Irnstad

Let's reflect on this story very briefly, Irnstad is a 17 year old soldier for the Varden who was out exploring. He glanced to his right and noticed a huge golden egg.. He knew what it was, so he tied his horse to a tree and retrieved it. Noticing it was getting dark and that the Varden might take it from him, he slept next to it, hugging it tightly. When he woke up he noticed dawn was breaking, and they might be wondering where he went.
Swiftly he picked up the golden egg, not noticing the cracks in it and put it in the saddle bags before hopping on. Irnstad then spurred his horse as fast as it could go, hoping for one, not to be seen by any urgal, and two, that no one noticed his prolonged absence and that there was no search party.
He was too focused on keeping his horse on track that he didn't notice the big golden dragon that had hatched and was staring at him from the saddle bag, being bumped around. Irnstad's sword was swinging at his side, almost hitting the dragon a few times. It eventually managed to climb out and up Irnstad's leg, and again he didn't notice it. Eventually it reached his lap and bumped it. Irnstad wasn't too far now from the entrance.
Irnstad felt this so he looked down and noticed the big golden baby dragon staring up at him. Startled, he yelled and fell off the horse face first into the mud. He heard a crack in his left wrist and noticed the horse continuing to ride on, but the dragon had jumped off. He looked up through mud-covered eyes and saw it, "What the heck?" he muttered. Am I a Rider? There is no way this happened to me. Those were his last thoughts as the dragon bumped into his right palm, sending a searing pain up it as he collapsed again.
When he woke up, the dragon was curled up on his leg. Irnstad glanced at his hand where the dragon touched him, and sure enough, the Gedway Ignasia was imprinted into his palm. I am a Rider, he thought, then he felt the presence of another mind with his, immediately he withdrew, he had learned about others invading his mind and had training for it in the Varden. Immediately he set up a mental barrier, blocking out the invader.
He noticed the dragon looked confused, as if he had something to do with it. Irnstad just smiled and pet the dragon with his left hand, forgetting he had broken his wrist when he fell off the horse, which by now had escaped. He immediately screamed in agony before the dragon seemed to heal it. It touched his wrist and he felt his bone mend. Now that was cool.
He also knew about magic, he knew that since he was apparently a Rider now he could do it, so he muttered the infamous lines of Eragon, "brisingr." Nothing happened, okay then, that would have to take some training, as he assumed. So first things first, he had to get back to the Varden, then obviously they couldn't take the egg from him, as it had hatched for him. The baby dragon was much bigger than those he had seen before, it was a little bit more than half the length of his 6'2 body, he estimated about 4 feet long, definitely a huge dragon.
He looked around his surroundings, some of it looked familiar, he estimated he was about 5 miles from the entrance. Irnstad now had a dragon, though he would much prefer to rider a horse, he could still walk. He was also very glad the dragon healed his wrist, if he was attacked he couldn't fight off Urgals with one hand. Irnstad then remembered one thing he forgot to do, name the dragon.
He knew the dragon could understand him, so he asked it about a few names, all female. Irnstad then remembered, he didn't know a gender, so quickly he flipped it over and checked, definitely a male. No wonder the dragon blew smoke at all those names. Mentioning a few more names, this time male, he was stumped. Then he remembered a name he heard a long time ago and said it, "Valdr, how about that?" The dragon obviously liked it, and it agreed to be called that, Irnstad could just feel it somehow.
That's when he heard a voice off to the west, quickly he drew his sword and Valdr stood next to him, trying to look threatening, blowing smoke and showing his teeth. Nervously Irnstad called out, "who's there?" Irnstad had a feeling that Valdr could be aggressive, despite just hatching. He was definitely a big dragon. "Seriously, show yourself!" he called out again, raising his sword threateningly and Valdr letting lose a growl, which was definitely a dragon's growl, a baby dragon, but a dragon nonetheless, and that was scary enough.
