A bright light, the strong sensation of magic, the feeling of sadness and remorse. Faith woke with a start from sleep, her heart pounding, the memories of the night’s dreams gone in a moment. Feeling dampness on her face she wondered if it had rained. Touching her hair lightly she felt that it was dry. Her hand traveled down from her head to her face lingering on her cheek, had she been crying? Absent-mindedly she looked around the silent forest of Du Welvarden wondering what to do for the day. Finally getting up she started her daily routine. She bathed, clothed and ate the last bit of her stored food. Only once Faith had finished going around her daily business sitting alone in the forest. There in the silence did the feeling come to her, releasing what she had been trying to avoid. This sensation flooded over her and ended as a tugging in the pit of her stomach. The feeling made her want to travel; it was as if she had an internal compass telling her where to go. She had ignored it many times before but now it was unbearable. Faith’s hands gripped her stomach tightly, her entire body trembling. She had to go, it was too much. Gathering her meager belongings she left her home not looking back once.
She had been traveling for days, the sensation softening into a soft pull. Confusion clouded her thoughts as she walked on. Why had she left, she loved her home, why? She wanted to go back but she knew that it was impossible. Something was warning her that wouldn’t happen for a long wile. She didn’t want that. Faith’s first encounter with a human had gone horribly. She had wandered for days before coming upon the outskirts of a town. The first building she had walked upon was small farm. Luckily enough there were only few people there, a farmer and his wife. Her mind stretched out easily absorbing their minds. Faith’s confusion deepened as she realized the complexity of a humans mind. She had only dealt with animals previously, she wasn’t even award that humans excised until now. The farmers wife walked outside to see a young girl standing in the middle of her field, walking closer she saw that it was not a girl at all. Faith stumbled backward falling out of her trance as the woman screamed seeing her wings and scales. Quickly as if on instinct Faith yelled “Stop” her voice coming out as a mesmerizing command. The woman shut her mouth. As the woman was frozen Faith walked up to compare herself with her. Wings were definitely abnormal, and so were the scales under her eyes. The woman moved slightly and Faith ran off into the barn hiding. Walking back into her house the farmers wife felt an odd sense of urgency, was she forgetting to do something? Nighttime fell and a new day came. The farmer and his wife went off to town for a day of shopping. Faith hurried in to the house and grabbed a two big cloak. Slipping it on she was satisfied with how it hid her wings. She next rubbed mud onto her face hiding the scales under her eyes. That would do.
Faith had fallen into the pace of things, she learned how to disguise herself, forage, and how to stay out of trouble. Now she stood in front of her final destination. Uru'baen. As she had traveled Faith had started conversations and read minds. Piecing together the story she learned of Eragon and his quest. Uru'baen had was now an important city, and Faith guessed that is where she was headed. Looking up at the stone walls she walked up to the gate and entered. She looked around at the city bewildered. That was it. The sensation that had non stop drove her to Uru'baen was now gone, no further instruction. "This cant be! I've come all this way only to find this!" she muttered angrily, forgetting that there were many listening ears around her. She realized how crazy she must look and slipped off in to the shadows to compose herself before setting back out. Deciding on a course of action Faith wanted to find someone to help her, maybe someone with ties to the old Varden. She would just have to look around.

Rixen strolled out of his mansion casually but speedily. He reached out with his mind, enjoying the feeling of power and invincibility. He suddenly froze on the spot, he bumped into something with his mind. It definitely was not normal and was much better defended than most others he had encountered. He followed the consciousness to the outer wall of Illrea He scanned the shadows and there, draped in a cloak was a girl looking no more than fifteen, looking very confusedly and somewhat angrily at the vast city. She might be useful. Another spirit in the back of Rixen's head reminded him. It was right. With a mind as strong as this, she could obviously do magic. Still walking smoothly, walked to the child in plain view to avoid startling her before stopping and bowing low to her. "Greetings, my young friend. What might you be doing next to the outer wall where all the beggars are? You are too pretty of a girl for that. Would you like to join me for a meal and some clothes shopping afterwards? You look like you might need some new clothes."

As Faith walked around the city she felt a mind reaching out to hers. She immediately cloaked her mind any traces winking out of existence. She spotted a figure approaching and realized that they had been the ones reaching out. Yet again Faith could not read the persons mind, she could only pick up their basic thoughts. At first she sensed curiosity then smugness. Now that the person was fully in Faiths view Faith watched him trying to decided who he was and what he wanted. She raised her eyebrows in surprise at his smooth appearance and introduction. From they way he looked and the many emotions jumbled together in his mind Faith assumed he was a Shade and immediately wanted to stay away. Everything she had learned and heard on her travels warned her to. "But maybe he's the reason i'm here." Faith though realizing. "Pretty I may be but not in this condition," she said accepting the fact that many days of travel had worn her.She skipped his question as to why she was here and continued on. "A meal sound nice and I only need to wash my clothes, I have an extra pair in my bag." She told the Shade deciding to stay and talk, she couldn't have traveled all this way for nothing.

"Very well, young lady. Let us be on our way." Rixen held out a hand to help the creature up. "Oh. Im sorry. I forgot to introduce myself. My title is Lord Rixen but my friends call me Rixen so please do." (Please introduce yourself. I dont want to call her a 'creature' any more than I have to.

((haha yeah, people usually assume she is human))
Faith didn't make a move to grab his hand, instead she dusted off her cloak. She nodded at his introduction waiting to make her own. "I wish I could say pleasure to meet you Rixen but I don't know you well enough. Lets hope you make a good impression," she said smiling slightly, she was only partially joking. "You can call me Faith." she concluded. His name added to Faith's suspicion that he was a Shade making his company somewhat dubious. A good meal or two would do her good, she could only hope that Rixen was also what she was looking for.

Rixen smiled at the attitude and led the way through the well organised streets of Illrea. He sometimes paused to greet some friends and introduced Faith to them. Rixen first led Faith into an expensive clothes shop, the kindly old clothes maker sat behind a sewing machine with needles in her mouth. Instead of ordering clothes for himself, he told Faith to get two pairs of comfortable clothes.

Ragdar strolled through the streets of Uru'baen, more at ease than ever before. Back when his adoptive father had ruled he was, at first, his loyal son and agent. About a year after, however, he had fled. He realized he wasn't cut out for it. He realized he couldn't look the other way from peoples' suffering anymore. Fleeing had been quite the accomplishment. He had had Raz'acs and Shades hunting him day and night. His two Eldunari and Lenora had struggled to keep up with the fresh stream of bull sent after them. Now, with his old father dead, he could enjoy himself. He didn't have to avoid the cities anymore. Lenora could fly in plain sight and not worry about it. No longer was he forced to hide his more pointed ears. Years of being a Rider had brushed up on him, making him a lot more Elvish in appearance. Years he had spent in hiding, training in the Fire Citadel. He had rose to become one of the most prominent Riders in the Fire Branch, his power growing, further magnified by his two Eldunari.
"Little one.. I feel a Shade in the area. Be careful. The Empire and its tyranny may be gone, but Shades remain Shades. Be careful." he felt Lenora brushing his mind. He shrugged her off. He knew she was right, but after all his training, Shades had become the least of his worries.
Looking down at himself, he realized he should really brush up on "fashion" as it were. His clothes had worn out over the years he had spent fleeing the Empire and training. Normally he'd just wear armor above it, that way it proved effective in two ways. Firstly it would provide him with protection. Secondly it would provide him with some clothes to wear. Walking into a fancier clothing shop, he stopped. Right there in front of him was a Shade. Normally people wouldn't be able to notice it, but he could. His mind, wandering around, more a reflex now, had picked up on the Shades' darkness. He noticed with the man was a woman, seeming quite beautiful despite her more ragged clothing. He approached the duo, hand hovering near his swords' handle. He smiled at them, his red eyes glistening as he said, "Good day to the both of you. How may I help you?" he hoped they'd mistake him for one of the employees. Lenora reached out with her mind to the woman, brushing up on her mind and said, "Ma'am, you need to be careful. The man next to you is a Shade. The man in front of you is my Rider, Ragdar. He's there to help if you need it."

Faith followed Rixen trailing slightly behind. Faith nodded politely at each introduction saying nothing. Instead she watched and listened, taking in as much information as possible. Faith spotted the shop and paused wondering if she should remind him that she didn't need clothes. She decided to say nothing and followed him in.She did a quick sweep of the room and saw that the store was fairly fancy and seemingly empty. Not my style but free clothes can always be put to use she though resisting the urge to shrug. "This place is pretty empty for such a nice store." She commented now really looking around. She bit her tongue as a man walked in. She didn't particularly care that there was another person, instead she noticed how strong he was mentally and how there was another strong mind with him. She could have dealt with the shade if necessary, not easily but she could do it. With the two others she didn't stand a chance. Her suspicion only deepened as the man approached acting as an employee. She was tempted to call him out but a voice in her mind stopped her. She froze listening quietly. I'm sure i'm fine but... Faith didn't finish her sentence. Instead she began to think. Why was she here, what caused her to travel all this way, and what was she supposed to do now. She began to have second thoughts about traveling with a shade. I shouldn't have been so naive to follow the first person I met here. She scolded herself forgetting Lenora was listening.

Rixen flashed an angry glare at the intruder. "Yes, I am a Shade. Do you have a problem with that? I have walked to the ends of this world and in the end, do you think you and I are different? You have dreams just as bad as mine but the difference is. I have to power to fulfill my dreams. You humans committed crimes in war far worse than what I did but your racism has led you to believe YOU doing it is alright whereas what I do is always wrong. Well, I have lived a very long time. I have watched the Empire rise and fall and it has changed me. I no longer want to hurt people. There are better ways to gain control." He let his eyes bore into the intruder before looking back towards Faith. Hopefully she hasnt been swayed by the fact that he is a Shade. "Faith. Would you like to work for me? You have potential. By working for me, you will be free to do whatever you would like most of the time but when I call upon you, you will come to me." He untied his coin purse and tossed it to her. "In there is fifty cowns. You will get two hundred times that per season if you work for me. Kepp that in mind."

Ragdar felt himself snap at the Shade. He bore no love for the Shades. After all, his training had been more or less headed by them. Remembering those painful details bore through him. It's not something you could quite forget in an instant. Even now, after many years, he still remembered them. Though that wasn't what made him snap. No. This Shade simply didn't know his place. Stepping forward, a dangerous gleam in his red eyes as his Eldunari woke, he stood face to face with the Shade and said, "I've left those dreams far behind me along with the many souls that paid for those conceited dreams. Another thing - you mistaken me. I never said I didn't do anything wrong. Hell, I may have done worse things in my shorter life than you have in your longer life. Would you like to know why that is, though?" his voice filled with fiery anger and barely contained rage as he stepped further, put his lips next to the Shade's ears and whispered ever so lightly, "Because I have the power to burn them beneath me."
"Ragdar! Calm down, damn it. The last thing this city needs is for you to skirmish with a Shade. For now, focus on making sure that Shade doesn't supplement any favors." he heard Lenora shout at him through their link. Composing himself ever so slightly, Ragdar returned to a normal posture.
Plucking the purse out from the air he handed it back to the Shade - with a slight bit of force, stating, "You should keep your purse with you until the recipient agrees to your terms or declines. Polite manners, not that you'd know any." his voice fueled by fiery rage.
Lenora caught up on Faith as she thought through it all. "Don't worry, Ragdar can help you with whatever you may need. Though it's your decision in the end whether to work for this Shade or not, I'd strongly recommend against it. You'd be at his beck and call, and who knows what is on the opposite side of that call? If it's money you need, Ragdar can help." she said to Faith, her voice gentle and not anything like Ragdar's.
Putting his hands on his hips, Ragdar stared straight at Faith, his piercing red eyes looking as if they could see right through her. "Your call. You heard Lenora, though. Just something to keep in mind." he told her, his voice a lot gentler now that he wasn't talking with the Shade.

Faith watched the both of them with eyebrows raised. "Are you done?" she asked not bothering to hide her annoyance. "Both of you have to be aware that there is hate for bother Riders and Shades." she said pointedly looking at both of them. "If anything you guys should be more accepting of each other. Past hurts are just that, in the past." I would know and I can understand. It is difficult to move on but I've been forced to. As should you. Her voice was laced with empathy as she talked into Ragdars mind understanding completely. His emotions swirled around his mind for all to see. Her understanding look turned into a glare as he took the coins but it didn't particularly matter."I could get by without money if I wanted to and I have ways to acquire money if need be. Having a nice supply of cash is useful but unnecessary." Faith wasn't afraid to look anyone in the eye, so she looked at Rixen equally. "I have all the freedom in the world, if I ever worked for you I would expect that not to change," her gaze shifted over to Ragdar. Meeting his gaze unwavering she continued on "Rixen my answer all depends on what would I be doing exactly?" She asked him not completely shutting him down. I know the dangers, if he really dose want my assistance he will let me search his mind. I doubt it will come to that though. She told Lenora mentally. She made sure to keep Ragdar out of the conversation not wanting his biased opinion in the conversation.

Rixen kept his cool after Radgar's rant. He wouldn't want to fight just yet but if he was going to continue to be rude, Rixen might just have to teach him a lesson of pain. He felt another mind touch Faith. Probably this intruder's dragon. Stupid meddling things, dragons. He traced the mind, ready to attack it if he felt the slightest provocation from it. Before he could do anything, Faith stepped forward and delivered her own unexpected speech. Her attitude impressed Rixen. She was standing up, unarmed and scolding two men, both older than her, both stronger, both armed. He had to admire that spirit. Ignoring Radgar, he answered Faith "You will be doing anything from assassinations to patrolling to scouting. Am I right to assume that you can and will take lives? It wont be common but it will come along some time. "

Giving a disgusted "tch" Ragdar turned his fiery gaze to the Shade. Some time? More like every other day. Faith may had gotten the wrong idea about him due to what he had said and how he said it, but he understood Shades probably more than almost anyone out there. After all, his mentors had been Shades. The only two kind of people to ever teach him combat among other things were Shades and a diabolic monster - Galbatorix, his adoptive father.
Meeting Faith's determined gaze, Ragdar replied, finally having calmed down, "Believe me when I say few people harbor love for me anymore after all I've done. Again believe me when I say Shades are worse. I was taught by only two people - Shades and a monster - my adoptive father, Galbatorix. The Shades who taught me gave me some knowledge of the Ancient Language, about 10 minutes of practice between Lenora and I, then he would attack stating that we do or die." stopping for a moment, he remembered the first Shade to mentor him. It had only lasted about five minutes, skirmishing with him. In the end he ended up running him through his heart after he inflicted a slight wound on Lenora. Remembering those hate filled days, he shut his eyes for a moment.
Snapping back to the present, he felt the Shade's mind wander toward Lenora. Immediately he asked Fundor and Jura to back the two of them up. Alone he and Lenora could take the Shade. With Fundor and Jura the Shade may as well not even be there. "Don't be rash Ragdar. Try to get on her good side. You know just as well as I do how bad it would be for someone to end up working under a Shade." he heard Lenora talk to him, her voice gentle.
She sent him relaxing and soothing thoughts, making him sigh in satisfaction. With a slight smile on his face for the first time, he told Faith, not bothering with Rixen anymore, "In all it's up to you. Though I must warn you; if you decide to consent and murders take place, I will come to find the both of you. Not as the man you see now, but as the Fire Branch's Elder." he tried to make sure she realize it wasn't a threat, but rather him hoping she wouldn't stoop so low as to kill people for a man just for money. If it was true and she could make her own money, she probably wouldn't.
When you die, your world ends. The world may go on, but in your eyes, the world ends with you.

Faith nodded as Ragdar explained his training. She was unfazed by the fact that he was Galbatorix's adopted son instead understanding his struggle. "Traveling here had mostly been situations like that. You make the right choices you live. If you don't and you die, simple really. Believe me when I say a young girl traveling on her own attracts lots of unwanted attention." She shrugged knowing how hard and cruel life could be. Yet again Ragdar managed to gain her empathy and annoy her at the same time. She didn't even bother to hide the look of offence on her face at Ragdar's 'persuasion'. "As Rixen said I am very capable of killing. But would I? No. It would only happen in self defense." She snapped. Only after she had said that did Faith realize that was not true. She would happily kill any of those psychos who roam Alagaesia spreading violence and terror. Faith had realized that she would most likely become one of those people if she joined Rixen. She warily put up all her mental defenses, scared that when she turned Rixen down he would retaliate. To both of the people in the room it would look as if she was there but where you could usually sense her mind it would be blank space. It was a talent she had possessed since she was young and it came as second nature. She now looked over at Rixen satisfied she was somewhat safe. "Rixen, I don't like killing with out reason and belonging to someone doesn't really appeal to me. I'm going to have to say no to your offer. Thank you for giving me a chance." She said politely, she smiled at the last part trying to show she was genuine with her words. She still somewhat pissed at Ragdar though she knew he had mostly good intentions. She stood between the two awkwardly, the tension in the room uncomfortable.

Rixen smiled as Ragdar described his experience with a Shade. Sounds about right. Shades are terrible at training people and the people they train dont last for more than a few days at most. "Did you enjoy what my brethren do to you? Do you still remember the feeling of cold steel sliding into you?" Rixen asked, still smiling, just to anger Ragdar even more and tell more secrets. Then Faith declined his offer. Dammit. Oh well. There are still other options. Rixen ran a hand through his hair and sighed. "You just just considered one of the possibilities. I wont force you to do anything you are not comfortable doing. You could also scout for me. If not, tell me what you want to do and we'll see."

Very mature Faith thought sarcastically as she heard Rixen's taunting. She wound have talked out loud but she didn't want to start anything. She listened quietly to Rixen's offer still having doubts. "I just want to help people," she said sighing and looking at the ground "though i'm sure if I worked for you I would instead hurt them." Faith spoke her thoughts aloud looking up at Rixen again. "I've tried to keep an open mind about you, about Shades, but you keep confirming everything bad about them." Faith held up a hand indicating for him to stay quiet.. "Before you go off ranting about how I haven't seen anything yet, keep in mind that you don't know me. You don't know what I know or what I've seen." Though she hadn't dealt with Shades before, she knew from others how wicked they could be and she knew how Rixen wasn't all that innocent.
