Before laving the northern cost of Lake Tudosten, Therious had sent Polyphemus into Furnost to scout for a inconspicuous vendor of goods. The rave had returned with the unfortunate news that the was a small garrison of men guarding the town. Instead of placing himself in another difficult situation Therious had given Poly a couple of coins and sent him to swap them out for a small bag of flour. Again the Raven returned with unfortunate news, after waiting in a tree outside the local supply shed Polyphemus had discovered even the smallest bag of flour would be too much for him to carry. Apparently in town there was a fairly large bakery so most of the inhabitants purchased their gods there rather than making their own. he did manage to pluck a fresh loaf of bread off a outdoor cooling rack, leaving the coins in it's place.
The forest around Lake Tudosten had been an extremely welcomed change to the mostly flat land he'd encountered since leaving the desert. While in his opinion the forest was a sad representation of vegetation, it did offer cover which had only recently become a major issue. It also offered free food, he was more then able to locate fruits, nuts, and berries that would sustain he and Poly quite well.
Poly spent the days making flights a long distance ahead of Therious and waiting lazily for him to catch up. He would rummage for bugs, and leftovers that forest floor offered up as food.
Their rather hasty pace slowed throughout the forest, not because of the density of the wood, they had made much better time in far worse conditions, but they longed for Du Weldenvarden while this was a poor replacement, it was better than nothing. Their paced had slowed enough that Therious was able to spend time each night meditating and each morning practicing the Rim'gar, it had also allowed him time to resume his daily journal, he was running low on parchment, after recanting the vents of the run in with the troop near the Ramr. Poly would join him in his meditations, his skill was no where near that of Therious, but it was still a noble effort. During th mornings he would practice acrobatics, mostly weaving at high speed between tree limbs, throwing in barrel rolls and loops at random intervals.
During the four and a half days they traveled through the forest Therious had sensed many a hunter well before it was necessary for them to hide themselves. The raven kept Therious thoroughly entertained with stories of the going ons of the forest creatures. Fights over territory, follies for food, even a couple times would direct Therious to creatures in need of aid, who he would help in any way possible.
They reached the southern edge of the forest early on the fifth day, from where Petrovya was clearly visible across the bay. As with Furnost, Poly was sent ahead to scout the town, this time pleasant tiding would follow his return.
To pass the time, and provide a chance to hone his skills Therious decided to craft a canoe. He selected a tree only a thumb or two wider than his waist and set to work. He sat before the tree cross legged, ad closed his eyes. In his mind he focused on the image of the tree, selecting a hair thin line near it's trunk.
"skera," ((cut)) he muttered rhythmically, the tree seemed to wobble slightly in the wind, and fell over. A precise straight cut resided on the top of the trunk and bottom of the feld tree, where they were once connected as one.
Briefly he opened his eyes and gazed intently on what would soon be his canoe. he took in the image and again closed his eyes.
Using the skera word Therious made short work of the trees limbs and disconnected its top leaving on solid log.
Again he opened his eyes, although this time he stood, he raised his staff towards the log and quickly stated "Reis'a" The log floated gently beside him as he made his way to the waters edge, lowering it into the water, where it rested unnaturally still in the water.
He set himself in a spot on the coast directly in front of the log, and again closed his eyes focusing the image into his mind's eye.
With heavy breath Therious said "Jeirda" and the log began to spin where it was floating.
"Skafa'" and all at once the bark of the tree began to remove itself. It came in one long strand like an apple being pealed by a skillful chef. Slowly from one side to the other the lighter tan of the wood revealed itself. When the task was complete Therious uttered, "eatr" and again the log stood still in the water, beside it a long string of bark floated gently in the wake.
Satisfied with the raw materials current state he set to work on the final step of the boat itself. Again committing his mind to the idea of the log's current image and the exclusion of all else he set to work. He breath slowed and began a slow in and out pattern. He rested his staff against his back so it slanted at angle before him cradled in the crook of his neck.
Slowly he began to chant the words,
" mikla pr'ottigr keipr
mikla pr'ottigr keipr
mikla pr'ottigr keipr....."
(( Literally translated is means "make great mighty small boat,"))
Over and over he chanted so that the words seem to run together in song. As he did so the log it self seemed to transmute into dough, wobbling and wavering in form as a long canoe began to take shape. Slowly the wood dimpled from the top down and elongated, small wood benches remained in the fore and aft of the vessel and it's tips tapered into fine curls at the tops. On the aft section the curl raised five palms high with a bit of a and broke in to a curved fork at the top. In the bottom of the boat below the curled neck a small round divot took shape in the wood.
The sun was mid way through it's day long trek across the sky when Therious first glanced Poly returning to him. He was just making the finishing touches on his newly formed dual bladed oar. The canoe and oar were plain, no markings on either, and light tan-nish white, but Therious was satisfied with their craftsmanship. he was weary from his mornings' work and sat against a tree while patiently awaited his friend.
Polyphemus glided into to the cove Therious had been working, he swooped inches from the water, turning his head to get a better view of his reflection.
"I need a bath, my feathers don't glitter like they do at home," he remarked.
"We shall try, but most likely the problem is we are to far from the songs of the forest of Du Weldenvarden. Their magic permeates all they come in contact with. The next portion he related in the ancient language, while the words themselves lacked definition to the bird, he did understand their meanings. "As soon as our wyrd allows will return to our home./i]
Changing the subject the bird began to speak of PetrovyaThe city is inviting, it is only a bit larger then a small village, but many many people inhabit it. The buildings are large and most gilded with shiny white stone. Their rooftops all have troughs at the edges which guide the rain water into smaller tubes which lead to the ground. The troughs make excellent perches.
The rooftops themselves arch upward to the sky and resemble mushrooms, which taper in to points in the middle of the caps. The mushrooms are brightly decorated with jewels, gold, and the shiny white stone. The are covered in symbols which I've never seen before. The people are kind and happy, and walk with smiles deeply embedded in their faces. They spread seed in the morning to encourage birds to gather, they fed me well, Therious knew that if he'd had the ability he would have been smiling deeply at that moment.
They discussed their options ad decided to wait until sundown to row into the village, and wasted the afternoon discussing the small town as seen from a birds eye view. Apparently the town was inhabited by humans although Poly had witnessed at least one dwarf in the village, scuttling from one building to the next. He did relay to Therious that he had sensed at least a couple of blessed ones in the town, this brightened Therious's mood, he was not looking forward to mingling with humans.
As the sun fell Therious clambered into his boat resting his staff in the fore of the boat. The hills on the western edge of the lake brought twilight on quickly and it became difficult to see much but the lamp lights along the edge of town. Therious raised his left palm in the direction of the gemstone poised in the top of his staff at the fore of the small craft. "kvekyva bla`r," he stated bluntly. The gemstone slowly gained light from within itself, casting a blue hue meters around the canoe.
He pushed the boat gently through the water with his magic crafted tapered oar, making short work of the distance of the bay. He ran the boat aground on the town's coastline, extinguished the light of his staff and walked gingerly in to town. The etchings on the buildings Therious recognized immediately as dwarvish, it's similarities to the ancient language made it fairly easy to discern a building which was said to contain several shops. He entered the building which was a bustling market, on the northern side of the building were situated several long tables stuffed full of people singing and enjoying various drinks. The building itself was open from sided to side, tables set in rows cluttered its floor, upon which all sorts of goods were sat. Near the door a dwarf sat twisting his beard with one hand and rolling a gold coin along the knuckles of his other. "Welcome friend, examine our wares, and when you decide upon what brought you here, bring it to me for payment. In the rear of the shop is our tavern, feel free to sample our spirits." the dwarf turned his attention back to his beard and coin, leaving Therious free to peruse the aisles. He selected a fuldonust fur blanket, a roll of parchment paper, two new quills, a couple of sewing needles, some thread, roasted nuts, and inquired at the bar for some cheese and bread.
He made his way back to the front of the store and paid happily for his goods, the atmosphere of the environment seemed to work its way in to his cheeks as well drawing a smile to his face, hidden behind his hood. The dwarf wrapped the goods neatly in parchment and secured it with a piece of twine.
Therious took his things and headed back to his vessel. He rowed out the the middle of the lake and let the boat drift.
Poly joined him soon after and they shared a meal of nuts, cheese, and bread. After dinner Therious sighed, "We have reached Surda. The skulblaka we seek is near. All we nee now is to gain her attention."
He laid out in the bottom of the boat and closed his eyes. His mind resounded with a chant in the ancient language boomed loudly like a whisper in the wind from the lake.
"Saphira Brightscales, I seek you, I am friend."
