Hetrand rode on the black stallion with his hand on the pommel of his sword while he looked over the terrain that was the Empire. Therinsford, a small town near where Carvahall had been, lay sprawled in front of him and his hand picked troops. Each man was picked for their skill because in this town was a suspected Empire battalion and the Varden could not have them attacking the elves from behind while they thought they were safe. So in Hetrand's group were 25 archers, 15 spearmen, 15, heavy weapons specialists, and 25 swordsmen. All of them were mounted and all of them wore armor that was considered heavy for their respected weapons. Hetrand stopped and stared ahead as he realized that something wasn't right for there were no noises being sounded around them. Quickly the group bunched together and drew their weapons while they looked for the trouble.

Reru smiled as he watched them from his perch on a rooftop. Hidden more so by magic than actually cover. Fear yes that was good scare them frighten them. Those reactions could be used against them. Even the best trained solider was afraid of something. The half elf waited allowing time to go by as he sized up the situation. It seemed this was only a group of soldiers, no rider no, magic users, no challenge. It seemed the. Varden didn't consider them too much of a threat, they would soon learn of their mistake. After the encounter with Brenton, they might as well make their move on ellesmera. If the elves thought they were safe they were wrong. "Brisingr," he said igniting a ring if oil that had been set up earlier. The ring surrounded the Varden's troops but with enough space to allow them to scatter and separate some.
Reru waved at a man behind him, Manvji captain of an elite group of archers. Not as good as elves but better than most humans could boast with a bow. From all over the city as one the archers appeared coming out of hiding each one had a torch and arrows with pitch. As one they fired a volly of flaming arrows at the tightly knit group of Varden men. To avoid the arrows they would have to scatter or deflect the arrows with shields. Scattering was what Reru was hoping for. Not all the archers had fired a few held back, his snipers. They were to shoot the moment they saw an opportunity too, such as someone scattering. There main target though was Hetrand. Reru heard a twang of a bow as Manvji loosed an arrow behind him aimed at Hetrand. The Varden would not win this battle he would see to that. This day would belong to the Empire.

Hetrand gave the command to use a water spell just as the fires sprang up but it wasn't soon enough because a few of his archers were struck down by flaming arrows. One man grew scared and went to flee and try to jump the flames but as he broke from their ranks he was shot down and that was when it happened. Hetrand knew something wasn't right but he couldn't figure it out so he raised his shield ever so slightly and a slight impact could be felt through the metal. He looked and an arrow was at his horse's feet and he grinned. So the Empire thought they could kill him with an arrow did they? We he would just have to show them what happened to the last group that opposed him and tried to kill him with an arrow to the heart. Just then the fires were quenched and the group rode out and hard toward the city, the whole way looking for hiding places. Just past the city was a reasonable rocky ledge perfect for archers to pick off people so Hetrand sent a group of people toward that ledge and then a group of people to the left in a false trail. Hetrand spun and called out in a loud voice that rang out through the air. Come out and fight me, you coward! I thought Riders, Empire especially, were supposed to be fearless and never backed down from a fight. Well you are the biggest yellow-bellied coward I have met.
