Name: Glaedr
Side: Varden
Birthplace: Not official stated, but probably the Silverwod Forest, where Oromis was born.
Age: About 700
Gender: Male
Eldunari Color: Gold
Who will find/steal this Eldunari?: He gave his Eldunari to Eragon and Saphira, who still own it but left it with the Varden at his advice in case anything happened while they were away - they feared someone would steal Glaedr's Eldunari if they took it with them.
Where was the Eldunari be found?: Ellesmera, before Glaedr's death
Appearance: As a dragon, Glaedr was huge in size due to his age, three times the size of Saphira, being the last dragon aside from Shruikan to still be alive from before the Fall. He possessed great strength in thick muscled limbs, strong enough to hold their own against most other dragons. This strength was limited as he only had three legs, his left foreleg being reduced to a white stump after a terrible blow. His eyes were golden too, deep and wise.
Now, as an Eldunari, he is about a foot in diameter. His surface gleams with thousands of golden facets, glittering in light. The Eldunari emits its own light, too, a soft golden glow which seems uniform at first, but on closer inspection is formed from chaotic swirls of slightly different brightnesses.
Personality: Glaedr is very wise and seeks to inform and instruct others when they need counsel, not just when they want it. He knows when he is right and will persist, regardless of how the other party feels since he believes it will be better for them in the long run if they listen to his advice. He loathes being ignored, growing angry if someone defies his words. His anger is not something anyone would want to provoke. He is used to getting his own way and not so used to being around many people, having lived in seclusion for a long time. As such, if someone acts in a way he doesn't like, he won't hesitate to let them know so, usually by stern words and a good telling off.
In many ways, he is the grumpy old man of dragons; and he has every right to be grumpy. The death of his Rider was still recent and he is far from over it, deeply depressed and finding it difficult to see enjoyment and goodness in the world. He offers advice and wisdom which does not always seem sensible at first, but he has seen so much he usually knows what he is doing. He is very sure of himself, but is less confident since Oromis' death. He can barely even bring himself to talk to anyone, and when he is coaxed to talk he is irritable and short-tempered, often reaching a limit after a few minutes and shutting people off again, drifting back into his vast consciousness.
--->Likes: Knowledge, teaching, hope from new Riders
--->Dislikes: Galbatorix, Murtagh and Thorn, impatience, his advice being ignored
--->Strengths: Vast knowledge, mental power, magic
--->Weakness: No body, not recovered from Oromis' death
History: Glaedr lived in the Rider's prime before the Fall. As custom, his egg was presented to many young people until his Rider was found. This was Oromis, an elf who was twenty at the time. They trained together and for nearly a century traveled the world, helping people on missions given to them by Vrael, then the head of the Dragon Riders, as any Rider and dragon were expected to do at the time to protect the people. They moved to Ilirea to take on apprentices. Glaedr taught their dragons the ways of aerial combat, flying in all weathers, how to breathe fire better, and a whole host of other important lessons regarding flying and taking care of themselves, as well as possible dangers and weaknesses to dragons. Among their apprentices were Morzan and Brom, therefore Glaedr trainer Saphira I and Morzan's dragon, who no longer has a name as a dragon of the Forsworn. They considered separating them because of Morzan's cruel treatment of Brom, but that never happened.
When the Forsworn formed and the Fall was upon the Riders, Oromis and Glaedr both fought to defend themselves and their Order. They fought well, but were forced to leave the war after a grave injury. They were led into a trap by two Forsworn, Kialandi and Formora. To escape, Oromis cast a spell to shift their entire bodies to a slightly different position, breaking the trap and allowing them to move. However, a spell Kialandi had learned from Galbatorix, who had learned it from the Shade Durza, separated Oromis from the energy required to cast all but the most basic of spells, and Formora's dragon severed Glaedr's left foreleg. They had to flee to Du Weldenvarden when Galbatorix took over Ilirea, else risk their lives. They were both crippled for life, and lived for most of Glabatorix's rule in secrecy and seclusion within the forest. They were the best hope in training new Riders of the old ways, so stayed and waited.
Finally, Saphira hatched for Eragon and Glaedr waited for them to arrive in Ellesmera. When they did, he became Saphira's mentor, teaching her all the things he taught young dragons back before the Fall. As the only good male dragon in existence, he suspected the last female dragon might make some advance on him, which he rejected firmly and completely. She attacked, but later apologized.
Later on, when Eragon and Saphira returned to Du Weldenvarden, Glaedr and Oromis were able to confirm that Brom was indeed Eragon's father. It was there that Glaedr revealed to them the secret of Eldunari, and gave up his own for them to hold. He wanted the new Rider he felt was destined to kill Galbatorix to have his help even after his body died, and trusted the boy and his dragon deeply. It was a good decision. At the battle of Gil'ead, Galbatorix possessed Murtagh's body and killed Oromis. Glaedr stopped everything to try and save his Rider, but it was too late. Furious at Murtagh and Thorn, he managed to bite off the last three feet of Thorn's tail before he too was killed, his body dying but his soul living on in the Eldunari he had thankfully given to Eragon before Murtagh could get his hands on it.
After this, it some some time before he spoke again. He withdrew completely from the world, shutting it out to drown himself in his own misery, thoughts dark. The hurt slowly faded to the point he can talk to people now, but a large part of him feels completely dead. He sternly trained Eragon still from his Eldunari. When Eragon decided to leave in search of Arya, he opted to stay behind in the care of the Varden, fearing what those in the north might do to him and his mind should he get into the wrong hands.
