this is the book i am earnestly working on!
Chapter one: A Destined Meeting
Emily moved with haste as she carried the water buckets up the steep, grassy hill to her small house. She had lived alone now for 3 years after her aunt and uncles death and was already making a living for herself as the inns assistant. She still could not rid the painful thoughts of her past, and they haunted her every night. Why could she not forget? why did they haunt her so?
Emily pushed away the cloth that hung over a hole in her house that was supposed to be a door. She cringed as blackness engulfed her, making her loose her sight. She moved slowly towards the table, trying ever so carefully not to trip over any clutter that might be on the ground. She felt herself run into the table, water dripping from her buckets. She set them down gently and reached for the amp that she always kept within reach. As her fingers made contacted, shivering from the cold bronze, she reached forward and grasped it. bringing it towards herself, she pulled out a match and lit the lamp on the inside, and the light casted away the shadows.
Emily pulled up a chair from the corner and practically fell into the chair. Her black curls jumbled around her face. She sighed as she looked towards the left wall, a picture of herself, her mother and her father. She took in a breath, held it, then let it out. She teared her eyes away from the picture, it was to painful, and she could not bare it. She got up from the wooden chair, pushing it back some, and walked towards the door. She moved the cloth away and stepped outside, the sky was dim with dusk approaching. She walked slowly down the hill she rushed up only moments ago. The breeze had picked up, and it looked that there would be a thunder storm, 'Great, just great." Emily moaned as she started down the hill, her hair was blowing ageist her face with force. She knew she had to get more water before it started raining. Her steps quickened as the rain started to fall in small droplets. She hurried towards the well, but the rain was falling steadily now.
She sighed as she stood at the bottom of the hill, her clothes soaked to the bone. Her teeth where chattering, and her body shook all over. Her black eyes looked around, the rain blocking the view in front of her. She let out a groan, it was getting colder and colder by the minute. She shook her head and looked towards the hill, now a heaping pile of mud and water, 'Great..."She muttered. she hated this freak storm.
And she hated the rain.
It was raining when her parents died.
Emily could not see two inches in front of her own face, the rain was so thick. She was shivering, her fingers where going numb. She needed someplace to wait out the storm, since trudging up the hill would just make it worse. She spotted a small band of something dark, and she remembered that was where she planted some trees a few years back.
She started to move towards the trees when she heard a rumbling. thinking it was just thunder, she started moving again. Then, as clear as day, she heard a roar coming from the trees. She didn't know why, but she started to run towards the trees, wanting to help whatever creature was there in distress. But somehow she knew, just by her instinct, that the poor creature needing help was already dead, and she knew at what feet the dead animal laid by.
I'm insane she started thinking as she moved into the thicket of trees. She had not remembered planting this many, but some of the local pines had found their ways into her small place she called sanctuary.
Her feet where silent as she made her way through the bushes and tree branches that had fallen over the years. She listened, listened for anything. she could feel her heart pounding ageist her chest, wanting to burst out and explode. She tried to keep from trembling, but she knew she was close to whatever it was that had nestled itself in her forest, eating her animals, and making a ruckus. She could smell blood, hear chewing, and bones cracking. She shuddered. whatever was here was also big, very big.
Anger soared through Emily as she rushed towards the noises, indicated a feast. Her foot-falls where light, except for the like snap of twigs that where in her way. She didn't really want to know what was here, but she had to, otherwise more animals would die, and she could not bare that.
She saw a log up ahead, that led into a clearing she had always kept for picnics. She could hear bones being crushed between the jaws of some animal. She started running faster as she neared the log. Then, in one, smooth motion, she leaped over the log and tumbled into the clearing. First, her foot nicked the log and sent her face into the ground. Second, she found herself rolling, all there while hearing a rushing sound, claws scrapping on dead pine-needles. She felt herself crash into something hard. Her vision swiveled as she gazed up. She was lying next to something with blood on it. Then her vision finally cleared, and she let out a shriek.
She stood right under a dragon, blacker then anything she had ever seen.
And then she fainted
Emily opened her eyes slightly. How long had she been out? she wondered. Her head felt like it had been hit by a hammer, or something as strong. She kept her gaze towards the ground, until a strong, deep voice sounded itself "You okay?" the voice had inquired. Her gaze shot behind her, and she gasp. not ten inches from her face, a large, black face stared at her, His eyes held concern.
She let out a little scream and backed up, only to back into something warm, and very hard. The head moved towards her, and her breath got caught in her throat. "Hey, it's okay. i wont hurt you." The deep voice, belonging to the dragon, was kind and sincere. She found herself reaching out her hand, but drew it back quickly when the dragon moved near it. His eyes flashed anger, irritation, and then understanding. Emily wanted to scream for help, but found her voice had left her. She stared silently into those big, dark eyes. They held kindness and a slight temper, as if daring her to speak disrespectfully to him. She just stared into his face, her mouth almost hung open. She had never been this close to a dragon in years, and she was frightened. She didn't want to be, but watching her parents killed in front of her had made her skittish of dragons. Then watching everyone else she was related to die was just to much to handle. And now here she was, sitting at the mercy of some three thousand pounds of beast, teeth and claw. She glanced away for a moment, looking towards the sky that now held sunshine. She heard the beast shift and brought her attention straight back to the dragon.
The dragon smiled, or as close as a smile as you could get with pointy, silver teeth. She shied away as his head moved towards her. Then she felt a warm breath. Her eyes where wide with shock. Had he just done what others only dreamed would happen to them? She let out a short, but loud scream. She was moving to her feet so fast that the blood that had settled while she sat ran straight to her head, clouding her vision a little. The dragon recoiled his neck and backed away as Emily burst in the other direction. She stood and watched the dragon carefully, not sure if she should yell, scream or just run. But running would not do anything because the dragon could find her within the hour. Screaming or yelling would not solve this either. So she just stood.
The dragon looked confused, "Are you alright?" The dragon asked, his voice now a little childish, not at all like the deep, strong voice she heard before. She shook her head. She was..how would she put it? Angry, irritated, amused, sad and a whole lot of things she didn't care to look in to. Right now she focused on her anger. She stared the dragon right on, prepared to give a tongue lashing. But she looked into the dragons large, sad eyes, and her anger melted away. She tried a smile, but the smile would not come forth.
"I'm sorry..." She said in a sad voice. She didn't want to hurt the dragon, she was just surprised, and angry. And... she shook her head, then let it go limp. no need to get into all this now. Besides, she had to get to the village soon or the people would worry again. She looked up at the dragon to see anger, frustration, and confusion. She gasped and backed up, but the dragon came closer.
"You little...ugh!" The dragon tossed his head and roared. Then, locking his eyes back on Emily, he went into a blind rage."Some one gives you a gift, and you think its a curse. You ungrateful, little meat puppet.." He stepped towards her. Emily looked at him, confused. Did he think it was a gift? "Surely you are mad..." She shook her head. She didn't this at all. The dragon's rage faded, and a small grin, or a snarl, tugged at his mouth, "Maybe i should refresh your mind on what i just did. I have chosen you to be my rider. You either take it or be eaten, okay?" Emily frowned, she knew very well what would happen, 'Do i have a choice?" She muttered. of course she didn't have a choice, unless death appealed to her, which it didn't.
The dragon grinned, "I know your Emily Drako. I know your parents died under a dragons hand. i also know your whole family died because of dragons. and that is why i chose you." Emily shook her head, "Why me? there are millions of other people just waiting for this......And how do you know so much about me? I don't even know anything about you, other then your a dragon, and your a male."
The dragon's mouth spread into an all-out smile, or something of that nature. It made Emily stiffen, "My name is Void. i am, as you put it, a dragon who is male. I'm young, though, and i have been watching you for years." Emily almost ran when the dragon moved towards her, but not out of anger. The dragons' eyes danced with amusement as Emily tried walking back wards, but his tail moved in back of her, cutting her off from moving. The dragon got closer, until she almost stood under him. He brought his head in front of her face and blew. She only blinked. She heard his let out another breath of air, this time a little hotter. And she growled and said, "Fine."
The dragon smiled and drew away, "And just so you know, please call me Void, like i said my name was." Emily let out a long, controlled breath. She was shaking, but not because she was cold. No, she was afraid of what would happen if she had said no. Coming this close to death scared her out of her wits. She lost her eyes for a moment, realizing that she had to say the Oath. She sighed, "I promise to trust My dragon no matter the cost.I promise to live my life for my dragons comfort, happiness, and be gentle. For my dragon will also do the same.I promise to never betray the trust my dragon offers, on penalty of death." She cringed on th last words i don't want to die... She thought to herself. But what choice did she have? It's not like she could just run, for she knew the dragon would find her. Dragon, the word made Emily shiver. She was now bound to a dragon like others before her had, "Looks like my family's gonna die out after all..." Void looked at her sharply, "I wont kill you if you just trust me." Emily let a bitter laugh fall from her lips. Did he think she would ever trust him, 'id rather die.." She sneered the dragon. Voids eyes turned fiery"That can be arranged..." Void extended his neck and snapped at Emily. Emily let out a small scream and rolled out of the way. But Void was fast and got her on the leg. He pulled her up and threw her into the air. Emily screamed, it was not the simple act of being thrown, it was the fact that her leg was unharmed. Was he playing with her? Did he think it was funny to wave her around the air like a sock puppet? She felt Voids jaws clamp on the nap of her dress, and put her gently down, laughter danced around his black eyes, "That was fun, was it not?" She was annoyed by the question. Of course it was not fun, but she would not risk his anger again, "Sure..." She said with a shrug, but she was shaking from head to toe.
Void let out a laughter-like roar. It was enchanting to hear, And Emily almost forgot all dragons could enchant you into their little scams by laughing. Or singing, which was more enchanting. Emily shook her head, 'I need to go now..." She didn't finish because she was lifted up into the air and placed between the spot in the neck and the wings. She let out a shriek, but Void justed laughed, "Here we go!" Void yelled loud enough to be heard for a few miles. Emily instinctively leaned forward and wrapped her arms around Voids neck as she felt him zip into the air.
She would have fainted if she was not in danger of falling to her death. She noticed though, with slight anger, that Void was enjoying himself way to much at her expense. He glided and zipped through trees, much to Emily's dismay, too.
She felt Him steady out, and sighed with relief. She felt his head tilt slightly downward. She leaned toward her left and gasped. They where heading straight for the village. She went pale. What would they think? Would they accept this, or be angry with her for agreeing. They would call hers selfish and say that she had brought evil upon them. Then kick her out of the village. "Mister dragon thing! don't go toward the village!" She was relieved when he turned sharply to the left, averting the village. "Why?" he asked with concern. Emily sighed and yelled back, "If they see you, they might kill you." She saw him tilt his head to look at her, recognition was all over his face. "Okay, then we go straight for the council." The color drained from her face. How could she have forgotten? The Council was the most important group of dragons and riders the world has even known, 'You mean, the Council of Dragons?" Annoyance crossed Voids features, "No, the council of corn. Yes the council of dragons!" Emily growled, "Oh, don't get your scales in a ruffle." That seemed to sober Voids mood. And she was glad.
Emily gazed up at the sky. it was black with small sparkles of light. She had never been this close to stars before, and it was exhilarated. She glanced down towards the earth, thousands of feet below. She felt a cool breeze as Void glided smoothly across the sky. She had almost forgotten about the village, the inn, and the man who liked her. She shook her head and smiled. She didn't care for the man. Maybe being chosen was a blessing, or at least a little one. She watched as Void started to go downward, circling like a falcon for its prey. Emily jittered with nervous energy. She didn't know if she liked going down thousands and thousands of feet, with the speed of a eagle flying down, but they where as quiet as owls.
Emily watched as they started to glide down into trees. Voids tail snapping a few of their tops off. Emily really didn't like this, and she knew she would have to deal with it until the Council. She noticed the ground was close now. A second later she felt herself shoot forward, tumbling over Voids neck and slid off the side. Emily coughed and shuttered, but Void stood and gave a laugh-like roar, shaking the trees. She felt her blood boil with anger as she picked herself up. She stood and turned toward Void, glaring at him, "Oh. So you think it's funny? Well let me tell you, it is not funny!" She had noticed she had screamed. She also noticed Void looked hurt. Emily let out a sigh, "Void..." Before she could apologize, Void had turned around and she stood facing his back. She let her anger return, 'Fine. I can handle this. I don't need you around to be safe here." She turned on her heel and stalked off. She knew she should apologize, but she could not see straight after the flight.
She curled up next to a log. Her back against it and herself in a position where she didn't have to look at Void. She started to feel the pangs of guilt at being so harsh with Void, then not apologizing. She could not get the sad look of Voids face out of her mind, and it was driving her to her limits. She laid down, her head against the soft grass, and feel asleep.
This is the first chapter of my expedition. Im still working on buffing it out though
