rider of Kamikurai | empire rider
Power. It's what everyone wanted right? His father wanted it to control all those who could use magic and the Varden wanted it for...well he wasn't sure but they were after power. That much he did know. It was obvious from the fighting.
But what about himself? Rerukusu wasn't sure. He needed power to restore his dragon Avendel but did he want it? He just wanted his dragon back, nothing more or at least that's what he kept telling himself. Maybe it was true maybe it wasn't, at the moment it didn't really matter.
Kami was perched on a roof of a large meeting house in Gil'ead. She didn't look happy at all, she almost never was happy. After all how could she be when she knew her rider wanted to kill her in the end. She never had gotten along with him from the beginning, it hadn't even been her choice to hatch for him. She sighed letting a puff of smoke escape her nostrils.
Rerukusu ignored her moodiness and walked into the meeting house. He had come here for one thing along, to collect more power to keep his former dragon alive. Inside was a mass of people laying on the floor. A plague had broken out in Gil'ead leaving many sick. Most of those ill had been brought here for quarantine.
Reru had cast a spell earlier to prevent him or Kami from falling ill. He didn't know if it could effect dragons or not but he wasn't going to take a chance. He didn't know if the plague was lethal but he was going to make it so. He reached out and took the energy from the ill until there was nothing left and they were dead. But he only took from the most ill those who looked like they might have died anyways. No need to draw attention to himself. He stored the energy in the gem on the hilt of his sword.
His excuse for coming here was to pretend he was on a mission of mercy to help heal them. Sure he might heal some but not all. He needed the energy from them.

Aysten was out flying on Sora’s back, He was far from his home, Which he had abandoned several months ago. Ever since Anira had left, Not even leaving a note, Or anything else, Aysten mood had slowly soured, Until once again, The seizures began again, Putting himself on his self destructive path he moped around the house for days at a time, Sometimes staring off into space for hours.
And then Sorra had come to him to suggest they leave behind everything, All the bad memories, All the things that could set Aysten off at a moments notice. And so they had. But The seizures continued.
Now Aysten thought he had something figured out, Before he had been weak, Powerless to do anything but let the woman he had loved waltz over his heart and out of his life, Powerless to stop the seizures from coming to him, And Powerless to stop his own downward spiral.
Now though, Aysten had a entire new outlook on life, Instead of continuing his self destruction, He wanted power, power to make sure that he could have what he wanted in the future, Power not to let others control him, And power to find someone…Someone who would understand.
Letting sorra fly he had no idea they had passed over Gilead, No idea what was below, And No Idea what was about to happen after the pair landed.

rider of Kamikurai | empire rider
Kami glanced up seeing the other dragon and Asyten. She was and Empire dragon but unlike most she and Reru were not sworn to the King. So she had no motivation to report it to her rider or defend the city if the pair were Varden.
But, if she did tell Reru it would stop him from taking energy. It wouldn't be much but it might delay him from killing her in the end. A few vital moments or maybe even a day could give her time to find a way out of this and get away from him.
"Reru, there is another rider and dragon here. I don't know who they are," Kami reported for once sounding almost nice to him.
Reru had been kneeling by an old man who was ill and had just partially healed him. He didn't want to cure them completely, if he did he'd have no reason to stay. He stood up. "So?" he said indifferently looking for the next one he'd partially heal.
"If they are Varden and they did any damage I don't think your father would be happy," she said. While they were not sworn to Galabatorix, the king had punished them before demanding they at least be loyal. Reru sighed. "Fine, let's go. Where are they?" he asked.
"I think they are going to land," Kami reported watching the pair descend somewhat. IT seemed like they would land soon enough. Reru came out of the building and Kami lowered her tail for him. He climbed up it light it was a ladder then moved up to her neck to sit in the saddle. Once he was there Kami took off, purple wings beating hard to gain altitude.
Once airborne she angled for Sora and Astyen. "Who are you?!" Reru shouted in a demanding tone when they were close enough to be heard.

Aysten and sorra landed as soon as the voice was heard, In the distance Aysten realized it was a city and he muttered a curse, He had not wanted to get this close to the empire, Or people at all, People seemed to set off the seizures, And the seizures only made Aysten feel powerless.
Thinking quickly he rolled off of sora’s back and looked up at the dragon and rider who approached them, At least the fight, if one came would be somewhat even, and that was good.
Thinking fast Aysten began to answer the question called.
“We are….Erm…Travelers….Yes….Travelers!” Aysten called back.
Then a cold feeling drifted over his body clutching at his heart, And Aysten soon found it hard to breathe, he realized what was happening but was soon powerless to stop it as the spasm took over him, Memories flashed before his mind, Some true and things he had witnessed, While others false and a result of his overactive imagination. Aysten didn’t feel himself move, But in reality he did Slowly crumpling to the ground before curling into a ball, His fists clenched and his eyes closed shut.
Sora tried to reach him and she thrashed her tail out in anger and distress as her rider was forced to torture himself.
“Aysten!” Went her sad and mournful call, But her rider was deaf to it, As well as the whole world around him.

rider of Kamikurai | empire rider
Reru dismounted Kami and stood near her as Aysten spoke. The other rider sounded uncertain in what he said and Reru didn't believe his words. "Right, and I'm a candle maker," he said sarcastically. He was about to say something more when Aysten crumbled to the ground. He merely raised an eye brow in surprise but did nothing even as Sora was in obvious distress.
Kami was not quite so passive as her rider. She glanced at Reru then to Aysten. They didn't know him at all, but she didn't like to see this. Let alone Sora's distress. She couldn't relate, if it happened to Reru she probably would just leave him since he wanted to kill her. But She knew most rider, dragon pairs were not like her and Reru.
"Reru! Do something!" she pleaded. Reru glanced at her with mild interest. "Why?" he asked. "I don't care about him."
Kami glared at Reru. "Please Reru, look at his dragon," she said. Reru glanced at Sora but seemed still indifferent. Then a thought struck him and he smiled. "If you want me to help him I will but on one condition. You start obeying me, you've been fighting me since the day you hatched," he said.
Kami was not pleased with this but she knew Reru would not offer anything else. "Fine," she said reluctantly. He hadn't made her say it in the ancient language so it wasn't binding. Kami wondered if Reru actually wanted her to fight him.
Reru walked forward and knelt near Aysten. He closed his eyes and started speaking in the ancient language, some words he spoke were unknown to most others as his father had discovered them only recently. But though the words and some magic he tried to sooth Asyten and stop the seizure. Whether it worked was a different matter. The half-elf remained motionless beside the other rider continuously speaking in the ancient tongue.

The seizure stopped suddenly and Aysten found himself in the usual ball, He felt someone nearby but he tuned that out for a moment as his mind was overwhelmed by his dragon.
“Its Ok sora, I’m fine now…I think…” Aysten told her, abit unsure of himself.
“So you say now Aysten…But each time the seizures get worse and worse! Your killing yourself…” Sora told him, her motherly concern over the matter overflowing her.
“Killing myself?! I CANT CONTROL IT SORA! Despite contrary belief I am a victim here you know…If only I had never met Anira..” He responded, His despair overflowing his own mind.
“Don’t say that Aysten…”
“Just leave me alone for now Sora….Please…’
Ayssten responded, Feeling bad about telling off his dragon, But the presence of another person remained and slowly he rolled over, and looked at the man.
“Hello sir, I must thank you for helping me…I guess I’m not powerful enough yet to stop it.”

rider of Kamikurai | empire rider Reru remained by Asyten's side as the seizure stopped. Kami was grateful that her rider had stopped it or well it appeared he had. She had paid a price for it though and hoped she wouldn't regret it though. At least she could break her promise if she needed to and had the chance.
The half-elf rider seemed to smile lightly hearing Kami's thoughts. Of course he wanted her to break her promise the more she fought him the easier his work would be. There had to be suffering on Kami's part for him to have her ready to bring his former dragon back. He didn't let on that he wanted this though, he kept Kami in the dark.
Reru smiled but shook his head when Aysten spoke. "I'm a prince, sir is not really a fitting title," he said. "My name is Prince Rerukusu, son of Galbatorix," he said offering his hand to help Asyten up. "Sometimes you can't stop it alone," he said. "Even so most don't know the words to stop it but I do. But you still didn't answer my question. Who are you? I don't believe you are simply travelers."

Aysten listened to the man as he spoke and a light bulb went off in his head as he realized this man was a prince, Princes had power, And this prince definitely seemed kindly imposed towards him, If he had at least stopped his seizure. But, This prince was familiar, From the time he seizures first happened, When he had first had contact with the empire.
“Ah yes…Prince Rerukusu, I have met you once before…When one of your fathers riders captured me…and….Someone…Close to me…And it was his fault I have become as such, But you wish to know who I am yes? Well in all technicality we are travelers since we are traveling, But if you want to get more specific, I am a Human rider, Trained by elves. I am Aysten Gilanson the last of the teal dragon riders, And she, Is sora, My dragon, the last of the teal dragons.”
Aysten was curious as to what the prince would want with him, The last time they had met he had seemed corgal, if not sympathetic to his plight, But last time they met Aysten didn’t remember a dragon…

rider of Kamikurai | empire rider At Aysten's words he glanced at him with a new interest trying to place where they had met before. As the other man spoke he realized where they had met. At the time he hadn't really cared that much about what was going on. He had been sympathetic in only that he knew what it was like to endure something like that.
"I do recall that meeting, it was brief. I have my own grievances that still haunt me though the person who caused them is now passed on," he said. He gestured at Kami who stood near by. "This is Kami, last time we met I was a former rider. I met Kami only a few months ago," he said. It was clear from his statement and looking at the dragon that Kami was much larger than a few months old. Magically enhanced to a larger size, about double.
"what are you doing here in Gil'ead? There is a plague here at the moment, um you might want to ward yourself from it so you don't catch it as well. Kami and I are here on a mission of mercy to help them," he said. It wasn't really the truth but he wasn't going to say he was here to take advantage and take energy from the sick, killing them.

Aysten frowned as he was asked the question of why he was here, because in truth he didn’t really know. Then he heard of the plague and warded himself and sora after a moments notice, he didn’t know if he dragons could catch plagues, but he didn’t want to find out. Then he spoke while his brain still tried to figure out a answer to the first question.
“Would you like help with the plague? And healing the people there? I’m sure they must be suffering, And two riders can help better than one…” Aysten said before looking at the city on the horizon before he came up with a answer to the first question.
“And…We are here because we are wandering….Sometime ago we abandoned my house, And since then we have been gliding where the winds have taken us…That is why I said we are travelers…”

rider of Kamikurai | empire rider Reru seemed hesitant when Aysten offered to help. If the other rider healed them he wouldn't have a chance to take their energy without drawing attention to himself. "I see, then you do not side with the Varden or my father," he said. As long as they were not with the Varden he didn't really care. If they were he'd have to do something or his father would make him pay for not doing anything. "I have the pla-" he started to say when Kami interrupted him. "Yes please do help. there are many who suffer," she said. Aysten would be more help than her own rider. Reru brought death to them rather than healing them. She despised him doing it but she couldn't stop him.

Aysten nodded his head when his allegiance was taken into question, he had previously been sympathetic to the Varden, But no longer, All they did was bring death to this land and that was something Aysten couldn’t stand.
When Kami told Aysten he should help he nodded his head and pointed back towards the city. “Would you please lead the way?”

rider of Kamikurai | empire rider Reru was satisfied enough with the nod to confirm neither allegiance. As long as Aysten wasn't Varden he doubted his father would care what he did now. Other Empire riders might try to sway him to their side but Reru didn't have time to waste on that.
He glared at Kami once before turning to lead the way in. Why had she had to interrupt and invite Aysten to help? What she had said was true but Reru didn't want his help. He headed back to the main meeting house where most of the ill had been brought. Kami flew back to her perch on top of the building to wait.
Reru pushed open one of the two heavy doors to the meeting hall and walked inside. It was dim and the sick were all over the floors and benches in the room. He immediately reached out and took more energy, killing three people. He doubted Aysten would notice and it would seem like a natural death to most everyone.

Aysten entered the building, Completely unaware to reru’s tampering with the victims, He moved over to the back corner of the room where he noticed a cluster of older people, The group Reru had taken energy from before, And checking there pulses Aysten realized they where dead. Turning around he spoke to Reru.
“This plague must truly be deadly if these people are dropping like flies….Though it seems the younger people are fine…Just the elderly….Strange…” Aysten said before closing the eyes of the dead and moving on to another group, partially healing them so that there bodies could grow a immunity to the plague.
Moving over to another victim he noticed this one was a younger woman, Around the age of 18, She seemed in a pretty bad shape and Aysten set about healing her, offering a kind smile as he did, When he finished he moved to check her pulse to make sure he heart beat was strong.
Then the woman spoke to him.
“Will I be alright Rider?” She asked and Aysten looked up to her , Facing her as he spoke
“Yes, I believe you will b….” Aysten cut himself off as the face of the woman changed and morphed to that of his crush, His body left his control and his hand wrapped around her wrist tightly, Promoting a cry of pain from her, But Aysten heard nothing, His world deaf.
He felt a tear rolling down his face before he spoke, His voice rising as anger took over him, Then the face changed, And it continued changing, To all those he had loved.
“Why couldn’t you just care! Why did you have to sacrifice yourself for me! This….This is all your fault!” Aysten screamed out, His grip tightening on the womans wrist, as she squirmed with all her strength to escape. Then, the moment passed and Aysten returned to the living world, Instantly realsing the grip he healed her wrist and stumbled backwards, Shaking his head as his breath quickened he stumbled out of the building.

rider of Kamikurai | empire rider
Reru watched as Aysten went over to the corner where those he had killed were. He appeared indifferent and didn't give the slightest hint away that it had been his doing. "Yes the plague is quite deadly, the elderly are the weakest ones," he said crouching over a young child and healing him partially. The elderly were weaker than the rest when he had gotten here but the plague was not as deadly as Reru was making it become.
Reru didn't bother to speak to any of those that were ill but healed two of them partially knowing Aysten would probably notice if he didn't. He could sense Kami's displeasure and disgust at what he did but he ignored her and surprisingly she held her tongue and didn't say anything.
The half-elf didn't seem to be paying any attention to Reru until he heard the cry of pain from the woman. Aysten he did not expect to harm any of those here, so why the cry of pain. He stood from where he had been healing a middle aged woman and watched. Anyone else might have stopped it or hurried over to find what was wrong. Reru did not. He stood watching with an eye brow raised curiously. When Aysten screamed out a brief look of sympathy crossed his face. Had Aysten lost someone he loved? Obviously it wasn't his dragon but Reru knew what it was like to loose someone you cared about.
Reru smirked as Aysten ran out. Maybe he had misjudged him. Without a word to those tending the sick he left to follow Aysten. When he caught up to him he stood in silence for a moment. "Aysten?" he said placing a hand on the other man's shoulder. "Who did you loose?" he asked. For once all malice or indifference was gone from his face and seemed sympathetic if not in pain himself remembering when he lost Avendel.

Aysten felt Nausea rising in him as he sat out side, He hadn’t wanted to hurt anyone… This was a different one of his seizures, One that he had never seen before, It brought out the aggression hidden deep beneath the surface of his normally nonchalant self. What made Aysten feel even worse though was the fact that a deep feeling of satisfaction swept over him.
He had the power to inflict pain to those who caused it to him. Shaking his head Aysten silenced the voice that was trying to force those bad thoughts into his head, Or where they truly being forced in? Or had they always been there? Buried beneath the surface…
Aysten was pulled from his internal struggle as he felt the hand on his shoulder, Turning he saw Reru there, His face seemed sympathetic to him, And he sighed as he spoke.
“I lost…Pherhaps the only one I have ever truly Love in my life….Other than Sorra.” Aysten said before taking a deep breath as he dove deeper. “Her name was Alyssa, I grew up with her, Played with her, And…Tip toed around the fact that I loved her…And then a Shade came to the village….Bull ridge…he was searching for something that a varden messenger had brought…One of the soldiers the shade brought with him thought I was the messenger….And shot a arrow at me…I was sure I was dead….I closed my eyes, Only to find no pain…And when I opened them…She was there…Arrow in her chest…She had sacrificed herself to save me…”
Aysten took a deep shuddering breath as he relived the day in his memory, Then he once again heard the voice in his head, The evil voice speaking to him, Trying to persuade his thoughts. ‘She left you alone in the world…Nothing…She is why you are like this now!’ felt his breath quicken and he once again pushed the thought away, and he untightened his fist, Which during that exchange had slowly balled up,

rider of Kamikurai | empire rider Reru listened as Aysten spoke and he lowered his gaze for only a moment. Aysten and he seemed to be a lot alike, both of them had lost someone and both of them suffered from it. Reru had been suffering longer than Aysten had, but the pain never went away no matter how many years, how many decades went by.
"I'm sorry," he said quietly. He wondered if the Shade had been sent by his father, and if he had been would Asyten blame him as a substitute for getting at Galbatorix? Well, actually he doubted that. He had the same hurt and he had never blamed anyone but the one that had killed his dragon.
"I know how you feel. I lost my dragon during the fall of the riders. her heart of hearts was damaged beyond all hope," he said holding out his left hand with the gedwey insignia on it. There was a clear mark of him being a rider but subtle and on close inspection it was clear it was overlapped on a more faint mark. The mark of a rider who had lost his dragon. "Avendel was my dragon...Kami is my second dragon like Shruikan is my father's second dragon," he said. "But those who are dead are not necessarily lost..."
Reru pulled down the neck of his tunic, embedded in his chest near his collar bone was a small crystal. "It's called a cruxis crystal, it acts like a heart of hearts does for a dragon. If I die I would reside in the crystal until I was restored in a new body. It slows your growth, I haven't aged a day since I made it twenty years ago. My dragon's soul is in such a crystal allowing me to restore her by using Kami as a vessel. I don't know if we can find Alyssa, but if a Shade can find her soul I can bind it in a crystal and we could try to restore her. It may take years to find a proper replacement for her though that is if a Shade can even do it," he explained. It felt strange actually speaking about what he was doing he never spoke about this to anyone not even Kami. "Those who do not have the crystal until after they die need constant energy to survive...I'm not here to heal the sick...I'm here to take their energy to sustain Avendel's soul."
He knew this was a risk saying any of this but Aysten was perhaps the only one in all of Alagasia who might understand and help him. Aysten could help Reru revive his dragon and Reru was the only one in all the land who could offer Aysten a chance to get Alyssa back. He wasn't sure a Shade could find the right soul but it was at least a chance, before Aysten and no chance only his grief.

Aysten listened to reru tell his tale, Frowning at points, But overall he was curious…It was finally a possible way for him to get back his beloved, Finally the chance to have a fairy tale ending to a tale wrought with tears. Aysten was very much considering it. But Sora would have nothing of it.
“Aysten! He has killed people! You cant follow him! The dead are not meant to be tampered with!” She cried to him and he looked over at her, A frown crossing his face.
“But…Sora…If we can get Alyssa back…It would be the perfect ending! I would be fine again! We could be a big happy family!” Aysten said, now full under the sway of the eviler half of his mind.
“Aysten…This isn’t you! Your darker…Darker than the man I chose as my rider…” Sora said as she studied aystens mind.
“So you are saying I’m not the man you chose as your rider, You say Im not worthy!” Aysten responded, His mental voice rising.
“No! Aysten you know that’s not what I meant!” He felt her sigh within her mind before continuing. “If you feel you must do this Aysten…By all means do it…Just be careful you don’t lose yourself along the way.” Sora said before withdrawing from Aystens mind.
Turning to reru he nodded his head.
“If you can help me…Or at least try to…I want to take that chance…And I will help you as well…”

rider of Kamikurai | empire rider Reru smiled and said nothing when he realized Sora and Aysten were speaking to each other. While he couldn't hear the conversation he knew that Sora must disagree. Only those who had lost directly understood why he had to do this. He had not thought the dragon would agree. Kami sure didn't. In fact the purple dragon was watching them with interest and he knew she was hoping Aysten would refuse. "Don't you dare say a word Kami," he warned not wanting her to interfere. Aysten was hurt emotionally like Reru was, chances of refusal of the offer were slim.
Reru smiled when Aysten nodded and agreed. "I will try my best to get her back to you. First we need to find a Shade willing to find her...shades are tricky to work with. Our best bet is using one of my father's shades, any other would never help us. We'll have to go to Uru'baen but I'm not leaving until I get enough energy to sustain Avendel," he said gesturing at the meeting hall. "If I'm going to risk going behind my father's back to get you a shade then show me I can trust you," he said. He pointed at the meeting hall. "Transfer the energy to me and I'll transfer it to Avendel's crystal." He wanted Aysten to finish what he had started here. Reru knew Galbatorix wouldn't just tell his shades to help with this...in face Reru didn't want his father to know the full extent of what he was doing.

As Reru told Aysten to go inside and kill the other people he frowned, this he didn’t want to do, But if he could get Alyssa back, he was willing to do it. But once again, Sorra would have none of it.
“AYSTEN! NO! You are not a murderer! Those people in there are helpless! You cant kill them!” She yelled at Aysten, scolding him.
“It isn’t murdering them, This plague would probably kill them anyways, they are in pain, they are suffering! Do you want them to suffer even more?” Aysten retorted to her.
“But they can be saved Aysten! That is your duty as a rider! To protect and help the innocent! If you do this you will be spitting on your vows as a Rider!” Sora responded, Almost begging Aysten not to do this.
“What Vows!? I swore no vows when I became a rider!” Aysten yelled back at her as he walked forward.
“Aysten! If you go in there and kill those people! You will do this trek on your own!” Sora said, pulling her ace card.
This caused Aysten to stop in his tracks and look back at her.
“Sora…You cant…You cant leave me!” Aysten said his mental voice wavering.
‘Oh yes I can Aysten! And I will!” Sora said
Aysten shoke his head and slowly walked into the building, Then instead of killing the people and taking there energy Aysten healed the rest of them before taking some of there energy, Then put them all into a deep sleep to make it seem as if they had died, They would wake up in a few hours fine, Then Aysten gathered the energy he had taken and combined it with Energy he held in a ring on him and transferred it out to Reru. Before Aysten, A bit tired after the magic use Exited the building.
“There…Now lets go…”
