Murtagh stood with his back to the outer wall of Belatona. It was just a little after sunset. Zar'oc was in his hand and gleamed red in the dull light. He looked up as a Varden dragon passed over head, presumably to patrol the Varden's encampment. It had been difficult to get this far unseen. Belatona was relatively in an open area, though that had been the Empire's doing that had made it so to increase the defensibility of Belatona. The Varden seemed to be taking it a step further and had dug trenches with spikes imbedded in them.
He glanced towards the small embankment he new his men to be hidden behind. Among them were both warriors and spell casters. He had hand picked each one of them when Galbatorix had ordered him to return to Belatona and do reconnaissance and possibly capture. It seemed that most missions Galbatorix gave him included capture. Though most of the time the order to capture meant him and Thorn facing Eragon and Saphira. Surely his half brother and his dragon were here but he wouldn't be facing them this time.
He had placed a spell on those he had chosen to complete the mission, to hide them from Varden eyes and silence their movement. Thorn, start the distraction we will go inside once you have their attention, he said.
Thorn was on the North side of Belatona where he and the others would act as a diversion while Murtagh and his men entered Belatona from the east end. Be careful, Thorn replied. His concern for Murtagh was mirrored by Murtagh's own concern for Thorn. Not very often did they fight without the other by their side.
Thorn's roar echoed across the city to them.
-----------------
Thorn rose into the sky with powerful beats of his wings. A phantom image of Murtagh was in his saddle. If Murtagh did not appear to be with Thorn the Varden might grow suspicious. The Eldunari Thorn had with him maintained the illusion as well as the wards Murtagh had placed on him.
He roared in defiance at the city of Belatona. Somewhere within the city someone screamed. And it wasn't long before an alarm was sounded. He glided towards the city. He flew by a chapel and tore off the ceiling with a single blow. Then he turned to unleash an inferno of flames upon the soldiers who had been patrolling on the wall. One of them jumped off the wall screaming as he burned.
Firern followed in close range to Thorn in a tight formation. Thorn was much bigger than he was so he did not attempt to destroy any roofs as he would have to break formation to do so. He also unleashed his flames upon those in the streets below.
Emiryal sat in his saddle. The elf had his bow Manin in hand. In a rapid motion Emiryal sent a small volley of arrows at the soldiers on the wall who had survived Thorn's fire.
-----------------
Murtagh waited until the alarm had sounded then motioned with Zar'oc for his men to join him at the base of the wall. He glanced at the wall and then quietly said, Moi stenr! The stone wall before him responded by appearing to melt away until a small tunnel had appeared. It would let them right into the city without the Varden knowing. The effort of the spell didn't appear to have phased Murtagh in the slightest.
It was nearly invisible in the darkness but behind Murtagh was a small pin point that marked the location of the Eldunari he had brought with him. He often drew on their strength when using magic. He had used none of his own energy to manipulate the stone wall, which was now an arching tunnel.
He lead the way through the wall and waited just inside the city for his men to join him.

Hetrand ran through the streets at a breakneck speed, for a human. His weapons, New Leaf, and his armour were delivered before. All that Hetrand had now was his swords, Air and Light, as well as a suit of armour borrowed from the Varden. Zander was just ahead, putting on his armour and swords. Rider, that sword and armour are Rider weapons. Use them well. Good luck. May your blade stay sharp and your wit sharper.
---------
Zander buckled the last of the armour on. His brother's chainmail was on underneath, but there was still the Rider armour. Zander slipped the chainmail hood over his head and put on his Rider helm. The face guard muffled his response so Zander said it directly into the soldier's mind. Thank you, Quickblade. May you make your fellow warriors proud. Glaedan, you just grew. Let's show Murtagh your strength. If you or I dies, the other one will finish the fight. Glaeran roared in agreement. Let's be off Young one. Zander jumped into the newly made Rider's saddle. Now he would take on the enemy Rider's.
------
Glaeran soared overhead while Zander unleashed arrow after arrow into Murtagh's men, which were visible to a neutral Rider. Screams echoed as Zander amplified his voice. Are you yellow-bellied, Murtagh Morzansson? Too afraid to face me. Yes, I can see you on the ground. Thorn is just a distraction to weed out the soldiers. FACE ME MURTAGH! I am your worst nightmare. Glaeran pulled an evasive maneuver as Zander ended the spell. Arrows flew past Glaeran and into other Empire soldiers.
------------
Hetrand pulled his twin blades. Air and Light flashed evilly and arced out as Hetrand Aaronsson slew many opponents. There were few that actually made Hetrand try. Most were spellcasters that had their attention turned toward a Varden spellcaster. Hetrand slew dozens every minute. Quickblade was named so, for he was an extremely agile and dangerous warrior.
-----------
Glaeran roared again and breathed a stream of fire at the enemy dragons who attempted to attack him. Glaeran's size made it easier for him to evade the magically enhanced dragons who were much larger and cumbersome.
(Glaedran won't be able to breathe fire yet, and won't be able to carry anyone on his back, yet. Sorry.))

Leliah heard the roars of the dragons and rushed out of which building she was inside, She gasped as she saw two enemy dragons flying overhead. She saw the glimmering red Thorn; but behind him, Firern. She saw the neutral rider fly up to defend the city of Belatona. Leliah ran back inside and changed into her battle attire. She now wore her chain mail shirt, thick brown leggings, greaves, her long forest green cloak, her newly made bow; Maelamanin, was slung across her back while her sword was hidden underneath her cloak.
Leliah felt a sense of betrayal as she saw Emiryal and Firern up ahead. She looked around, She saw Zander and Glaeran flying overhead. She looked around – worried for the sake of the witch child – Leliah took the bow off of her shoulder and hid it; in the case of Emiryal looking down and recognizing Maelamanin. She sighed and spoke to Zander. Be careful, You don’t want Thorn on your tail… She then broke contact with the neutral rider. She was worried for the sake of the soldiers and innocent Varden families.
Leliah ran to the great wall, she managed to get up there. She knew she would look shady; A tall slim, hooded and cloaked figure. Her face brightened as she heard what Zander had said to Murtagh; She was safe, the Murtagh riding the dragon was an illusion. Not the real thing. She dared not talk to Emiryal or Firern in the case of them attacking her; not remembering her or her name Leliah Blackwater.
She sighed as she felt the King had outdone himself. She fingered the priceless locket her parents had given her as a baby. I will avenge your deaths, Even if I die. [/i] A grim smile flashed across her face, she knew what she had to do…

Zander continued to fly over the city. When another dragon got close, Glaeran shot a stream of fire at them. Several different time, Zander tried to injure an enemy Rider. Each time, he was met with failure. Finally, Zander stopped trying. Jierda. Zander muttered, this time attacking the weapons belt on a Rider, Emiryal. The leather snapped and fell off his waist. Can you cause a distraction, just long enough for Glaeran and I to get close to Murtagh? Zander inquired of Leliah.
-----------
An arrow grazed Hetrand's left bicep. He swung his sword, Air, up and severed the archer's head from his body. Hetrand danced from soldier to soldier, laying waste to them all with Air and Light.

Murtagh cursed for having been careless with the spell to hide him and his men. It didn't take long for Zander to unleash a small volley of arrows at his men. "Letta orya thorna! !" he shouted. The arrows stopped in mid air and fell to the ground harmlessly. Not one of his men were injured from them. "My worst nighmare. Ha! Far from and I have no need to face you. Be on your way rider before I harm your beast," he said. Then with his men he slipped into an ally way. It was small enough that the Varden dragons could not easily reach them. He amended the spell to hide himself and his men to include everyone who might see them. It might have been too late as Zander would roughly know where they were but it was all he could do. He couldn't fail this mission. If he did he would have to face Galbatorix's wrath for being so careless with his spell.
He continued on toward the main building where he presumed there would be information or someone with information about the Varden's movements, resources and plans.
--------------
Emiryal raised his left palm and sent a bolt of fire at a house with a thatched roof. The building's roof was immediately attacked hungrily by the flames. Firern banked as Emiryal sent more bolts of fire toward buildings. Each in turn began to burn and held promise to engulf the building given enough time.
Emiryal easily caught his belt a motion of inhuman speed just before it fully slid off him. It only took a quick spell to restore the broken leather.
Firern saw the cloaked figure on the wall first. He had orders to capture any who might give them information. And the figure on the wall seemed to not be attacking yet. Emiryal braced himself as Firern readied himself for a difficult aerial feat. As they approached the wall he suddenly turned a hundred and eighty degrees and was upside down. Course he couldn't fly that way but doing so gave Emiryal the chance to grab the cloaked figure. If she were merely a peasant he'd just kill her and they'd try again for someone who would have information.
Firern couldn't wait to see if Emiryal succeeded or not and turned up right to prevent himself from crashing into the wall.
--------------
Thorn roared when Zander shot arrows at Murtagh. He knew his rider was unharmed but he didn't want Zander to pursue him. Murtagh had a mission to fulfill. He flapped his wings and his massive form rose higher into the air before he shot towards Glaeran. He intended to use the shear force of his speed to throw himself at the other dragon and claw at his underbelly.

Glaeran felt a dragon, a large one, coming near him. He flipped over and veered to the side to avoid the attack. Still, Glaeran was hit by Thorn's claws. It wasn't a strong hit but it still sent Glaeran spinning toward the wall. Zander, we need to get out of the city. Thorn will follow if we attack Murtagh again. Find him and then get out of their.
-----------------------
Zander ran toward the general vicinity of Murtagh's hiding place. The only problem was that he didn't know where he was. The alley was the only reasonable option for a hiding area. Jierda. Zander whispered as he destroyed both houses' walls, only enough to crush someone who was in the alley. Zander then ran toward the South Wall with New Leaf ready to fight.
------------------------
Hetrand got hit by a sword blade. His borrowed armour stopped the blade from cutting him but it still bruised him and knocked him off balance.

Leliah’s hood covered her face with a shadow as black as pitch. She turned her head to see Firern and Emiryal approaching faster than ever. The breath rushed out from her lungs as Emiryal caught her around the waist; She let her whole body relax. There was no point in kicking and screaming. She silenced herself both mentally and physically. She concentrated on a metal wall; Impossible to break, just like her Mental Defences. Her mind became a black slate; She only thought about the big, tall, metal wall that stood surrounding her mind.
She closed her eyes and just lay there. She felt as if she should act unconscious, or at least asleep. She breathed in and out through her nose; She smelt the burning of the thatched roofs below her. She suddenly felt as if she were going to fall. But she kept her hood concealing her face; Otherwise she would never know why Emiryal was wreaking havoc on where she now lived.
She opened one eye slowly, she looked at the ground below her and how far up she was. Were she to fall she would die; unless she could displace the air below her to soften the landing. She took in a deep breath and held it; she closed her eye again and pretended to be unconscious.

Emiryal didn't try to attack her mind. He had other matters to worry about, like protecting his own mind from Varden spell casters. Besides he didn't need to worry about getting information from her until they got back to Dras-Leona. From there the useful prisoners would be moved to Uru'baen.
He didn't recognize Leliah and didn't even attempt to identify who he had snatched. Though it seemed that she was unconscious. Had he really done that to her by grabbing her? Or was she trying to fool him. Either way he wouldn't take a chance. He quickly spoke a spell to bind her and prevent her from speaking and calling for help.
Firern rose on steady wings into the sky before he began a dive. He expertly pulled up just in time and snatched one of the Varden's catapult-like devises and smashed it into the outer wall of Belatona.
Thorn could only be encouraged by landing a blow on Glaeran. He had the strength of many Eldunari with him and had no need to fear the smaller dragon. He relentlessly pursued Glaeran and each time he got close enough he would bite or claw at any unprotected portion of Glaeran's form.
Murtagh signaled to his men to halt as Zander appeared. Zander didn't see them due to the spell but he wasn't going to let them give away his position. He quickly cast a spell to divert the rocks away from them as well to create an illusion of the rocks landing where they were standing. The Eldunari helped in the details of the illusion. Otherwise Zander would know where they were.

Glaeran quickly evaded the dragons and then continued toward the Varden. If they needed help, it was only right that they help. He had a vague idea of what Zander was planning and he would help. In their own experiences, life was hard. To have their new home attacked, it wasn't right. Be careful Young One. There are others about, they will surely attack you if they don't know you.
-----------------------
Zander dodged a falling piece of catapult. He cast a simple spell to block most objects from hitting him. It was not a problem to find Murtagh. He would show himself eventually, and when he did, Zander would be ready. Zander jumped over a piece of wall and then continued running. They will not harm someone who is helping them. You should be careful, because Thorn has not left your tail alone. He will eventually harm you. I am of no help to you if he does get to you.

Leliah was a dead weight. She panted as if she were having a fit, But she was not. She felt the dark magic as Emiryal cast the spell apon her. Her hood was still covering her face and hair, For that she was glad. She sighed lightly. Her hair fell in front of her eyes, She didn’t really care as the hood concealed her identity. For now. She felt Firern flapping his membrane wings.
Leliah wished that her Mother’s dragon had spawned an egg that hatched for her, But the amethyst dragon, whose name was Amee, was dead and so was her father’s emerald green beast, named Mirelth. Leliah felt as if once she was done with all the warring that she go and search for Amee and Mirelths’ Elundarí. Even though she hated the warring she had to go on with it for the shelter of the Varden.
She felt a warming sensation in her stomach as she thought about searching for the Elundarí. She knew that that was what she had to do to finally get over her parents’ death. She thought of making sure that they were not in the grasps of Galbatorix or any of his men. Next time they met; Leliah thought of asking Emiryal if she could talk to Carimev about the whereabouts of Amee and Mirelth’s Elundarí.
But at that moment she was ever so slightly unconscious and sleepy. She could not do anything but hide her identity until her hood was thrown back to reveal who she really was. She knew that Emiryal would probably hate her for it though. She could not reveal herself until the last minute. She was bound from speaking so she did not even think to try. She knew it would alert Emiryal as to what she was trying to say. She felt breathless but she took in a big breath and slowly began to work herself back into consciousness. She smiled to herself slyly.
Leliah felt tired and soon dozed off. She had no idea how she could fall asleep in the middle of a breach, But she did. Her eyes fluttered open after a short while of black dreams. She widened her eyes and took a deep breath befre releasing it soon after.

Thorn continued to relentlessly pursue Glaeran. If anything he was trying to be a pest and keep the other dragon busy. He banked hard to follow the smaller dragon and tried to snap at his tail and bite off the end of it as Glaedr had done to him. In fact even now his tail was 3 feet shorter than it should've been. --------------
Murtagh sighed as he watched Zander still trying to find him. The man had called him out when he first saw him. As long as Murtagh remained with his men he endangered the mission because of Zander. He signaled his men to continue. Go, I will catch up when I can. Get in there and find out everything you can and capture anyone who might be able to tell us more of the Varden's movements, he thought to them. He was answered an affirmative from one of the spell casters in the group.
He watched as they hurried deeper into the city. He shifted his grip on Zar'oc before stepping out into the street in front of Zander. Then he let go of the spell that hid him from Zander. His men would still be hidden though, just not him. He had raised the blood red blade of Zar'oc, stood at the ready. He smiled at Zander maliciously. Zander posed no threat t him. Zander was a human and a much younger rider than he was.
Murtagh was experienced and had the aid of Eldunari, plus he was the equal to an elf in speed and strength due to Galbatorix. "You don't stand the slightest chance against me nor does your dragon against Thorn," he said. "Surrender now and I might spare your lives."
-------------
Firern flew over the city continuing to cause havoc. They had caught the Varden unawares. Emiryal continued to send small volley after volley at the soldiers below. However, it soon became obvious they Firern was working to get to the outer city wall. As soon as he got there he landed on the wall. Emiryal had slung his bow across his back and untied the straps on Firern's saddle. He picked up Leliah and jumped off the wall.
Firern took off as soon as Emiryal had jumped and continued attacking. Emiryal landed softly as he cast a spell to compensate. If possible there was a plan to take any captured persons to an encampment just outside of Belatona. They couldn't expect the riders to keep an eye on a prisoner and fight. So there was the drop off point. As soon as he gave them Leliah he'd rejoin Firern.
He set off at the quick run of the elves. The slight breeze tugged at Leliah's hood and Emiryal abruptly halted when he realized who he had captured. His face was filled with dread. He released the spell keeping her bound. Though as he was under oath that was all he could do. He had to turn her in as a captive.

Zander stopped and raised New Leaf. This was not a fair fight, yet he would go down fighting instead of surrendering. At least the Varden had been given a slight distraction. I may be slower and less experienced, yet I have been given the chance to help these people. Do you honestly forget who I am, Murtagh, or are you too afraid to admit to your men that you gave me instructions to come here? Now, I will not surrender to an Empire rider, just like you will not to a Varden rider. Zander smiled when he realized that this was the end.
---------------------------------
Hetrand saw the rider, Zander, suddenly stop. That was strange, since Glaeran was still being chased by Thorn. It was too strange, so Hetrand ran over on silent feet. When he had reached the distance to be able to see, he stopped.

Murtagh thought he vaguely recognized Zander, but then again he met many people and fought even more. Zander's words baffled him for a moment. "You think I enjoy this?!" he said. He wasn't fond of the Varden but more than anything he wanted to be free from Galbatorix, and that could never be. "Listen, I don't know who you are or what instructions you are talking about."
Even before he finished speaking he swung Zar'oc at Zander's side. The blood red blade would make quick work of Zander if he had no magical protection or was a poor swordsman. Though even if he were protected and a good fighter he wouldn't last long. Few could stand before him and live.

Zander saw the blade coming even after he had seen the tensing of Murtagh's arm. With a twist of his wrist, Zander parried the blow and was mildly shocked at the strength. It was pretty sad that his wards weren't up and ready. I never said you liked fighting us.I know that it has to torment you. But, I swear to any gods there may be, I will have your head if Glaeran is injured by Thorn. I will never hurt you badly if you are noble and don't try to trick us. Zander swung his sword in an arc just like he would a hammer. In the same instant, he stabbed with New Leaf.

Leliah felt Firern swoop to land. She felt herself be pulled off of Firern’s back. A tear rolled down her face as she was dragged. She loved Emiryal with all her heart. She felt Emiryal’s jump down the wall. She knew she was safe within his arms. She tried to speak, but his spell bound her from doing so. She herself was dreading should he discover who she was. She felt the wind tug at her hood, She went to lift a hand to keep her hood down; But it was too late.
As soon as she felt the spell had been lifted she looked to Emiryal; Tears in her hazel eyes. She looked down; She knew what he had to do, His was bound by his oaths. “I’m sorry Emiryal.” She said quietly. She choked back tears before looking up to him again.

With in human speed Murtagh parred Zander's attack with each and quickly flicked it away in time to block New Leaf. "If Glaeran is injured by Thorn that will be the least of your worries," he said. He didn't see Zander as any threat at all and was more than confident he would not have a problem dispatching him if he wanted to.
"Thrysta Vendrin," he said calmly. The spell was designed to throw Zander against the nearest wall with quite a bit of force.
----------
Emiryal looked shocked and in despair. It was as if there could've been nothing worse than what he saw. His expression of hurt turned to rage though. Rage at the Empire and his oaths that gave him no choice. He helped Le'liah to her feet but didn't let go of her arm. He would have to turn her in. "Le'liah...why didn't you tell me...it's to late now," he said. Even as he spoke three Empire horse men were riding toward them to relieve Emiryal of his captive.

Zander looked around as he stood up after being thrown back. If his armour hadn't been on, he probably would have died. It was really surprising how easily the spell had taken him back. Jierda. The spell was spit out as Zander jumped aside, expecting an attack. It was directed toward a tower behind Murtagh. If the spell worked, it would shatter the tower at the base and send a lot of stone tumbling onto Murtagh's unsuspecting head.

Leliah gulped, She looked Emiryal in the eye; Tears running down her cheeks. ”I couldn’t, You bound me from speaking…” She turned and saw the three Empire horsemen; She smiled. Time to stir things up a little… She smiled. She decided to finally use Maelamanin, She aimed and let an arrow sink into the heart of one of the horsemen. She wiped her tears and aimed again; Shooting the horse and not its rider. She put Maelamanin back and unsheathed her sword: Lashing out at the last horsemen. Decapitation always works... She thought. She looked back at Emiryal; Eyes brimming with tears. “I’m so sorry Emiryal; I saw Firern out there and I was utterly shocked…” Tears rolled down her cheeks. She sobbed silently to her hands.

Murtagh lunged at Zander with a flick of Zar'oc. He had heard Zander's words and it took him a moment to realize what the intended target of the spell was. He nimbly darted to the side narrowly avoiding being crushed. Though of course should he have chosen to not move he could've survived with magic, something he had apple of. Who's side are you on? Trying to kill me while tearing apart the Varden's newly claimed town?" he said mockingly.
-------------------------
Before Emiryal could say anything more Leliah and drawn her bow. He felt very guilty for capturing her and having bound her. Had he known he would've tried to avoid it. He didn't have time to react before she had fired off two arrows one killing a rider. He drew his own blade in one fluid motion and blocked her attack on the last horsemen. He actually wanted her to succeed and get away but he couldn't let her kill the Empire's men while he just watched.
"I'm sorry as well, but there isn't anything I can do. Please don't make me fight you," Emiryal said in a hushed tone. He held his sword at ready. Tears rolled down his face as well as he struggled to hide his sorrow.

Lryian sat on the saddle on Sythlern's back and watched the other riders. We should join them you know. The silver dragon said as he looked back at Lryian. Lryian looked away and refocused on the battle.
"Ok.... But are you sure you can fight? You can't even breath fire yet." Lryian asked with a worried tone. Sythlern snortted and flicked his large tail. I think I can manage without fire. Unlike you. Sythlern retortted. Lryian glared at Sythlern and withdrew his sword.
"I so can." Lryian replied as he observed his sword. Sythlern loosened his grip on the ground underneath him and spread his wings. Then let's go. He replied. Lryian grabbed the handles on the saddle as Sythlern began to take off and join the battle.
----------------------------------------------------------
Amanes pulled her sword out of its scabbard and returned her gaze to the battle. Why hadn't she joined yet? That question haunted her for some reason, but she very much knew the answer. Most likely because of Silis. Her adopted sister had been fusing over the hatchling back at camp and forcing Amanes to take care of it. Of course she had no rpoblem with that, but she wanted to fight. Nystia's voice still echoed in her head though, asking if she could go. The elf had shaken her head and left.
