Reru walked through the main gates of Teirm. He hadn't brought any guards with him, he was confident that he didn't need them. he had not brought Avendel with him either he had left her back in Uru'baen to keep the appearance that he might be there still. He knew not everyone was happy with him taking over that province. He'd made no moves to upset anyone yet though, he knew better than to make more enemies before he got a strong hold on his new kingdom.
He headed right for the government section of the city where he knew Clarissa would be. The guards let him in and he went to the room he was told Clarissa was in and knocked on the door. He hadn't seen her since she'd taken Teirm. Aside from Avendel she was the only other person he felt loyal to and even protective of.

Clarissa and Vervada had returned from visiting Aelodil only a couple days ago and so were not too focused on the strength of their minds. Luckily the young lady of Teirm had already placed several wards to warn her when someone was nearing her chambers or her office. So when Rerukusu made his entrance into the sturdy central government building she was quickly stuffing the glove into her desk drawer. She was slightly slower than usual, reminiscing upon her visit with Aelodil, and therefore his glove was still visible when her brother entered her office.
Quickly forcing the blush from her cheeks and putting on an air of authority, Clarissa stood tall. Reru, dear brother, I trust your welcome to my province is very friendly. How is Uru'baen these days? The woman brushed her hair behind her ear and forced her mind to be guarded so she could remember the way Aelodil smiled at her as they parted ways. She couldn't focus upon the current situation and so was not surprised when a girlish giggle escaped her lips quickly followed by a mental reprimand.
Finally Clarissa spoke again, reigning herself in carefully. Brother, I beseech of thee to tell me of thine travels and how thou haveth been faring since Father perished in such a terrible way.

Reru looked at the glove curiously when he caught sight of it, he had no reason to think anything ill of it though. In his mind Clarissa would never hurt him, he didn't even try to read her mind he wouldn't do that to her without reason or invite. "Do we have to be so formal?" he asked her and walked over and embraced her in a hug. Only with her did he ever let his guard down. "I just came to see you not discuss business. Uru'baen is fine, I get the council breathing down my neck all the time though. Travels, besides the nether only to the earth citadel," he said and bit his lip. That had been a stupid move stealing the artifact from them. With little support he couldn't make enemies now. "I can't say I really our father but things didn't turn out the way I'd hoped either," he said. "How have you been?"

(Music by Apocalyptica will be helping me type this post)
Clarissa felt her brother hug her and she almost cried out in anguish. Quickly she turned away and fought the tears from her eyes. Never before had she been torn between two people she cared about. On one hand, Reru was her brother and she didn't want to hurt him, but on the other stood Aelodil who she loved and wanted to support. It was going to be the right thing to do for the people of Teirm. With a heavy heart, Clarissa turned around and felt tears fall from her eyes.
Rerukusu, help me please. I am torn between two people I care about. Either way I choose will lead to losing one or the other. But the decision could mean war and losing myself as well.
Slowly she pulled herself together and then fell apart as Vervada gently started relaying the memories of their meeting with Aelodil to Reru. She couldn't watch her brother as her heart ached to know what to do again.

(that Aelodil and Clarissa was another thread right? I don't remember what it was about. Where is it and I'll read it. I don't know how to reply without knowing the memories Reru got. xP )

Ri'Shei had nothing now the Empire was disbanded. She loathed the lack of a goal, not being able to strive to some greater aim. Her life felt so meaningless without a purpose. Little jobs were not satisfying. She needed to know what she did made a difference to people. Protecting them, keeping order, that sort of thing. There was no way she was going to make a permanent mark catching the odd bandit. What she really needed to stop feeling so lost was a passionate belief to work for.
She knew Clarissa slightly through the Empire, though the Rider had been a much higher rank. With nothing to lose, she had decided to pay her a visit in the hope she might have some worthwhile work to offer. She was admitted into the cluster of houses occupied by rulers and shown to Clarissa's rooms. A guard accompanied her since she was not so well known and looked tall and foreign. He knocked on the door and announced Ri'Shei's presence, but didn't go in. Ri'Shei felt a little anxious hearing a stir inside, Clarissa's animated voice accompanied by another familiar voice.

(I'm assuming Quetzal has no objections, and if you do, Quetzal, then I'll just delete this post and you can go on with life)
Ever since the Empire had disbanded and the more lawful government had taken over the civilization of Alagaesia, meals of raw magic had become a lot harder to come by. The addition of plenty other hungry Mage Hunters definitely didn't make Moratensis' job any easier. As was his usual attire, he wore his tattered, black rags, and atop them a black robe with a cowl that helped him mask his face, something which had become something sought out by bounty hunters. Strapped to his waist was, as usual, Hell Reaver, his sword entrusted to him since his graduation as an official Mage Hunter.
Hearing a whimper, he snapped back to the present, shifting his cold gaze to his soon-to-be most recent victim. The man hadn't done anything wrong that Moratensis knew of. For all he knew, the man was an innocent man. Did that bother him? Slightly. However, he had long ago placed sustaining himself ahead of his honor and ideals. The whimper from the man was due to the multiple different cuts Moratensis had inflicted on him. Licking the blood off his fingers, Moratensis gave him a sly smile and said, "Don't take this personally. You were just the wrong person at the wrong place at the wrong time." before slitting the man's throat quickly, ending his misery, sighing in relief as the energy siphoned into his blade then into him.
Taking his dear time to siphon all the remaining energy from the blood that flooded the room of what he considered a safe house, he didn't notice the Royal Guards that came barging through his door, seeing the scene. One of them yelled at him in too fast a tone for him to make out what he was saying, but judging by his face he wasn't happy. One of them took out some chains, shackling his hands. Moratensis didn't bother trying to stop him. A jail cell was more reliable of a shelter than what he considered as 'home'.
What surprised him was the fact that they took him to the royal estates in Teirm. After an elaborate bob and weave between directions, one of the guards knocked on an especially fancy door before shoving him inside. The guard stood to attention to what Moratensis figured must have been the new Lady of Teirm and began, "Lady Clarissa, here is the Mage Hunter with the bounty on his head. Accused of many different murders and mass murders across the entire of Alagaesia. Your course of action, ma'am?" Moratensis gave a "tsk" in disgust at the formal speech. To hell with that, he didn't have time to waste. Little did he realize who exactly Clarissa or the man with her, Reru, were. Then again, like in most cases, little did he care. If they tried to kill him he'd just book it.

Clarissa was heavily focused upon her brother when a flurry of activity erupted from her wards. So four people approached and two of them were strong enough to pose a threat if treated wrongly. Pushing her own doubts aside, the lady of Teirm grabbed her sword from the sheathe next to her and spoke softly to Rerukusu. We will finish this conversation when there are less ears to overhear. For now just know that I love you brother and that is why I chose to tell you in the first place.
With two long strides, Lady Clarissa yanked open her door and motioned for Ri'Shei to enter. I am deeply sorry Ri'Shei, but it appears a murderer was caught recently. I must deal with him before I address you properly. Welcome to Teirm and forgive my guards for being protective.
Clarissa next turned to the door that Moratensis was led through and smirked at his lack of caring. Young man it would be wise to show some respect to those whom you cannot best. I already know you are a mage hunter and therefore you won't be able to easily escape. Now may I introduce the panel that decides you fate today? I am Lady Clarissa, daughter of Galbatorix and lady of Teirm. The man you see standing there is my brother Rerukusu, lord of Uru'baen. And the tall woman here is a personal friend and soon to be a high ranking official, Ri'Shei. We have faced worse than your kind and survived to tell tale of it. So I give you one chance to present your case before we decide whether or not you live.

Reru resisted Vervada's mind for a moment before allowing it. He didn't often let anyone touch his mind but Vervada was Clarissa's and he trusted her completely. He hardly seemed to notice the others who had come in, he was lost in the memories Vervada had showed him. As he saw the memories he stiffened and let go of Clarissa as if she'd physically burned him. He looked hurt and angry at knowing she considered betraying him and Aelodil? He didn't know what to make of that.
"Clarissa...I never thought you'd do something like that to me," he said. She hadn't done anything yet but from the memories she might as well have, it seemed like she'd made up her mind at least at the the time she'd been with Aelodil. "Aside from Avendel I don't care about any one else as much as I do you. You know that and I'd do almost anything for you but...if you betray me..." he didn't finish right away. "I'll never forgive you for it." All his life he'd lived in fear of his father and hating how things where the one good thing in his life was Avendel and Clarissa. Avendel still hated him to some degree for killing Kami and bringing her back and now Clarissa...

Reru, you and I both know that there is little chance of either of us being able to win in a fight. I told Aelodil what I did because it would benefit the people of Teirm. The problem isn't that I am a child of Galbatorix, it is that of all his living heirs, I am the only one who can see both sides. I see you as my brother and therefore someone I trust but also as someone who has been known to act before thinking. That isn't a good trait to have in a neighboring Province. I even see Aelodil and Ragdar from both sides. Ragdar is vicious and bloodthirsty for the most part but he is also a great leader. He commands loyalty that few can rival. Aelodil is too focused on Kelocias attacking us and he is right to think that. But the problem rests with you. You frighten Aelodil and Ragdar enough to make them ask me to turn on my brother. So make one of them trust you and then this falls apart. But if you attack Aelodil then I'm sure you would meet with my anger. Now table this discussion until after we have dealt with Ri'Shei and the mage hunter.
Clarissa never outwardly showed she was having a discussion with Rerukusu. It was better not to show weakness in front of prisoners. Especially those you were thinking about executing. That moment of weakness could be used against you in the end and make the plan fall apart. With a simple flick of her finger, the door slammed shut and bolted to ensure Moratensis would be unable to escape if he chose wrong in this discussion.

Reru frowned her words hurt. He'd always relied on her before to help him decide the more mundane tactical details he knew she was good at, he hadn't seen a need to bother thinking before acting. He'd only really ever wanted one thing, for people to care about him. Galbatorix never had except when he was useful to him. He'd thought Clarissa cared about him and he wasn't so sure of that now. Secondly he loved power and power he thought would make people like him or he could force them to like him for that matter. "Fine but I'm not leaving until we talk more about this," he said. He wanted to defend himself against what she'd said but he didn't think she'd let him argue the point when those other two where here. He finally turned his attention to Ri'shei and the mage hunter but his thoughts were still on Clarissa. He leaned against the desk and watched. This was Clarissa's province not his so he'd just sit and watch for now.

With many different events folding out in front of him, Moratensis leaned back into a pillar. The shackles on his hands clanked with a metal sound. Gritting his teeth, a shimmer flashed by his eyes. Glaring at his shackles, a dark, black fire burst the metal in between to two. Feeling like a brute with the cuffs around his arms, but not prohibiting his actions he was about to turn to the Lady of Teirm and her visitors with a sarcastic comment when he noticed her attention turn to him. Before he could give her his usual treatment of disrespect, he was roughly punched by the guard behind him. Rubbing his ribs, he gave the guard an endless cold glare. Allowing his emotions to shape into magic, he noticed the guard's body temperature drop before he hobbled out of the room thanks to his magic.
Giving Clarissa a satisfied smirk he said, "Well, I'll take it as an honor that I'm deemed worthy to be placed in front of such a panel." giving a sarcastic bow. Though he was feeling cocky, he was also being careful. He knew the names she presented him with. If it were only one of them, he might have had a chance to get away. With all three of these people in a room together with him.. well, he didn't have much a choice but to hope she was feeling happy. His bottomless black eyes darted to the door as they were shut by her magic. Throwing the cowl off his head, revealing his relatively young face and unkempt, long, black hair. The most noticeable feature that was now easy to spot were his eyes. Bottomless like an endless pit. Crossing his arms across his chest as he leaned back into the pillar comfortably he said, "Here's my case. I needed the energy to sustain myself, they had the energy. Simple as that. I don't see any point trying to lie my way out of this one. What is Her Majesty's decree here?" his voice thick with sarcasm. Careful, he would be. Respectful? Nah.

Clarissa had seen the actions towards her guard as well as the show of force in breaking the manacles. None of his appearance escaped the woman's notice as she walked towards him slowly and place the tip of her sword against his chest. Suddenly thinking better of it, Clarissa aimed a slap at his face that would send his head spinning around on a swivel.
My name does not automatically make me royalty nor does my position. What makes me a higher authority than you is the fact that even when faced with danger I still hold a level head. Respect was not asked for before me but you will not treat my guards in such a manner.
Trusting that either Ri'Shei or Rerukusu would step in if he attacked her, Clarissa turned her back and walked a few feet away. Slowly she sheathed her sword and then pulled out three items. One was a vial of toxin that would kill even her late father, the second was a simple noose enchanted to tighten with every lie told, and the third was a gleaming spike and chain that had several enchantments meant to kill if she was assaulted. Moving with practiced ease, Clarissa dipped the spike in the toxin and placed it on the desk. Next she slipped the noose over the boy's head.
My title in the Empire wasn't princess for a princess would never have devoted her time to my particular skills. Instead I was the toxins master and skilled enough in torture to have been used by my father. Now there are two ways you can die here and both are excruciating. But there is a way for you to live. Start by telling me your name, then swear to abide by the laws of Teirm, and lastly you must freely answer any questions these two have. If you do this I may have a position for one as talented as you. If not then I'm sure your head on a pike will ward off further attempts to disrespect me.

Reru had grabbed an apple on Clarissa's desk that had been left there. He frowned at it for a moment wondering if it was poisoned she would do something like that. He sighed and just tossed the apple once in the air and used a spell to detect any poison. Obviously he could tell the vial Clarissa had was, but he already knew that. The apple on the other hand was fine. So he took a bite and watched her. "Ah thanks a lot," he muttered when she mentioned not being called princess. Unlike her he'd taken the title of Prince, it was for the sway and power it had as it was tool he had used.
He was acting extremely casual about this though inwardly he was pretty bothered about what Clarissa had said in his mind earlier. For the moment he decided he'd still protect her. At least for now, he wouldn't let this guy do anything to her. It was oddly familiar though. Needing energy, he had been like that once. Clarissa had never told him to stop though or seemed bothered by him doing it before. Had her falling in love changed her like that or was this something else? Maybe he really didn't know Clarissa as well as he had thought he did.

Feeling the ring in his head, Moratensis smirked. He had braced himself, expecting this at least. His head turned violently to the side by the strength of her slap. Spitting blood on the ground, he gazed at her with his endless eyes. Like usual, his smirk stayed there despite the little bit of blood dripping from the side of his mouth. Reaching to it with his finger, he wiped it off his cheek and licked it, savoring the energy in it.
His eyes trailed the back of Clarissa as she turned to the table. He couldn't see what exactly she was doing, but he could sure smell the poison. He was no expert on poison, most his immunity coming through repeated poisonings that weren't voluntary. Even then, it had never been something this thick or rich. Not bothering to try to stop her from placing the noose on his neck, knowing his best bet to live was to not agitate this crowd any further, he arched an eyebrow at what she said. "My name's Moratensis. No fancy surname, I'm afraid. Though I'm afraid I can't swear to abide by the law. After all, I live through the misery and death of others." he responded to her.
He wasn't by any matter trying to get himself killed. By the same token, if he swore to abide the law while lying.. he doubted the noose would like that. He had no idea that it was enchanted, but doubted she'd put it on him without any need of it. So that meant it probably was enchanted to detect lies. Probably nothing good for his health. Shifting his gaze around the room he said, "Well go ahead. Ask any question you want. I don't have anything to hide. Don't bother asking about my family, don't remember them. Don't ask me about my childhood, it was close to nonexistent. The rest is free to go."

Clarissa smirked right back at Moratensis as he blatantly refused to do as she said. That would more than likely be a bother in her particular choice of position for him. But at the same time, the noose never tightened which meant he couldn't swear to something he knew was a lie. With a nod she stepped back and looked at Reru.
I realize you did similar things to survive so ask whatever questions you want. I have nothing against his choice but more that he attacked my people and has killed a few already. Please brother, help me and then I will explain everything.

Reru looked a bit annoyed at being left in the dark. He liked being in control or at least knowing what was going on. Galbatorix rarely let him do either. But he nodded and tossed the apple core into a trash bin. he got up and took a few steps toward Moratenis seeming to gather his usual command rather than being open and well human with Clarissa a few minutes before anyone came in. "Why do you need magic?" he asked seriously. This was a question that hit close to him. Like Clarissa had said he'd done it to survive and to save Avendel. He no longer needed to do so any more now with a nearly endless supply of magic at his command from Ender.

Turning his sly smirk to Rerukusu Moratensis yawned casually before responding, "Why do you need air? It's the same concept." Much the same as how every living thing required multiple different needs to survive and sustain themselves, he needed thr magic energy to sustain himself. Without the energy he would most likely crumple after a month. However, with the energy he would shine almost like an Elf. Turning to Clarissa he told her, "I have no desire to die. So again I will tell you. I can't and won't abide by the laws. Laws that forbid murder are laws I can't abide by. No murder means no blood which means no energy which results in a useless husk of what I currently am. Anyway, next question, shoot away."

Reru frowned. "I've only known one who needed magic to live. Like an empty void it gets consumed only death of something sustains and I'm sure for you it isn't enough is it," he said. "What are you doing in Teirm just harvesting life? There are better sources than that, not that I'd share it with you." He'd gathered quite a bit of pure magic into an orb into his hand before abruptly making it vanish as if it was food to someone starving. "What is your aim in life," he asked. He wanted to know what Moratensis was up to if he had any reason to threaten him or Clarissa specifically.
