Ri'Shei walked at a leisurely pace through the undergrowth. It was a warm day, which the spartan was glad for. Being from the desert, she was far better accustomed to dealing with heat than with the cold and wet weather she had endured in recent weeks. The tall elf-like woman crouched and reached down with an elegant dark-skinned hand to pick a purple flower which caught her eye. She carried on walking, smiling as she examined the plant. The petals were silky to the touch, and while the flower did not have much of a smell, it was pretty. The scenery outside the desert was at least better than inside; with few plants, there was much less to look at in the desert.
There was no particular reason for her being here, a short walk north of the Ninor river. She had heard rumours of sightings of a dragon with no Rider - a rare wild dragon - but people had a habit of making things up so she didn't really believe them. It was simply nice to be outside. Walking helped ease her mind. She could think through anything that needed thinking through, or as she was doing now she could simply enjoy the view and the freedom. As much as everyone said the Empire was strict and oppressive, she had found a lot more freedom on their side. She could fight or undertake exciting missions, go where she pleased unless something was needed of her, in which case fair enough. It was a good balance of having things to do which mattered, and being able to do as she pleased.

Although she did'nt know it, Ri'Shei was in for a big surprise. Though the rumors were ture, they were only so to a certain extent. There was not just a Wild Dragon who dwelled near the river, but also Camarat, a Dragon Spirit. The spitting image of a dragon in his dragon form. He walked around near the River, patrolling for danger and making sure the cave he dwelled in was hidden enough. Though it was crude, he thought, it was better than using Magic as it would constantly sap his large amount of stamina. For a dragon who was a couple centuries old, he was rather small. His full size coming to about the size of only a small estate(Around 4-5 large houses big).
Camarat was warily Neutral. Not wanting to have to serve under anyone. He decided that a free life was better than anything else. His thoughts were interrupted as a plant he felt had it's connection to life severed and enter the void. His head snapped up, and his couple pairs of legs silently and nervously trampled. He quickly turned into a human and silently unsheathed Occolus, his sword. He cautiously walked to where he felt the disrubtion and saw what seemed to be an Elf. It was tall, dark-skinned and emitated an aura of gracefulness and power. He quickly walked into the trees and asked,Who are you? Why are you here? Weren't you taught not to mess with other peoples' business?. Hoping he wodn't be identified as the other dragon he had saw a few times, he stepped into the light. His blonde hair flying to one side and his emerald eyes questioning.

Ri'Shei did not see Camarat in his dragon form, only noticing him as he walked toward her in human form, questioning her in what seemed to her like quite a threatening manner. He had a sword unsheathed, emerald eyes gazing right at her. His appearance and words surprised her; she had not been expecting someone to approach her acting as though she was not allowed to take a walk near the river. The man appeared to be a half-elf, so there was a 50% chance he would have at least a weak form of magic. Well, that was by Ri'Shei's reckoning, anyway. Magic was a rare gift in humans, but being half elf meant there was a chance he would have magical abilities, although they could be weakened by his human blood. She was not to know that he was a dragon spirit, having never heard of them before.
"My name is Ri'Shei, of the spartans hailing from the Hadarac Desert. I can assure I am merely here to enjoy the scenery. It's a nice day, so I went for a walk. I fail to see how that's messing with anyone else's business, seeing as all I'm doing is walking. Probably wouldn't have even spoken to you if you hadn't spoken to me like that," she responded. At first, her voice was respectful and formal, but gradually her annoyance seeped into her voice and it grew cold. While she made no effort to reach for her weapons, she was ready to should this stranger try anything. His outburst made it seem as though he had something to hide, and the sword in his hand was not exactly the most friendly of gestures.

Camarat bit his lip. Relief seeped through him. So she wasn't part of a scout party. The last one that came never went back. He sheathed Ocollus as a gesture of peace and walked past her. As he went in front of her, he hesitated, feeling that was rude. He turned and said,"My apologies. I'm just not used to visitors. I live here in fact. So forgive me for my manners." He was glad he was tall but Ri'Shei still towered above him. Making a gesture with his hand, he made a slight bow and left to the river. As he left sight he turned into a dragon again.
He swam to the bottom of the river and settled in the cave he made though he still watched outside. He knew the stranger would probably come look for him. But he would be down there for ever.

Ri'Shei gave a disapproving grunt as the man apologized, looking down on him. She watched him leave, a sudden curiosity sparked within her. It was unusual for people to just leave without talking or fighting, depending on their alliances. The man might be a recluse, but to act so abnormally over-defensive before just walking away suggested that he had something to hide. Hide, or protect. Was he caring for a wanted criminal, a wounded but powerful threat to the Empire such as the dragon she had heard about? If there were a new strong Empire soldier she could find or a wanted member of the Varden, there would be rewards for bringing them to the Empire. She would not be a good Empire supporter if she were not to investigate, and the possibility of rewards tempted her.
The man was out of sight now, but she could catch up. With elven stealth and grace she stalked through the grass, taking care with every step to not tread on a dry leaf or twig or anything else that would make a noise if trodden on. She traced his path towards the river, although it was difficult to track him. There was a point after which more plants were trampled, as though something large had passed by. Perhaps he was indeed hiding something, and perhaps it was some large beast. A dragon was a possibility which was brought to the forefront of her mind, given the rumours she had heard. Was the man a Rider? She grinned. She would not be able to take on a Rider and dragon, or even a wild dragon, alone, but there would be rich rewards for swiftly contacting her friend, Ragdar, with the news so that he might round up the other Riders to bring down and capture this dragon and its Rider, if it had one.
Upon reaching the water, however, she found no-one. There was no sign of the man or any dragon, the muddy water hiding any sign of the cave in which Camarat was hiding. She frowned, unsure of how he could have hidden this quick. A glance up at the sky told her he had not flown off. So where was he? She looked at the water. He could be under there, holding his breath. But dragons did not have gills, so he would have to come up for air sometime. If she reached out with her mind, she could be faced with the full force of a dragon's vast mind, so did not try that, instead watching and waiting, looking closely all around for any sign of movement.

As Ri'Shei neared the Lake, Camarat grinned. He would have a fun time toying with her. He started flapping his wings, causing the water to fly onto Ri'Shei and come crashing on her. He continued to thrash all around the Lake, disturbing the water and making waves everywhere. Then he began to breathe fire underwater, causing the water to boil and churn before he burst out, a wall of water concealing him then he plunged down again.
He spoke to nature. He asked the trees to tangle Ri'Shei then retreat. He made the water churn and the Lake was disturbed. He summoned thunder clouds as he repeadetly thrashed and burst out. All this show just to scare away a single human. He smiled in spite of himself. Knowing that he was probably going to be seen, he leaped out of the water and plunged back in, hoping to scare away Ri'Shei. He did not hate nor love the Empire. However he still stayed Neutral.

The water churned, growing steadily more restless. Had she stumbled upon some angry spirit? Ri'Shei took a wary step back. Waves crashed over her, drenching her, which was not entirely unpleasant given the high temperatures of the day. The water bubbled and steamed, boiling, thunder crashed, a wall of water hid a great golden-red mass from view... but the wild dragon had been rumoured to be black-scaled. This was something else. Plants grew and constricted her yet withdrew as she struggled. A huge shape, like a dragon, then leaped out the water. The intimidated, soaked and very irritated Ri'Shei frowned at it. If the man had been trying to hide it, it wasn't doing a very good job of keeping itself concealed. What was going on around her was very impressive and powerful magic, but jumping in plain sight was not expected.
She took another step back, then shook her head and moved closer to the river. She could try swimming to get a better look, but as a person of the desert she had never swam before so would likely drown should she enter the water. Instead she murmured "Garjzla" (light), a fiery golden orb of light springing into life beneath the water. Hopefully this might reveal to her the creature that lurked within.

He wa having a bad day.
As the light appeared, suddenly illuminating the dark cave he was in, he jumped out eyes burning and turned back human, getting out of the Lake. His clothes were soaked and his emerald eyes burning. He continuiously rubbed them and stood up, facing Ri'Shei who looked rather mystified. He spread his arms and shrugged,"What? Don't look at me like that." he said. He plopped down onto the cobblestone, quite tired after his initial fun game. He was wary ofRi'Shei though and kept a distance.
"Might I ask why you really are here? The other dragon already left long ago. Just leave me alone! You bloody never give up! Aren't two dead search parties enough?! I said it once and I'll say it gain:I'm not with you or the Varden!! I haven't done anything to you! Why do you keep coming after me?!" he exploded, sick of being hunted.

The rumours must have distorted the colour of the dragon's scales through multiple times telling the story. Perhaps someone had seen it in the dark and simply thought it black. The dragon tensed, sprang out the water - and became human. To be more specific, the man who had snapped at her earlier. She gaped at him in fierce puzzlement, although it was not an innocent look of wonder and awe, nor a gaze showing interest in the knowledge that could be gained. This was a look of confusion, but also one calculating the use this discover could be to her. Shapeshifting creatures were not unheard of. Werecats were well known and dangerous, siding occasionally with the Varden but mostly doing their own thing. It was bad to get on the wrong side of one of those, and they were sly and deceitful. Werewolves, on the other hand, were just as dangerous but far less subtle. There were some elves who could weave powerful magic after years of study to alter their appearance by growing fur or feathers, not that she could think of the point in that, but nothing she knew of could transform between dragon and human. This discovery alone would earn her a reward.
"I was telling the truth earlier. I really did just come here for a walk. I heard rumours of a dragon but didn't think they were true, all I wanted to to take a break from the politics and the training. Can get a little cramped, you know? As for the search parties, I wasn't even aware the Empire knew about you. A dragon we might try to tackle without much word spreading around, but something like you? Rumours would spread. However secret things are, I'd have heard word," she smiled, thinking of her friend Ragdar. He would have known about this, and he had not told her anything. Not even a hint that this man existed. "Regardless of what I know about what the Empire's been doing, I do know as well as anyone that once they see someone as a good potential Empire supporter, they will be very persuasive indeed in ensuring they gain their loyalty. Galbatorix does not enjoy losing and knowing that there is someone with power out their not fighting for him," she gave a small smile, somehow feeling relaxed despite some part of her mind telling her that this was a bad place to be. The feelings soothed and sharpened her mind somehow, "I can assure you I'm not going to try and hunt you, though. I'm alone, and not stupid enough to go attacking a man who can turn into a dragon by myself. Speaking of which... how can you do that? Sorcery? A gift from the Gods themselves?" this question was more interest than any ulterior motive. If it was something she might be able to achieve herself, she would go ahead and attempt it straight away, but she doubted it. She tried to keep her expression guarded, mind sealed off completely with a thick barrier.

He snorted. A gift from the Gods? Ha! As if. The Gods had hated him since he was born. Always cursed with bad luck. His friends slaughtered, his father murdered, his mother dead. He was all that was left. His brothers and sisters died with his father at war..alas he was the youngest and did not go. He saw the hungry gleam in Ri'Shei's eyes and decided that next time she was here, if she was here, he would be careful. She most probably didn't mean him harm, but the prospect of rewards for her seemed to be too much. All this he was able to tell without reading her mind. It was in her caramel-like golden eyes. Her face gave it all.
She continued talking in sincerity, proving she really was just taking a walk. It was just a coincidence she passed by his Lake. He actually didn't know. Politics...training... Training he knew, politics? Not so much. And in fact..the Empire wasn't aware of him. They had mistook him for the other dragon. He let the first few parties live...but the last 2 went to hell.
As she began talking about him supporting the Empire his face darkened. The storm clouds that had recently been hiding re-appeared even worse than before. He would NOT be anybody's tool of war. As Ri'Shei smiled he was ready to zap her to a million pieces. Though she continued her talking. No duh, he thought to himself as she said she won't try to hunt him. It was all too obvious who would win if she tried..even with a few soldiers. Unless she had a few Riders and Dragons up her sleeve.
He thought of telling her about his race which no one knew about. However he quickly discarded the idea. He would tell her the truth..but only to an extent."Nein, it isn't not sorcery nor a gift. I would tell you the truth, but only if you swore in the Ancient Language not to tell ANYONE about it. Other than that I cannot." he said to her, voice more gentle than before.

Ri'Shei glanced up at the storm clouds which were gathering again. Staring at Camarat closely, she had not seen him speak... how could he use magic without saying a word of the Ancient Language? It was possible, she knew, but highly dangerous and only to be used in a desperate life-or-death situation, not some petty show to intimidate a solitary soldier who had just declared she would not attack. She completely understood his reason for not telling her how he could transform into a dragon. It not being sorcery or a gift left her with not idea of what this man could be. He couldn't be a god if what he said about the Ancient Language was true. Surely gods could not be bound by words of any sort. Besides, while he seemed strong, he was not as strong as a god by a long way. A dragon and a man, both the same person... it was a curious puzzle, but there were more important things that learning what he was. She was a person of action rather than learning.
"Were you here looking for the wild dragon, too? You some sort of dragon-shepherd?" she asked, then shook her head, "Well, never mind what you are. I suppose the Ancient Language will hardly permit you to answer me. You keep your secrets," here she paused, turning away for a moment to look around at her surroundings. She had not had time to register the scenery before being distracted by Camarat's presence in the water. It was useful to know about where you were; rocks, trees and objects that could be used to aid combat; escape routes; things of that sort. Looking over her shoulder back to the dragon spirit, she continued speaking. "As much as you might declare your neutrality and say you will not help the Varden or the Empire, you must be at least more sympathetic to one side or the other. Many people might assume that I only joined the Empire for the money or security from Empire soldiers and guards. That's not true. I truly believe our cause is just, that this kingdom needs the law and order the Varden cannot provide."

"Dragon-Shepherd? Bah! Why would I when I myself am a dragon of sorts," he said hating the thought of trapping a dragon as he continued,"Why do you think that Galbatorix is just? Is it that he killed his order because of an Urgal and his own mistake? I spit on the likes of people like you and the Varden. To you all, war is all you know. I favor neither you see. Both are at fault. The Empire fo not revolting on the king and the Varden for waging war.".
Though he felt inclined to Ri'Shei. He had ruined her stroll so he decided."I will take a walk back to the out-skirts of your city seeing as I did ruin your day. Though if anyone attempts to capture me, none but the King and a few old Riders could save you all from my wrath. I may also enter your city to see." he said as sorry.

Ri'Shei frowned as Camarat expressed his disgust at the actions of both the Empire and the Varden. All they knew was war? What a ridiculous assumption to make. Until mere months ago she knew nothing of a war, her life one of peace and boredom. The dragon-man was exaggerating and making her seem in the wrong for fighting for her beliefs, something which made her feel deeply insulted. Her eyes narrowed. "Galbatorix is cruel, I can't deny, but the people of this land need the laws and protection he can offer. I believe civilization needs the Empire. I wasn't here for the start of the war, but they could hardly stand and be slaughtered under the Varden's attacks. You seem to criticize me for standing up for what I believe in. If everyone just went and hid in some cave in a river at the first sign of a challenge, where would we be? There would be no advancements, and anyone could have their way, no matter how destructive and cruel their intentions. The Varden and the Empire fight because we both strongly believe very different things, and are willing to sacrifice everything we have to ensure what we think is right comes to pass. You act as if acting on my strongest morals and most passionate beliefs is a horrible crime to be spat upon; is not apathy a worse evil? Do you really think I could just allow a group of lawless rebels to take over and bring civilization crashing down for any reason? Yes, war is difficult in all ways, emotionally and physically, but I'm not about to sit on my bum while people are free to trample over what I know is best for the world!" she snapped.
Rant over, the spartan glared at Camarat and was quiet for a moment. He was powerful, sure, and had strong magic to enable him to turn into a dragon and back, but she loathed his disdain for conflict. In her eyes, hiding in a river while so much was going on was just cowardly. He did not even have to involve himself in any war, and could easily pass as a normal person, so she could not see any reason for him to hide aside from cowardice. "Sure, see the city if you so wish. Have you seen any settlement recently?" she agreed for him to return with her to the city. Her tone was cold. Whether or not Camarat had intended to insult her, that single very small remark was to Ri'Shei a very negative remark attempting to make Camarat seem superior to her beliefs. "Just a word of warning; I have little command within the Empire. If you try anything funny like turning into a dragon, you'll have a lot of people on your back. There's no way I can stop them and no way I can warn them not to attack. You can't hold me responsible for your actions around the Empire, OK? Don't do anything stupid or they won't be anyone able to help you," she warned him.

Camarat accepted the torrent of words from Ri'Shei. She had her beliefs and he had his. Usually, anyone in his place with his skill would have quickly slit Ri'Shei's throat. He however respected her for saying her thoughts even though she was looking at one of the oldest races. He knew she didn't respect him for hiding but, he did not care. Peace was better than war. If Galbatorix would simply give protection without madness he would have respected the Empire a lot. However, Galbatorix was mad. And such a King was not a king. The Varden also are at fault. Revolt, OK. Just do not wage war. Escape and that's enough. The land was weary of the blood that watered it. Why? Just because of a man and a group. He shook his head sadly as he thought of that.
Camarat smiled as he saw Ri'Shei's distate at his love for peace and hate for carnage and conflict. But as he realized she thought he was a coward he sneered. Coward? He was no coward."As a matter of fact, the few settlements I've seen are the small camps your troops made, which I had for lunch yesterday." he said to her, with a choppy grin. He licked his lips in emphasis to his phrase, reminding her he could turn into a dragon at will.
As she warned him of what to do and what not to do in the city he nodded. He could deal with that. He stood up and dusted himself off then walked in the direction of the city. He would feel itchy to stay as a human for so long. It felt..small. But he had a feeling that in this trip, he could get a good amount of food on the way as long as he distracted Ri'Shei and cornered some people alone. He licked his chops in anticipation for the dinner he was about to receive.

Ri'Shei raised an eyebrow when Camarat claimed to have eaten an entire camp just for lunch. Her expression was not one of disgust and loathing, however, rather one of vague amusement. "Of course, a person who preached peace would go around slaughtering and eating people who don't even know you exist when there are fish in that river and deer in the woods," she chuckled as another thought occurred to her, "I would say that was cannibalism, but you don't seem quite human. None the less, it's got to be somewhat cannibalistic seeing as you're a human some of the time," she said, dismissing any possibility that Camarat's words were true. The idea of him eating people was like the idea a werecat could eat people. No doubt they could if they wanted to, but it was a grotesque idea. Werewolves did it, but they didn't have control as a beast and were nothing more than animals.
Ri'Shei looked up at the sky, finding the position of the sun. From that, she could tell the direction they should head in to reach the city. All her life spent in the desert made her an excellent navigator by the sky, since when all you could see for miles around was sand or rock, you had nothing to go by except for the sun. It was a case of being good at navigating by the sky or not finding food, water, or other traveling villages you were supposed to meet. She motioned for Camarat to follow as she began walking, walking alongside the river. "How long were you hiding in the river, anyway?" she asked, trying to make conversation. She had some idea of where she stood with this strange man, but there was a lot about him she did not know and she was not sure if she was comfortable with whatever he was.

Camarat knew Ri'Shei did not believe him."If I turned into my dragon form and you saw how big I was, would you believe me?" he asked her."I've been in the River for only a few months. Usually, I'm on the move. Sometimes eating Varden troops and sometimes Empire troops. I gotta even out the balance you know?" he responded to her. Then to prove he could eat people at will, he turned into a dragon and snatched a man who was sleeping too late in the tree and gobbled him down.
As he turned back into a human, he told her,"I might as well tell you about my race. We are Dragon Spirits. In other words, we are Dragons that are nature. Being so connected to nature, we feel its evolution as humans and elves come along and so we retained the ability to turn into a human form. That is all I can tell you for now until you earn my full trust.". As they reached the city his jaw fell to the floor. He had never seen much of civilization so this was something huge. THe biggest he'd ever seen were the Varden cities.

Ri'Shei strongly disagreed with Camarat's eating people. When he turned into a dragon, she cried out in protest but it was too late, the other person had already been consumed. She glared at him when he transformed back. "Can't you just eat normal food? That man was perfectly innocent! Besides, even normal dragons don't eat people except on rare or desperate occasions! They stick to deer, elk, cows, that sort of thing. How can you talk about peace when you'll happily destroy peace yourself and slaughter innocent people?" she said angrily. She would have said more, but retrained herself, not wanting to find herself attacked. She thought Camarat was being very hypocritical and self-righteous acting the way he was.
Dragon spirits, eh? She'd never heard of them. Sounded like some special type of dragon that had separated from the others a long time ago, becoming more connected with humans. Something like that. "Suppose I should tell you a bit about my race, then. We spartans haven't been around that long, only a hundred years or so. We're sort of a merge of different races which came to the Hadarac desert to be joined a long time ago; Kull, human, elf and dwarf. We have traits from all of them, most obviously my height and somewhat elvish appearance. There are other things too, both strengths and weaknesses," she gave him a small smile.

Camarat shook his head at Ri'Shei's obvious dis-pleasure."You sure you don't want any? It's really good. Though normally I only eat the above part. The legs and feet are nasty. And as I said I'm not a normal Dragon. And also, as you can see, if I went ahead and stole some cows from a farmer, I wonder what would happen to me. Oh right! I'd have to move because the Empire would be after me. I never said I maintain peace. I only said I prefer peace. Though I am a hypocrite.. life isn't fair now is it?" he told her.
As they entered the city, he listened to Ri'Shei's explanation of her race. He nodded, it was the same almost as his race. He looked around, wondering where to go. He knew he must bring suspicion. A man with such a sword yet with ragged armor? Not much of a good impression."I do rather believe I stand out. What a boring little people, they don't seem much of comedy or entertainment do they? They just know how to stare." he told Ri'Shei, ignoring the huge crowd of people he had brought with him on accident.
Camarat tugged at Ri'Shei's sleeve in an attempt to get her attention and pointed at the castle."I wanna go there." he put it bluntly. He didn't care what would happen, he wanted to go to the castle. He felt something huge there. Something ancient, at least a couple centuries old. Two things in fact. One huge and the other small. He wondered what they could be to radiate so much power.

Ri'Shei was amused by the looks people were giving them. She was used to it, as few people had heard of the spartan race and she looked so obviously different to most of the other people around the Empire. It did not help that her height meant she loomed over everyone else, in plain sight. She had never heard of dragon spirits before so assumed they were unheard of among the majority of people, too, but lucky for Camarat he looked like a human, if a little elvish. It was his sword and armour that were attracting the unwanted attention, plus being accompanied by her couldn't help. She looked down at one of the people staring at them, looking back directly into their eyes with a cold glare. They left immediately, looking back nervously. This amused Ri'Shei, who did not mind too much that people were paying so much attention to them. "Don't worry about them, they can't do you any harm. It's your ragged armour and, if I may say so, magnificent sword, which make you stand out. They probably think you're some new high-ranking Empire guy since you're with me and dressed like that, and so might be confused as to why you're not in the best polished Empire armour," she explained to him her thoughts, having spent enough time around the civilians to know how they worked.
When Camarat pointed at the castle, Ri'Shei smiled and gave a small laugh. Of all the places for a neutral person to want to go... this could be interesting. "There? Sure, I can show you around. I don't know that place very well, so some exploring may be involved. I'm allowed in a lot of places there so you shouldn't get into trouble, but there are restricted areas where we can't go. It's something of a hub of Empire activity, so be on your guard, OK?" she warned him. 'Hub of Empire activity' was an understatement, but she wanted to see if he would figure out what this castle truly was. She led him towards it, making her way not to the elaborate main entrance but rather a side door used by servants. Less people would see them that way. A lot of people she knew, even high ranking people, preferred to use this entrance so that they would avoid the crowds and all-suspecting guards at the main entrance. It was simply more convenient this way.
