dragon's back with interest as well as the size and build of the body and legs. Such a fine dragon would grow into a wonderful being to rule the skies or in another situation, a great partner to spend the days with and battle long hard fights with. It was intriguing that both dragons may not have known what Brenton said but instantly calmed down, yet Brenton could tell that the only one who knew what he said was David.
So he turned to Velathan and smiled slightly. I told them I was a friend and a rider, that I meant them no harm to them or to you, that they were safe, as well as some other things before finally giving the traditional greeting. It was all in the Ancient Language because that is one language that cannot be lied in, although you can say one word and mean another. Such as if I said brisingr, which means fire, and meant for the spell to light the path before me in a blaze as bright as fire. It is complicated to say that way but much easier with one word. Although this time I spoke truthfully and used words that meant exactly what I said.
Brenton examined Auran for a second, seeing the dragon was smaller but just as brave, even standing next to Velathan for a second in a guarding position. That dragon wasn't one to be messed with but not as stocky as the black dragon was. Auran would grow into someone who was determined and brave, never backing down until given a reason to trust the situation. That was a good combination for a friend as well as a guard but not necessarily as for a long drawn out fighter.
Your dragon, David, will grow large and already has the signs of being a strong fighter just in his legs and body. His wings are a little to big for his body and his legs far out weigh his torso in size but that will change when he grows bigger. He has a personality that will give him a reputation not to be messed with as well as someone that you can honestly say is a good ally. As for Auran. Auran is smaller but leaner and has the build of a dragon that could go faster in the air. He doesn't look to be able to fight for long drawn out periods but is brave and determined all the same. Auran will stay by your side and even with a size disadvantage, could do serious harm to someone bigger because he can fly faster and outmaneuver them in a heartbeat. Not to say that your dragon won't grow to make my prediction wrong but that is what it looks like now.

David smiled down at his dragon, who was humming with approval. He then said "Well, I think he approves your prediction. As do I. I look forward to the day he lives out your prediction. As does he. It is one mighty one indeed" David always knew his dragon would be one whom most would think twice about attacking, due to his black color, but to have this confirmed by one who knew dragons as well as Brenton, well it was very reassuring to say the least. he then turned to Velathan and said "I have a feeling we will make quiet the pair. Speed and strength combined is not something that should be reckoned with.." He then nodded at Brenton and said "Thank you, for those assessments. I think the dragons feel better about themselves already." He resumed petting his dragon.

Velathan nodded in approval at Brenton's assessment. He assumed that Auran would end up being just as strong as any other dragon, but having speed would be a huge advantage over slower, more cumbersome dragons. His dragon gave a hum of approval as he listened. Velathan listened to David as he spoke and then put in "I agree. We should be quite a pair. Although, it won't always be both of us, I imagine. Especially once we complete our training and are sent on missions of our own. Apart from that though, definitely a force not to be trifled with."

Brenton heard the two younger riders speaking of being a great pair in battle and he could already tell they were good friends. It made him remember all of those people that Brenton had ever befriended and been able to fight by their side. Konner was the main rider to still be around constantly and he was a great ally in battle. Brenton would never give up being able to call him a friend. Then came Isrydia who rarely fought, yet when she did it was a sight to see. The female rider was one of those people who his relationship had been rocky with until they got to know each other better. After that was Feanaro, his greatest pupil and the one who taught Brenton many things in the training grounds when they made them together. Emiryal, well he wasn't always around but Brenton was still sure they were friends. If not then the elf would never listen to the former king's advice.
Now there were these two who came along and Brenton could tell that they were growing on him. Velathan was silent for the most part, observing and never letting anything escape his notice, while David was more outgoing and spoke of the great feats they would accomplish. They were both so young and their dragons were just out of the egg compared to ones such as Istven. Still, Brenton liked conversing with them and trying to lead them in the right direction for the most part.
If you wish, a trip to Ellesmera sometime will give you the chance to test what you learn in a combat training field. It tests you skills in not only weapons but also dragons and magic. The field is littered with traps such as pitfalls, poison arrows, guillotines, swinging axes, hidden toxic gasses, and walls that will grow from the trees and create a labyrinth. The trees will separate for anyone who is a worthy rider and friend of the elves as well as their dragons. It's a great place to go and see what you need to work on.
Brenton looked at the window and thought about the forest for a few seconds before he spoke again. Heed my warning, Shurtugals. Pride comes before the fall. You both show promise but you are also showing that you look too far into the future and see yourselves as legends worthy of the bards. It is this pride that gave Galbatorix the fuel for his anger that soon started the Rider War. Don't ever let your guard down and when you think that things are going your way, remember that things can always turn against you...and they most likely will.

David nodded silently. He knew there was quite a chance after training that it would be rare Velathan and him would be sent off on any missions together..especially since the riders were still few in number, and they would be spread to thin to pair up much. All David could hope was Velathan and him prove themselves enough in training so that Eragon and the older riders would pair them up as often as possible.
When Brenton suggested they went to the elven city of Ellsmera to train and detirmine their weaknesses, David sighed wistfully "As much as I would like to go to that marvelous city, I doubt we will go for many years at least. After this mission for the Varden, we are to begin our training..and I doubt we will be allowed to train there yet. In a few years maybe..but not any time soon."
His pride was slightly wounded when he compared them basically to Galbatorix, but he kept his composure and said softly "Begging your pardon, but I shall not let the hopes for glory turn me evil. I am not deluded, I know I will most likely just be 'another rider' in the future. It does not mean I can't still hope to be a good one."

(Sorry for being so late, it slipped my mind.)
Velathan grinned at the thought of visiting Ellesmera. He'd always wanted to visit there, wondering what the Elves were like, how they lived and what they did behind the wall of wards in the deep forest. He also thought that testing out the training field would be an excellent eye-opener to the extent of his own, and Auran's abilities as fighters. Seeing Elves fight had made him even him, a brilliant swordsman by human standards, look on in awe as they spun their weapons almost faster than they could see. This excitement, however, turned to annoyance as he felt he was being compared to Galbatorix. "I would never do anything on the levels of Galbatorix. Besides, is there anything wrong with aspiring to be the best that you can?"

Brenton shook his head sadly and thought to the days when he had wanted to grow up and be the best knight ever. It was for noble cause, to help provide food for his mother, but it also led to him being captured by the Empire. Years had passed of him being a knight worthy of praise before that day but the knight had still fallen. And yes it brought him to the Warden and all of the people he met but it still had been a bad situation from a noble thought.
Aspiring to be a good rider is great, in theory, but some cynics and skeptics believe that even the noblest of causes can have ill effects. Many people have traversed that path, myself included, but Galbatorix is the most well known. Please don't think I am saying the two of you will end up like him. It was an example. If you wish to be more than mediocre then might I suggest you search out Eragon Shadeslayer for experiencing of rising up from humble roots, Konner Derriksson for words about how to stay hidden if stealth is your best approach, Emiryal Nyteshaed because he knows what it's like to want something and have it ripped from you. Lastly go to Isrydia for any academic knowledge you may need.

David was tempted to Snort, instead he did the more respectful way of snorting, he sighed "Alas, I doubt Myself or Velathan are important enough to even approach Eragon Shadeslayer for tutelage. I do not know these other people.. Riders I assume. But if they are names worthy to be mentioned, I doubt that we are important enough to be of any interest to them. Velathan and I are simple warriors. While it may be true my grandfather was a Rider..and my father an important memeber of the Du Vrangr Gata, I still believe I am not important enough for such important people." David said, a little sadly. Zeus huffed, and David sensed improvement from the black dragon, but he ignored it.

(Well, we have to finish this, right?)
Velathan glanced at David as he spoke. He didn't exactly agree with David's words about importance, after all, they were no longer simple warriors, but among the first of a new generation of dragon riders. He could, however, see where he was coming from. "But, surely as some of the newest Dragon Riders, we can't be that unimportant? We're not the foot soldiers that we once were anymore, we're part of something much bigger, and no less important that any of the other riders. Although, I suppose we'll find out once we report back to Uru'baen... Illirea now, I suppose, for training."

I'm one of the important riders you speak of and yet you are worth my time to train. Trust me, my friends will be willing to help you if they have the time and I may even send them a message to ask them myself. Besides, Eragon was a farm raised nobody who was trained by Broom and then Oromis. Brom created the Varden and systematically wiped out the Forsworn. Oromis was an elder on the original council and a friend of Vrael. They are two of the most important riders ever and yet they helped someone new.
Brenton liked how Velathan stepped in to let David know they were important enough for training. Of course, with Eragon, they may have to wait for schedules to match.

(BROOM OMG I LAUGHED SO HARD AT THAT)
Both Velathan and Brenton had a point "You both have a point. We are no longer just mere footsoliders. As we are now the youngest of now a small order. We will both grow to be some of the highest ranking of this Order, as few remain and in the coming years we will yet again grow. The only problem with your statement is that Eragon was one of the only hopes the Varden had, some would argue the only hope, that would make him very important. The Riders may yet have work to be done, but our battle has been won.." The young Rider felt it was best to at least point out he had some truth in his statement earlier.
David gently petted his dragon, imagining the day when they would fly out and keep the peace amongst the people of Alagaesia.

"It is true that, up until the next rider showed up, Eragon was almost the sole hope for the future of the Varden. I still disagree that it makes us less important, but I suppose it doesn't really matter. After all, it is what it is. I'm sure that they'll be more than happy to provide proper Rider training for us either way. As it stands, I am grateful for your offer to train us." Velathan said, directing the last part to Brenton. He was excited to being his training properly, but he suspected it would take a while to travel back to the capital, and there was plenty of time for training between now and then.

He was the sole hope only because the rest of the riders were never noticed and so they stayed neutral. If Eragon had not been led to the Varden then he too would not be as important. Besides, everyone writes their own stories in the history books. It's up to you two on whether or not you'll be important like the entire Bromsson family, whether blood or adoptive.
Brenton looked at Auran the black dragon with mild interest. Two dragons who were both so brave and yet so different in appearance. They reminded him alot of Grazael and Arlyn at that age. Arlyn had been the small fast dragon who, despite his strength of heart, never grew fast while Grazael was the powerhouse and grew much faster, even though he was younger. It made the knight smile as he remembered the time that the shade attacked.
Isrydia had just agreed to go with him to Du Weldenvarden to train and so they were on the road. Night had fallen so Brenton and the ground set up camp and Arlyn began playing with Grazael. It didn't happen right away but eventually Brenton noticed his guards were nervous and so he checked it out. It had been a shade who followed them. Well, of course, he threw Isrydia onto a horse with Arlyn and told her to run.
The fight proceeded but the shade ran after Isrydia which made Brenton chase it down. He didn't get there quick enough because it had hurt Arlyn which stunted the young dragon's growth. Still that had only strengthened the bond between Arlyn and Grazael. He'd even let the blue dragon know they were alive when Brenton fought Nelfarion and Ashendale.
Now two dragons displayed much the same friendship and it made his heart warm to see it. You and Isrydia fighting keeps me from talking to my brother you know. So when you can apologize to her and try to work it out but don't leave a friendship in ruins like this.

David nodded at both of them. "As am I Brenton. As I stated earlier, I have been attempting to teach him magic. It has been slow, and I am not much of a teacher.. not yet anyways. I am sure the day will come when people come to fear and admire David Lightninsword and Velathan. With you teaching us Brenton, that day may come sooner." He offered him a small smile as he turned his attention back to his Dragon.. his bond mate.. the partner of his heart and mind. The Black dragon puffed, a little smoke coming out of his nose. David chuckled and patted his head.
He then looked up again "We leave tomorrow to continue on our mission for the Varden.. if you wish to, would you do us the honor of accompanying us. Brom trained Eragon on the road.. so I see it only fitting that his son should teach us on the road as well."
