The Othes tribe was absolutely shocked at the mysterious birth of the young girl, for Chief Finlock had no conceived her with his wife but the mysterious mistress he had taken on their most recent raids on the neighboring tribes. The mysterious mistress was an elf, who had given her life as an elf up to be amongst mortal men. Finlock was pressured to destroy the baby girl by the elders of the tribe for conceiving a child with anyone but your wife was considered a sin in the tribe. Finlock was debating his position when the tribe’s priest proclaimed a prophecy about the babe. “She will lead our people in the most dangerous of wars, and her name shall be written in the stars. She will be known for her wrath and her strength. She will be the Devil’s Wrath.”
Artemis’ life was spared that day, but never knew her elven mother. Artemis grew up knowing that she was part elf, her step-mother wouldn’t let her forget it. She shunned Artemis liked the plague often leaving her alone for days while smother her older brother, Kade, with all the attention. But Artemis was favored by her father. He took her everywhere, to every battle meeting, to every raid, to every meeting of the elders. Artemis learned at an early age everything she needed to know to be chief. She even was taught healing magic by the tribes healers, and taught everything she needed to know about war and fighting from the War Lords. At the age of 16 she and her brother became War Lords themselves and were sent on raid on a nearby slaver’s camp.
The raid was bloody and fierce, and her father was in charge but he allowed Kade to make the decisions and hewas a bad leader and the raid turned against the Othes tribe. Artemis watched her brother and father be killed before her eyes. But Artemis took the reins and with her knowledge and strategy, even after suffering many casualties, the Othes tribe won the battle. And Artemis was made chief immediately and given the name “Amarthanel” which meant battle in their language. She was well liked and loved by her people and by the age of 20 was considered the greatest of the Chiefs of the Othes.
But Artemis was not content with staying in the desert, leading small petty raids. She wished for big battles and wars. When she was 21 the Empire came and raided her people, killing many. Murdering, slaughtering, kidnapping, men, women and children. Brilliant of leader she was, Artemis could not defeat the Empire. She fled with the survivors of her tribe to the safe hold of the Varden in the Beor Mountains.
Artemis was brought before the Council of Elders and Ajihad, and she recounted the story and plight of her tribe. The Varden had already begun to hear murmurs of the young Chief’s brilliance in battle and with the weapon. It wasn’t until the Battle of Farthen Dur when Artemis led her tribe into slaughtering many Kull and Urgals, did the Varden see her true worth to them. One of the first thing Nasuada did as new leader of the Varden was make Artemis a Commander of the 5th Legion, a mix of humans soldiers, dwarves and her own people. Though many supported her rise to power, some of her fellow officers did not like her.
Artemis was asked by Nasuada to remain in Farthen Dur with her legion while the rest of Varden moved to Surda.
