Natala was born on June 20th in Therinsford. Soon after she turned 2, her family moved to a small farm along the edge of the Spine. Nat had an older brother, Kade, who she looked up to very much. He taught her how to use a bow and how to ride horses. When she was 7, her parents gave her her first sword. Her brother taught her how to use it and they always had mock battles.
At the age of 13, Natala received a colt for her birthday. She named him Shale, for his Grey coloring. A few days after her birthday, disaster struck. Nat's family was ambushed by the Empire. Her parents revealed to her that they had been part of the Empire before they betrayed the King and fled. Galbatorix had been tracking Natala's family for 10 years. The troops then executed her parents and Kade and Nat fled. They made it to Carvahall unharmed, but walked right into a trap. Some fo the troops were waiting among the Spine. When they were surrounded, Kade revealed himself to be the leader of the ambush. He had caused their parents death because the King had promised him a spot in the army as a General.
Natala then battled her brother, but they were very well matched because he knew all her moves and she knew all of his. Finally, Kade pinned her on the ground and was about to kill her when she cut off his arm. He jumped away and she took the opportunity to jump on Shale and escape. She got a way with an injured shoulder and a scar on her arm. Natala fled to the Varden, hoping for refuge from her past. When she got there, the Varden was reluctant to accept her because of her family history. She convinced them but lived there silently, not making any friends.
