Legend of the Dragon Book one: Wars By: Daniel Brakke To Mrs. Christiansen and Mrs. Hagen: Both of whom always supported me. And Christopher Paolini, who got me interested by his own books.
Interlude Once upon a time, there was a town that raised elemental dragons called Valley Roost. The Raisers, who bred dragons and raised the dragons for sport, country or money, found a way to find out what the dragon chose by using these special diamond-shaped stones that would glow certain colors when put up next to the dragon egg. The elements were: Earth which could move any thing that came from and on the ground; Fire was an element not to be recond with, it had the most destructive power, the power to melt things, and much more, it was the dragon that was used by mounted soldiers in wars; then there was Wind that could move absolutely any thing that came into contact with air, it also had to do with thunder, the dragon that had Wind magic could summon major thunder storms; and Water, the healing element, which could heal the most severe of all and any wounds and poisons, and summon floods of great proportions, so having those powers made the Water dragon the most popular Element. And last of all, in rare cases, was the Golden Dragon that took on ALL elements, this dragon would be the hardest to control, but the best company any person could wish for. In this book there will be adventure, heartbreak, and comedy. We join our star of this book when he is a young boy of the age of 13, training to raise dragons in a beautiful countryside town during the summer. Happy taming Daniel Brakke

Chapter 1: The Beginning
“Ryen, time to get up, or you’ll be late for training, again.” It was a cold morning, Ryen Hesk, a tall young boy, with brown hair, fair skin, and scrawny for his age, was learning to raise dragons, and had to get out of his warm, comfy bed before sun rise every day for 3 years now. But to day was special, today he would get his last lesson before becoming an apprentice to some old guy who was getting too old for dragons and wanted to pass what he learned to younger generations of raisers “I’m up, I’m up. So what’s for breakfast? I’m starved.” He said as he got out of bed. “Your favorite; mush.” His mom said “Mmmmmm.” His voice dripping with sarcasm. “Well, hurry up, or it’ll be cold.” As Ryen headed down stairs in his brown tunic, white shirt, brown pants and tall boots, the smell of eggs and bacon sizzling on the fire caught his nose, slightly surprised at his mothers humor. ‘This is going to be a good day.’ He thought to him self. After his fine breakfast, he wondered his way to his friends house, CJ, who is an interesting character. He looked much like Ryen, but a little bigger, and for some reason wanted to have nothing but fire dragons. He lived down the road from Ryen, and they had been walking to training since they stated training. They met each other at regular school and have been pals ever since. They both wanted to share raising grounds, where they raised dragons; the land would be perfect in their shared dream. “What took so long? I almost left with out you!” CJ joked, as they headed off to training. “I had a...er...good breakfast.” Ryen replied, with out looking at his friend. “Dang! If you took as long as you did, then it must have been a good one!” “Yeah...” That day, after training, the boys that finished their training, cleaned them selfs up and got dressed for their Ceremony of Apprenticeship, where they would be picked out by older Raisers and taught even farther how to raise dragons, and to find out what kind of dragon they can handle, for some dragons are harder; Earth being the easiest, Water the hardest, and then, of course, Gold. After they all said good-bye to family, which they would never or hardly ever get to see their family again, went with their masters. The training consisted of proper ways of dragon hygiene and caring. Though there was is some training of how to stop a small dragon that was in a rampage, and how to capture a wild dragon. A man by the name of Drasos picked Ryen and CJ (he needed extra hands with the dragons) so, of course, you guessed it, Ryen and CJ were very happy. After riding in a horse drawn carriage, they got to the raising grounds, they found them self’s with mouths wide open; the land was huge, with hundreds of dragons roaming a caged area. “Welcome, boys, to my estate. You boys get to sleep on the third floor, wake up is early in the morning and breakfast is either eggs and bacon, or toast. Toast for when we have to get going really fast. We have one dragon that we here at Golden Farms call Goldy Locks because she is a Golden Dragon as you can tell from her name, we also have 50 Fire Dragons, 60 Earth Dragons, 40 Wind Dragons and 20 Water Dragons. Dinner is after all the chores are done, lunch at mid-day. We have other helpers here, but they take care of livestock. We will go and get you a key to the house and the room, and then we will go back to the training ground and get your stuff. Oh, and you get an allowance of 10 bronze a week, you may go into town and spend it as you please so long as you are back in time to finish your chores. We have stationary so you can write to your families.” Drasos explained as they walked in the large double-doors to the house. Drasos continued “Your chores are to clean and groom the dragons. If we have troubles with one, then you guys are the first to go and get things under control.” Now, grooming and cleaning dragons doesn't sound like much, but its: you have to wash the scales, then scrub the feet and then you have to brush the teeth. Yeah, the large 6 inch to 1foot teeth. After the chores were done, Ryen and CJ went to mail letters to family. After a week or so of chores, something happened, something neither Ryen nor CJ expected, Drasos gave Ryen and CJ each a dragon egg. So now the boys had eggs to take care of, but the thing is; is that dragon eggs take a very long time to hatch. But Ryen and CJ waited all the same. And after a year or so, the eggs started to wiggle every once in a while. That may not sound important, but it is very important, for if the egg doesn’t wiggle after a year, then the dragon baby is, most likely, dead, and that is a very bad thing. CJ and Ryen did chores all the time. They also sent out letters to family, went on trips and often played games with the other helpers on Golden Farms. Their favorite game that the helpers had come up with years before Ryen and CJ had ever heard of Golden Farms was called Dragon Hopping. It was dangerous, but fun. They way it was played was you would jump in front of a dragon, and run to another one before the dragon got you. The dragons knew better than to step on the players, but the dragons knew how to have fun of their own. Then after a few more months, the eggs started to crack, and that takes a few weeks for the eggs to fully crack, and the baby dragon to be born. CJ kept leaving his egg by the fire, in hopes that it would become a Fire Dragon, and Ryen never let his egg out of his sight. After a week they took the diamond shaped stones and held them near the eggs to see what would happen. CJ’s stone glowed a bright red, meaning Fire, Ryens on the other hand, the stone didn’t change. After he talked to Drasos on this, he found out that if the stone didn’t glow a color, the dragon was either a Golden dragon, or dead, but Ryen didn’t want to believe the dragon was dead, so Ryen named his dragon Sonya and CJ named his Coal.
